Book Advice to the Beginner in the Selection of Sheep for Breeding Classic Reprint

Download or read book Advice to the Beginner in the Selection of Sheep for Breeding Classic Reprint written by A. A. Macmillan and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2019-02 with total page 20 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Advice to the Beginner in the Selection of Sheep for Breeding Associate Chief, Field Services, Live Stock Branch. 21079 - ladapted to the conditions under which they will be subjected in the district where the beginner's farm or ranch is located, and meet local market require ments. The selection of breed also depends largely upon the individual taste of the shepherd and the object he has in view in raising them. In Canada, success can be attained with any of the popular breeds produced here, but no person should ever commence raising a breed for which he knows he cannot obtain a ready sale. Perhaps his means and conditions do not warrant him to enter into the production of pure-breds. If he is breeding sheep merely for mutton pur poses, high-class grades will suffice, yet even in buying grades he should take care to select only those possessing a good mutton conformation. Many farmers think that, since they own simply grades, any old sheep at all will produce good enough results in the flock, and, therefore, the more cheaply they can buy the better. This is false economy, for very frequently they obtain in their flock animals that do not pay for the expense of their keep. The breeding of sheep is now a well-established practice on many farms and in the fall of the year it is always possible to purchase well-bred ewe lambs of any of the popular breeds. Book Breeding Stud Sheep

Download or read book Breeding Stud Sheep written by Murray Long and published by Landlinks Press. This book was released on 2008-06-25 with total page 145 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Breeding Stud Sheep shows how to establish and manage a successful sheep stud. All aspects of stud breeding are covered, including where and how to buy your sheep, selecting the right breeding stock for your stud, flock management, nutrition, disease control, lambing problems, showing sheep, promotion and marketing, and selling stud genetics. The detailed step-by-step strategies will give the reader the ability to develop alternative approaches that best suit their situation. It also explains how new initiatives such as performance recording, DNA testing and modern reproductive techniques can be integrated with the old, time-honoured traditions of sheep breeding. Profiles of highly recognised stud breeders are included, detailing how they started and the strategies they have used to grow their stud sheep operations over many years. This book will help new breeders avoid the pitfalls and mistakes that can occur when starting a new stud venture, and show how to succeed in what is ultimately a tough but very rewarding industry.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Sheep: Domestic Breeds and Their Treatment Early in the present century, when interest in the breeding of live stock became more general than it had previously been, the demand for information on the subject was supplied by Messrs. David Low, Wm. Youatt, W. C. L. Martin, and others. The works of Low and Youatt were large and expensive; those of Martin were cheap and popular. Martin's little books passed through many editions, and, from time to time, were revised and modernised. They form the foundation of the present "Popular Live Stock Series"; but in 1893 they were so thoroughly overhauled that very little of the writing of the original author remains. Consequently his name has not been retained on the title page of "Cattle" and "Sheep," as the books have been rendered practically new. They are now published in the belief that, in view of the increased importance of live stock in the farm economy of the United Kingdom, they will be helpful in instructing beginners as to the characteristics and capabilities of the various improved breeds and in giving plain hints as to management and diseases; while they will also serve as introductions to the more extended studies of the subject that are to be found in the "Live Stock Hand Books," brought out by the same publishers. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Modern Sheep: Breeds and Management The author takes great pleasure in acknowledging the assist ance rendered him by those gentlemen whose names are mentioned from time to time in the pages of this work, without which it never could have appeared in anything like the complete state in which it is presented. In selecting the illustrations for this work' it has been the aim of the writer to use only first class photographs, as drawings of animals are always more or less misleading and consequently disappointing. Book The Sheep Book For Smallholders

Download or read book The Sheep Book For Smallholders written by Tim Tyne and published by MBI Publishing Company. This book was released on 2010-03-15 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This promises to be the only book on sheep you will ever need! Packed full of detailed information, The Sheep Book for Smallholders covers every aspect of keeping sheep on a small scale. Beginning with a brief overview of the sheep industry, and the rise and fall of the artisan shepherd, the author has logically divided the book up into the shepherd's calendar, so that the sheep keeper knows what to expect with each season. All aspects of looking after the flock are covered, including selection, culling, nutrition, housing, lambing, grassland management, ailments and prevention. There are also sections on home slaughter and butcher, and, uniquely, processing the byproducts, including the fleece and keeping sheep for dairying. Unusually, the book also has a section on training sheepdogs. Supported by stunning photography and clear illustrations, as well as huge and useful appendices. This is a welcome addition to the smallholder's bookshelf, and is going to be a reference classic in years to come.
