Book excerpt: Her life has been wonderfully fictionalized on the hit PBS TV series, "Mercy Street." Here is Mary Phinney's real life in her own words, long prized by historians as a source about Civil War medicine.American Mary Phinney was ahead of her time. A rebel against the restrictions placed on women of her day, the sad death of her husband, the Barron von Olnhausen, proved to be the real beginning of her life.Upon the outbreak of the American Civil War, this remarkable woman enlisted herself in the care of sick and wounded soldiers. Working with Dorothea Dix and other notable women of the Civil War, she tirelessly worked to improve the sanitary conditions, medical care, and morale of shattered young men.Hardly taking a breath from her exhausting years in the Civil War, she went to Europe in 1870 to provide the same services in the Franco-Prussian War. Her experiences as related through her own writing is the story of one of the great women of the 19th century.Mary Phinney von Olnhausen early found her happiness in living, in suffering, in encountering hardships for the sake of others. She was too human to be a saint, of too intense a vitality to be thoroughly well balanced; but she was what the world most needs,--an unflagging, unselfish, optimistic moral force.

Book A Civil Life in an Uncivil Time

Download or read book A Civil Life in an Uncivil Time written by Paula Whitacre and published by U of Nebraska Press. This book was released on 2017-09-01 with total page 318 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the fall of 1862 Julia Wilbur left her family's farm near Rochester, New York, and boarded a train to Washington DC. As an ardent abolitionist, the forty-seven-year-old Wilbur left a sad but stable life, headed toward the chaos of the Civil War, and spent most of the next several years in Alexandria devising ways to aid recently escaped slaves and hospitalized Union soldiers. A Civil Life in an Uncivil Time shapes Wilbur's diaries and other primary sources into a historical narrative sending the reader back 150 years to understand a woman who was alternately brave, self-pitying, foresighted, petty--and all too human. Paula Tarnapol Whitacre describes Wilbur's experiences against the backdrop of Alexandria, Virginia, a southern town held by the Union from 1861 to 1865; of Washington DC, where Wilbur became active in the women's suffrage movement and lived until her death in 1895; and of Rochester, New York, a hotbed of social reform and home to Wilbur's acquaintances Frederick Douglass and Susan B. Anthony. In this second chapter of her life, Wilbur persisted in two things: improving conditions for African Americans who had escaped from slavery and creating a meaningful life for herself. A Civil Life in an Uncivil Time is the captivating story of a woman who remade herself at midlife during a period of massive social upheaval and change.

Download or read book At War with King Alcohol written by Megan L. Bever and published by UNC Press Books. This book was released on 2022-08-24 with total page 261 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Liquor was essential to military culture as well as healthcare regimens in both the Union and Confederate armies. But its widespread use and misuse caused severe disruptions as unruly drunken soldiers and officers stumbled down roads and through towns, colliding with civilians. The problems surrounding liquor prompted debates among military officials, soldiers, and civilians as to what constituted acceptable drinking. While Americans never could agree on precisely when it was appropriate to make or drink alcohol, one consensus emerged: the wasteful manufacture and reckless consumption of spirits during a time of civil war was so unpatriotic that it sometimes bordered on disloyalty. Using an array of sources—temperance periodicals, soldiers' accounts, legislative proceedings, and military records—Megan L. Bever explores the relationship between war, the practical realities of drinking alcohol, and temperance sentiment within the United States. Her insightful conclusions promise to shed new light on our understanding of soldiers' and veterans' lives, civil-military relations, and the complicated relationship between drinking, morality, and masculinity.
