Fairbanks, including the development of his professional career as a sculptor. Fairbanks was at that cusp of civilizations and artistic philosophies that saw modernism competing with realism, war overriding peace. He worked continually to promote realistic sculpture and peace. Fairbanks was born into a family of 17th century immigrants to the Massachusetts Bay Colony. His maternal grandfather invented a pin machine, which made child labor obsolete in that industry (much to the chagrin of some). His father and eldest brother were fine artists and teachers. At 13, Avard was awarded a scholarship in New York City for studies at the Art Students League. He was doing copy work at the Metropolitan Museum and developing animal sculptures at the Bronx Zoo. His father then took him to Paris to study at L'Ecole des Beaux Arts with masters of fine sculpture. At the start of WWI they were able to escape on the last train out of Paris. Fairbanks finished his high school studies back in Utah. At 16, he was an artist employed on the University of Utah archaeological expedition into southern Utah to the Natural Bridges area, to establish information about the ancient cliff dwelling tribes' culture and habitat. At 19, he and his eldest brother created the sculptures for the LDS Hawaiian Temple. After WWI he began his career in earnest by promoting and modeling the Idaho Doughboy monument. He continued his studies and teaching career in Oregon, and then studied in Italy on a Guggenheim Fellowship. In 1929 he was appointed to the faculty of the University of Michigan in the newly established Institute of Fine Art. He was instrumental in showing how sculptural methods could refine automobile body design. His early career as a sculptor and educator is described herein, with an Afterword detailing his many later accomplishments. This book joins the collection of eight books based on his artistic work, authored by his son Eugene F. Fairbanks.

Book excerpt: Winner of the Randolph Caldecott Medal and the Coretta Scott King Illustrator Award Jean-Michel Basquiat and his unique, collage-style paintings rocketed to fame in the 1980s as a cultural phenomenon unlike anything the art world had ever seen. But before that, he was a little boy who saw art everywhere: in poetry books and museums, in games and in the words that we speak, and in the pulsing energy of New York City. Now, award-winning illustrator Javaka Steptoe's vivid text and bold artwork echoing Basquiat's own introduce young readers to the powerful message that art doesn't always have to be neat or clean--and definitely not inside the lines--to be beautiful.

Book A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man

Download or read book A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man written by James Joyce and published by Union Square & Co.. This book was released on 2024-08-13 with total page 170 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: James Joyce’s deeply personal and “most memorable novel” (H. G. Wells) detailing the spiritual and artistic awakening of Stephen Dedalus, now freshly repackaged for the Union Square & Co. Signature Classics line. James Joyce’s semi-autobiographical first novel explores the author’s own love-hate relationship with Ireland through Stephen Dedalus, Joyce’s literary alter ego. Dedalus yearns to be an artist, but must first overcome the aspects of Irish society, like school and the church, that he feels restrains his creativity and stifles his soul. Joyce’s use of experimental literary techniques, including stream of consciousness, is on full display in his first novel, which he further develops in his later works, Ulysses and Finnegan’s Wake.

Book The Young Artist as Scientist

Download or read book The Young Artist as Scientist written by Mary Jo Pollman and published by Teachers College Press. This book was released on 2017 with total page 185 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first in-depth look at the important connections between the arts and science specifically for early childhood education (pre-K–3rd grade). Highlighting their many commonalities, such as the processes involved in creative problem solving, the author draws on what we can learn from Leonardo da Vinci as the supreme artist-scientist. Every chapter begins with a vignette of Leonardo and relates his thinking to the development of children’s ideas in the arts and STEM (STEAM). This fresh look at the interdisciplinary connections of the arts and science offers early childhood teachers and administrators a spectrum of tools for connecting the creative arts (art, movement, drama, and music) to the STEM movement, 21st-century skills, and developmentally appropriate practice. “A coherent, well-researched argument for replacing meaningless activities with engaging creative art and STEM experiences.” —From the Foreword by Judy Harris Helm, president, Best Practices, Inc. “Mary Jo understands the many connections between science and art, and her materials and resources foster creativity and science learning with ready-to-use activities.” —Carrie Lynne Draper, founder & executive director, Readiness Learning Associates “Woven throughout the book are historical perspectives, current research, critical concepts, and activity ideas that provide a rich rationale and immediate applicability to the classroom.” —Julie Bullard, University of Montana

Download or read book Young Leonardo written by Jean-Pierre Isbouts and published by Thomas Dunne Books. This book was released on 2017-05-23 with total page 238 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Jean-Pierre Isbouts and Christopher Heath Brown depict Leonardo's seminal years in Milan from an entirely new perspective: that of the Sforza court. They show that much of the Sforza patronage was directed on vast projects, such as the Milan Cathedral, favoring a close circle of local artists to which Leonardo never gained entry. As a result, his exceptional talent remained largely unrecognized right up to The Last Supper and the fresco of the Crucifixion on the opposite wall, a work that up to now has fully escaped public attention. Finally, they present a sensational theory: that two long-ignored, life-size copies of The Last Supper, now in Belgium and the UK, were actually commissioned by the French king Louis XII and painted under Leonardo's direct supervision."--Publisher's description.
