This book was released on 2021-11-01 with total page 322 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When Leopold Pospíšil first arrived in New Guinea in 1954 to investigate the legal systems of the local tribes, he was warned about the Kapauku who reputedly had no laws. Dubious that any society could exist without laws, Pospíšil immediately decided to live among and study the Kapauku. Learning the language and living as a participant-observer among the Kapauku, Pospíšil discovers that the supposedly primitive society possesses laws, rules, and social structures that are as sophisticated as they are logical. Having survived the Nazi occupation of Czechoslovakia and fled the Communist regime, Pospíšil has little patience for the notion that so-called advanced civilizations are superior to the ‘stone age’ society in which he now lives. On the basis of his research and experiences among the Kapauku – he would stay with them five times between 1954 and 1979 – Pospíšil pioneered in the field of legal anthropology, holding a professorship at Yale, serving as the anthropology curator of the Peabody Museum of Natural History, and publishing three books of scholarship on the Kapauku law. As Jaroslav Jiřík and Martin Soukup write in their afterword, however, “His three previously published works are about the Kapauku; this one is about the anthropologist among the Kapauku.” The memoir is filled with charming anecdotes and thrilling stories of trials, travels, and war – told with humor and humility—and accompanied by a wealth of the author’s personal photos from the time.

Book excerpt: This book is a result of an effort made by us towards making a contribution to the preservation and repair of original classic literature. In an attempt to preserve, improve and recreate the original content, we have worked towards: 1. Type-setting & Reformatting: The complete work has been re-designed via professional layout, formatting and type-setting tools to re-create the same edition with rich typography, graphics, high quality images, and table elements, giving our readers the feel of holding a 'fresh and newly' reprinted and/or revised edition, as opposed to other scanned & printed (Optical Character Recognition - OCR) reproductions. 2. Correction of imperfections: As the work was re-created from the scratch, therefore, it was vetted to rectify certain conventional norms with regard to typographical mistakes, hyphenations, punctuations, blurred images, missing content/pages, and/or other related subject matters, upon our consideration. Every attempt was made to rectify the imperfections related to omitted constructs in the original edition via other references. However, a few of such imperfections which could not be rectified due to intentional\unintentional omission of content in the original edition, were inherited and preserved from the original work to maintain the authenticity and construct, relevant to the work. We believe that this work holds historical, cultural and/or intellectual importance in the literary works community, therefore despite the oddities, we accounted the work for print as a part of our continuing effort towards preservation of literary work and our contribution towards the development of the society as a whole, driven by our beliefs. We are grateful to our readers for putting their faith in us and accepting our imperfections with regard to preservation of the historical content. HAPPY READING!

"PROVISIONS SHORT, AND ONLY NOT A WRECK." Dutch Charts--Nimatota--The Chinese Storekeepers of Dobo--The Post Holder's Wife and the Policeman--Off Ki Island in a Hurricane--At Bauwar--Breakers under the Bow--My little Papuan Boy--" Water, water, everywhere, but not a drop to drink!"--A straight Run for Australia--Mr. Macfarlane's Teaching bears Fruit--A safe Return--Besults of the Expedition--Mahometans versus Kafirs--Responsibility of the Government of the Netherlands--The Importance of New Guinea to England and Australia. On the following morning, continuing to the eastward, we passed two deep bays, but as we could see no sign of inhabitants did not enter, and by noon made the island of Nimatota, which is marked on the Dutch charts as a long narrow island. The charts we soon discovered to be again in error, as instead of one long island, Nimatota consists of a group of islands with narrow channels between them. From the seaward, however, they could easily be mistaken for one island. As we reached the eastern end of the group we sighted a native house with a flagstaff, where they hoist the flag of the Netherlands. One small prow pushed off from the shore, while another came from between the islands, and conducted us to a very insecure anchorage, where, however, we remained all night. In the morning the prows came off from the shore and brought some nutmegs, but advised us to sail the group, where we should have better anchorage. This was done, and we anchored close to the shore in fifteen fathoms. The tide runs between the numerous islands with great velocity, and makes the passage exceedingly dangerous, as it is only on the top of patches of reef that anchorage is to be found. As soon as we anchored, the people requested us...

Book Work and Adventure in New Guinea Classic Reprint

Download or read book Work and Adventure in New Guinea Classic Reprint written by James Chalmers and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-08-26 with total page 350 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Work and Adventure in New Guinea This book was originally issued in 188 5, and attracted the attention of many readers to the noble Christian work being done in New Guinea. It has been out of print for some years, and is now reissued in connection with the publication of James Chalmers' Life. New Guinea, if we may take Australia as a continent, is the largest island in the world, being, roughly speaking, about 1400 miles long, and 490 broad at its widest point. Its northernmost coast nearly touches the equator, and its southernmost stretches down to 11 south latitude. Little more than the fringe or coast-line of the island has been at all carefully explored, but it is known to possess magnificent mountain ranges, vast stretches of beautiful scenery, much land that is fruitful, even under native cultivation, and mighty rivers that take their rise far inland. Its savage inhabitants have aroused powerfully the interest and sympathy alike of Christian Polynesians and English missionaries, Who, taking their lives in their hands, have, in not a few instances, laid them down in the effort to Win New Guinea for Christ.
