Book Seventh day Adventist Health Reform A Crucible of Identity Tensions

Download or read book Seventh day Adventist Health Reform A Crucible of Identity Tensions written by Richard B. Ferret and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2023-07-20 with total page 139 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Seventh-day Adventist church, formally organized in America in 1863, is today one of the fastest-growing Protestant movements in the world and defines itself as a prophetic remnant, raised up and commissioned by God to teach and preach a final message of warning to the world before the imminent return of Christ. From its beginnings, however, a sense of failure was built into the success of the fledgling movement. In order to preserve the message (the imminent return of Christ), Adventists had to erect institutions based on continuity and permanence. A dilemma emerged: medical institutions built to be conducive for separation from the world faced a this-worldly reality filled with requirements from various state entities: registration, approval, and so forth. Thus, Adventist medical institutions confronted constant challenges to their denominational and theological uniqueness. The emergence of this dilemma between aspirations of separateness and this-worldly reality was especially evident in the battle for Adventism's sectarian identity, ethos, and future at the turn of the twentieth century--between Ellen G. White (a cofounder of the movement) and Dr. John H. Kellogg (an Adventist administrator and surgeon who sought to desectarianize the movement).

Book excerpt: Healthful Living was originally published by the Medical Missionary Board, Battle Creek, Michigan, under the title Instruction Relating to the Principles of Healthful Living. So popular when it first came out that it became necessary to come out with a second and then a third edition the first year.We have reproduced this 1898 third edition which also contained two additional chapters, God in Nature and The Spirit Filled Life.In the third edition an appendix of parallel Scripture references was included. This Scripture referenced appendix will be found exceedingly helpful in making clear to the mind of the reader the fact that the principles presented in this work are not mere human inventions; but are a part of the divine order appointed for the human family at the beginning, and which is to be restored when all things are made new.Wherever it has been received, this book has been recognized as a veritable storehouse of seed thoughts relating to the great practical themes with which it deals.

Download or read book Mental Health written by American Psychiatric Association Foundation and published by American Psychiatric Publishing. This book was released on 2016-04-26 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The American Psychiatric Association Foundation has produced two new resources to help faith leaders better understand mental illness and treatment, and better help individuals and families in their congregations facing mental health challenges, Mental Health: A Guide for Faith Leaders and a companion two-page Quick Reference on Mental Health for Faith Leaders. These resources are the culmination of work from the Mental Health and Faith Community Partnership, a collaboration of psychiatrists and faith leaders representing diverse faith traditions. Many people facing a mental health challenge, personally or with a family member, turn first to a faith leader. And for many receiving psychiatric care, religion and spirituality are an important part of healing. In their role as "first responders," faith leaders can help dispel misunderstandings, reduce stigma associated with mental illness and treatment, and help access to treatment for those in need. The Guide and Quick Reference provide faith leaders with the knowledge, tools and resources to support that role. The Guide includes a general overview of mental health and mental illness and information on how faith leaders can support people with mental health challenges. For example, it discusses how to create a more inclusive and welcoming community, when and how to make a referral to professional mental health services, and ways to deal with resistance to accepting mental health treatment. The one page Quick Reference Guide is included.

It chronicles the vision, sacrifice, dedication and overriding hand of divine providence in their histories. As a ministry, Adventist health care must always recognize its place in God's plan to care for those who are sick and hurting. In this context it continues to be a story of miracles--more than a thousand every day.

Book The Ministry of Healing

Download or read book The Ministry of Healing written by Ellen G. White and published by . This book was released on 2015-09-25 with total page 352 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: According to Wikipedia's list of the best selling books of all time, Ellen G. White's book, Steps to Christ has sold 62 million copies and her 5000 articles and 40 published books have been translated into more than 140 languages. In 1905 White's book, The Ministry of Healing was first published. In the preface she wrote; It is not the creator's purpose that mankind shall be weighed down with a burden of pain, that his activities shall be curtailed by illness, that his strength wane, and his life be cut short by disease. But all too frequently the laws established by God to govern the life are flagrantly transgressed; sin enters the heart, and man loses sight of his dependence upon God, the source of life and health. Then follow the penalties of transgression--pain, sickness, and death. This book emphasizes the link between diet and spiritual growth. It's a diet book, a self-help book, and a Christian spiritual guide all rolled into one, and it continues to be read widely to this day.

Download or read book Home Based Care Ministry written by Judy Mathers and published by TEACH Services, Inc.. This book was released on 2019-08-06 with total page 210 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We live in a broken world with broken people. Often it is easy to ignore the needs of the people around us. But what would God want us to do? In His ministry here on earth, Jesus reached out to the most hurt, most abused, and most reviled members of His community. He healed not only their bodies but their spirits. Should we do any less? The Seventh-day Adventist Church has a unique opportunity to serve the hurting in their community through a Home-Based Care ministry. With our mission to love, serve, and teach, and with the numerous church resources already available, we can do what many others cannot—be the safe haven of health and healing that God intends His church to be. While this book focuses on ministry to individuals and their families dealing with HIV and AIDS, the principles found here can be applied to anyone with a terminal illness who finds himself/herself on the other side of accepted society. It shows us that instead of being critical, we should accept where people and their choices have led them, doing our best to minister with the love and care of Jesus.
