Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Schism is the first ethnographic and historical study of Seventh-day Adventism in China. Scholars have been slow to consider Chinese Protestantism from a denominational standpoint. In Schism, the first monograph that documents the life of the Chinese Adventist denomination from the mid-1970s to the 2010s, Christie Chui-Shan Chow explores how Chinese Seventh-day Adventists have used schism as a tool to retain, revive, and recast their unique ecclesial identity in a religious habitat that resists diversity. Based on unpublished archival materials, fieldwork, oral history, and social media research, Chow demonstrates how Chinese Adventists adhere to their denominational character both by recasting the theologies and faith practices that they inherited from American missionaries in the early twentieth century and by engaging with local politics and culture. This book locates the Adventist movement in broader Chinese sociopolitical and religious contexts and explores the multiple agents at work in the movement, including intrachurch divisions among Adventist believers, growing encounters between local and overseas Adventists, and the denomination’s ongoing interactions with local Chinese authorities and other Protestants. The Adventist schisms show that global Adventist theology and practices continue to inform their engagement with sociopolitical transformations and changes in China today. Schism will compel scholars to reassess the existing interpretations of the history of Protestant Christianity in China during the Maoist years and the more recent developments during the Reform era. It will interest scholars and students of Chinese history and religion, global Christianity, American religion, and Seventh-day Adventism.

Book Beyond Ellen White

Download or read book Beyond Ellen White written by Michael Leigh Chamberlain and published by . This book was released on 2008 with total page 387 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Beyond Ellen White: SDAism in transition is a comprehensive and scholarly sociohistorical and sociocultural analysis of changes in SDA culture and practice based on a doctoral thesis by Michael Chamberlain. Its focus is the relationship between the teaching and writings of Ellen White, the SDA prophet and the founding and development of the senior Australian SDA college, Avondale College from the late 19th century to the present day. Particular attention is devoted to the social, cultural and curricular changes and controversies across that time, and the apparent concomitant increasing secularisation of the institution. At the same time, the broader canvas of a similar process of change in first-world SDAism is also developed. It is the most extensive study of its kind on this topic and constitutes a significant and controversial addition to the scholarly literature on the rise and development of Seventh-day Adventism."--Provided by publisher.

Book Adventism Re examined 75 Years of Changes Challenges and Choices

Download or read book Adventism Re examined 75 Years of Changes Challenges and Choices written by Gordon Kainer and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2019-11-13 with total page 424 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: My book's objective is to describe the beliefs, practices, and ventures of the Adventist church that have had or still have a significant impact on my life. Looking back, I now have a better understanding why ancient Israel was repeatedly told to remember what God had done for them. For this reason, there will be much reminiscing, retelling of personal experiences, and evaluating church teachings and decisions, all in the endeavor to make sense of what has happened. That can only take place if we bathe our words and expressions in grace, love and understanding. The book endeavors to answer the underlying question: what do we mean when we use the term "church"? What are the primary reasons for its existence? When you ask Adventists such a question, we hope they answer with a reply that is inspiring and practical. In presenting my view of Adventism over the past seventy-five years, it's had a positive effect on my knowing and understanding Jesus-and I hope the same goes for you!

Book Towards an Adventist Version of Communio Ecclesiology

Download or read book Towards an Adventist Version of Communio Ecclesiology written by Tihomir Lazić and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2019-11-13 with total page 314 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores how Seventh-day Adventists, like other Christians, can benefit from generating their own version of communio ecclesiology. It starts by offering a critical analysis of the status quo of the existing Adventist portrayal of church as remnant, and suggests potential ways of moving this tradition forward. To articulate a more rounded and comprehensive vision of the church’s rich and multifaceted relational nature, this book draws on the mainstream Christian koinonia-based framework. Consequently, it provides possible solutions to some of the most divisive ecclesial issues that Christian communities face today regarding church structure, ministry, mission, communal interpretation, and reform. As it sets on a new footing the conversation between Adventism and other mainstream Christian traditions, the methodology of this book serves as a pathway for any Christian community to use when revisiting and enhancing its own current theologies of the church.

Book Ellen G White Co founder of the Seventh day Adventist Church

Download or read book Ellen G White Co founder of the Seventh day Adventist Church written by Roy E. Graham and published by Peter Lang Incorporated, International Academic Publishers. This book was released on 1985 with total page 526 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Seventh-day Adventism is inextricably linked with the life and ministry of Ellen G. White. This study examines her role in the church both in her lifetime and, since her death in 1915, through her voluminous writings. The passage of time and the general ecumenical climate of today make possible a more dispassionate study of White's work and insights, which hold value for the whole Christian Church, especially in the eschatological emphasis which lies at the center of her work.

Download or read book The Future of Adventism written by Gary Chartier and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-15 with total page 362 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Future of Adventism offers a stimulating introduction to the cutting edge of Seventh-day Adventist thought. Authored by leading scholars from multiple strands of the Adventist community, the essays that make up this collection are rooted in an understanding of Adventist history and the Christian heritage while simultaneously attuned to vital contemporary issues. Non-dogmatic and reflective, they are designed to prompt ongoing conversation about possible directions Adventist faith and life might take in the new millennium. "On the basis of this volume, the future of Seventh-day Adventist theology-rather than mere doctrine-looks bright indeed. As these theological thinkers make clear, Seventh-day Adventism has much to contribute to wider conversations on topics like eschatology, anthropology, the doctrine of God, and hope. This volume will serve as an essential touchstone for new generations of Seventh-day Adventist theological thinkers." -Linn Tonstad, Yale University "Based on an insightful re-reading of Adventist history and a careful description of current spiritual and existential trends, this collection delineates reasonable and meaningful potential horizons for Adventism. While remaining loyal to our church, these heterogeneous and complementary essays encourage an honest dialogue with the rest of God's world and welcome-with fidelity and clarity, realism and creativity-some pressing questions posed by that world as sources of opportunity for tomorrow." -Hanz Gutierrez, Adventist Theological School, Florence, Italy "On the 150th anniversary of their forbears' Great Disappointment in October 1844, a group of male Seventh-day Adventist scholars gathered at La Sierra University to present and discuss essays that predicted and prescribed the future of Adventist faith and practice in the context of its history. Twenty years later this volume makes those essays available to a wider public. Although a generation of change has significantly altered both Adventism and the world in which its believers live, the historical and theological trajectories mapped in this volume offer unique and revealing insights into the movement's shifting identities. Both insiders and outsiders seeking to understand contemporary Adventism will find much to ponder in this fine volume-both what it does and what it does not include." -Rennie B. Schoepflin, California State University, Los Angeles "This volume offers carefully-crafted lectures delivered by some of Adventism's best minds, presenting fascinating evidence that the tradition of affectionate self-critical examination continues in the Church. It supplies some important pieces in the puzzle of Adventist self-understanding, and so aids the community's maturing process. It poses the question which is crucial to the prospering of the Church in the future: Is the Adventist imagination alive and well?" -Michael Pearson, Newbold College "This book is exceptional. It will undoubtedly contribute to the future of Adventism as it is received with concern and assessed with sympathy. It examines crucial traditional and present positions with great care. That does not mean all problems are solved. The achievement is that they are here recognized and competently discussed. We have waited for this a very long time. It provides the needed opportunity for honest discussion, inviting participation in the renewal of Adventist theology." -Edward W. H. Vick, author of From Inspiration to Understanding and Philosophy for Believers

Book excerpt: From its humble beginnings in the nineteenth century, Seventh-day Adventism has remarkably grown to become one of America's largest, home-grown faiths, numbering nearly nineteen million members worldwide. Yet Adventism harbors dark secrets within its history. This is the true story of how one Adventist pastor, and university and seminary professor discovered these dark secrets and learned through painful, personal experience that neither the denomination nor its doctrine could be trusted. As his odyssey takes him from pastoral assignments in rural and urban congregations and finally into teaching religion at an Adventist university, he suddenly finds himself caught up in the maelstrom of a church's greatest theological crisis. For him, the denomination's theology and practice agonizingly unravel, forcing him to choose between loyalty to his church, his vocation, and his personal integrity. Rich in anecdotes and personal experiences, Out of Adventism guides readers interested in religious history, cults, and sects through the ins and outs of a religious community in crisis. Along the way, the reader not only gets an insider's view of Adventism, but also discovers a careful critique of the peculiar teachings of Seventh-day Adventism.

Book Secular Adventism

Download or read book Secular Adventism written by Fernando Luis Canale and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page 139 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Any casual observer of the history and culture of Seventh-day Adventism knows that Adventist lifestyle is undergoing a profound transformation. The differences between the church and the world appear to blur. Why are Adventists renouncing their characteristic lifestyle and adopting that of popular culture? In this book, Fernando Canale addresses this perturbing question inviting us to analyze the causes behind the theological and practical separation that exist between salvation and the believer's everyday lifestyle. He also clearly explains the biblical foundations that lead to the conclusion that lifestyle forms part of the experience of salvation. Finally, he suggests methods that might assist pastors, leaders and lay Adventists to become involved in a ministry where salvation and Christian lifestyle are the result of an indivisible experience. --back cover.

Book Continuity and Change in Adventist Teaching

Download or read book Continuity and Change in Adventist Teaching written by Rolf J. Pöhler and published by Peter Lang Gmbh, Internationaler Verlag Der Wissenschaften. This book was released on 2000 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides the first in-depth treatment of the problem of doctrinal development from a Seventh-day Adventist perspective. The author investigates the extent, nature, and direction of Adventist doctrinal developments in the light of the religious background of the church and the sociological forces at work in it. He also analyzes the response of the church to doctrinal adjustments and discusses Ellen White's involvement in and conception of doctrinal change. The study concludes that Adventist teachings have been significantly affected by theological and hermeneutical developments under the impact of sociological forces that tended to move the church closer towards evangelical Protestantism. Ellen White, co-founder of the church, was personally involved in theological change; her concept of doctrinal development reflects a remarkable depth of insight and represents a well-balanced approach to the subject.
