Book excerpt: Software systems that adapt their services to characteristics of individual users have already proven to be more effective and/or usable than non-adaptive systems. User-adaptive systems rely on user modeling systems for exhibiting personalized behavior. Quite a few user modeling systems have been developed during the past fifteen years. The decisions as to what useful services/functionalities of these systems are were mostly based on intuition and/or experience gained from studying the literature of a few user-adaptive applications. Results from neighboring disciplines and commercial developments have been largely ignored. Empirical evaluations of the practical applicability of user modeling systems were hardly ever carried out. This book is different: the author takes an interdisciplinary and application-oriented approach, defines meaningful requirements on user modeling servers, gives an overview of existing systems, pinpoints their deficiencies, develops a very novel architecture for user modeling servers, implements it, and tests its utility both within an application project and in empirically founded performance experiments. His excellent synthesis of scientific and industrial concerns (which rests on research in data bases, distributed systems, human-computer interaction, user modeling, statistics, and e-commerce) and his very convincing solutions make this book a worthwhile reading both for researchers and for industrial practitioners.

UMAP 2018 is a very special conference, as this is the very first time UMAP will be located in Asia! We hope to meet many like-minded researchers from Singapore and other Asian countries. Each submission received at least 3 reviews. After the initial reviews were submitted, the designated track chairs (TCs) facilitated discussion amongst reviewers in order to resolve differences and correct misunderstandings. The TCs then provided a recommendation to the Program Chairs. The final decisions were based on these recommendations, meta-reviews, and reviewer scores. Moreover, 10 papers were accepted as extended abstracts, and 13 were included in Late Breaking Results track (LBR). We thank Hui Fang and Pasquale Lops, LBR and Demo Chairs, for their efforts on selecting addition papers submitted to this track. As a result, there are 3 Demos, 3 Theory, Opinion and Reflection papers, and 20 Late Breaking Results papers presented in the iv UMAP poster sessions, which collectively showcase the wide spectrum of novel ideas and latest results in user modeling, adaptation and personalization. The authors present a novel approach that uses adaptive hypermedia in e-learning models to personalize educational content and learning resources based on the needs and preferences of individual learners. According to reports, in 2018 the vast majority of internet users worldwide are active on social networks, and the global average social network penetration rate as of 2018 is close to half the population. Employing social networking technologies in the field of education allows the latest technological advances to be used to create interactive educational environments where students can learn, collaborate with peers and communicate with tutors while benefiting from a social and pedagogical structure similar to a real class. The book first discusses in detail the current trend of social networking-based learning. It then provides a novel framework that moves further away from digital learning technologies while incorporating a wide range of recent advances to provide solutions to future challenges. This approach incorporates machine learning to the student-modeling component, which also uses conceptual frameworks and pedagogical theories in order to further promote individualization and adaptivity in e-learning environments. Moreover, it examines error diagnosis, misconceptions, tailored testing and collaboration between students are examined and proposes new approaches for these modules. Sentiment analysis is also incorporated into the general framework, supporting personalized learning by considering the user’s emotional state, and creating a user-friendly learning environment tailored to students’ needs. Support for students, in the form of motivation, completes the framework. To celebrate this anniversary, new topics enriched our main track: "virtual assistants and human-robot interaction" and "research methods and reproducibility." New this year was the fact that the personalized recommender systems track was cross-listed with the ACM Hypertext conference, and the track chairs did an excellent job of coordinating the review processes across the two conferences. Moreover, to mark the 30th anniversary of the UMAP conference, we organized the Theory, Opinion and Reflection track to reflect on qualitative and quantitative analyses while welcoming blue-sky and innovative ideas, with two accepted papers being presented in the conference. ACM UMAP covers a wide variety of research areas where personalization and adaptation may be applied. This includes a number of domains in which researchers are engendering significant innovations based on advances in the areas of user modeling and adaptation, recommender systems, adaptive educational systems, intelligent user interfaces, e-commerce, advertising, digital humanities, social networks, personalized health, entertainment, and many more.

It has become evident that flexible user-oriented dialog behavior of such systems can be achieved only if the system has access to a model of the user containing assumptions about his/her background knowledge as well as his/her goals and plans in consulting the system. Research in the field of user models investigates how such assumptions can be automatically created, represented and exploited by the system in the course of an "on-line" interaction with the user. The communication medium in this interaction need not necessarily be a natural language, such as English or German. Formal interaction languages are also permit ted. The emphasis is placed on systems with natural language input and output, however. A dozen major and several more minor user modeling systems have been de signed and implemented in the last decade, mostly in the context of natural-language dialog systems. The goal of UM86, the first international workshop on user model ing, was to bring together the researchers working on these projects so that results could be discussed and analyzed, and hopefully general insights be found, that could prove useful for future research. The meeting took place in Maria Laach, a small village some 40 miles south of Bonn, West Germany. 25 prominent researchers were invited to participate.

Analyses directed to understand people’s perceptions, personal and social behavior in computer mediated interactions, comprise a multidisciplinary area of study that involves, among others, computer science, psychology and sociology. In the last two decades a number of studies supported by Virtual Reality have been conducted to understand human behavior, in some cases the implications of the technology, or to reproduce artificial human behavior. This book presents a collection of studies from recognized researchers in the area.
