Book Advances in the Taxonomy and Biogeography of Crustacea in the Southern Hemisphere

Download or read book Advances in the Taxonomy and Biogeography of Crustacea in the Southern Hemisphere written by Nile Bruce and published by PenSoft Publishers LTD. This book was released on 2008-08-26 with total page 191 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first issue of ZooKeys devoted to taxonomy of the Crustacea, specifically crustaceans from the Southern Hemisphere, with contributions describing new taxa from Australia, New Caledonia, the Tasman Sea, Fiji, Madagascar and Antarctica. The issue comprises six papers on the Peracarida, and one each on Decapoda and Spinicaudata, describing four new genera, 12 new species, and new diagnoses to a further four genera. The first occurrence of the Eurasian clam shrimp Eoleptestheria ticinensis in Australia, is reported. There are three isopod contributions, two describing new species and new genera of deep-water Serolidae from Australia and the tropical southwestern Pacific, the third describing a new genus and new species of Anthuroidea from Australian coral reefs. One paper revises the amphipod genus Epimeria describing two species, one new, from Antarctic waters of the Ross and Weddell Seas. Two contributions on the Tanaidacea, describe new species from tropical Australia. The remaining paper describes a new species of freshwater crab (Family Potamonautidae) from Madagascar.

Book Antarctic Ecosystems

Download or read book Antarctic Ecosystems written by Alex D. Rogers and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2012-02-28 with total page 585 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since its discovery Antarctica has held a deep fascination for biologists. Extreme environmental conditions, seasonality and isolation have lead to some of the most striking examples of natural selection and adaptation on Earth. Paradoxically, some of these adaptations may pose constraints on the ability of the Antarctic biota to respond to climate change. Parts of Antarctica are showing some of the largest changes in temperature and other environmental conditions in the world. In this volume, published in association with the Royal Society, leading polar scientists present a synthesis of the latest research on the biological systems in Antarctica, covering organisms from microbes to vertebrate higher predators. This book comes at a time when new technologies and approaches allow the implications of climate change and other direct human impacts on Antarctica to be viewed at a range of scales; across entire regions, whole ecosystems and down to the level of species and variation within their genomes. Chapters address both Antarctic terrestrial and marine ecosystems, and the scientific and management challenges of the future are explored.

Book Advances in Decapod Crustacean Research

Download or read book Advances in Decapod Crustacean Research written by José P.M. Paula and published by Springer. This book was released on 2010-12-18 with total page 305 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Decapod crustaceans are a particularly important animal group in a variety of aquatic environments, such as freshwater, estuaries, and oceans. Research on this group has increased during recent decades, and relates to their economic and ecological importance. The papers included reflect current trends in decapod crustacean research, and present results on a diversity of specific research fields, grouped into the major themes: a) Systematics, Phylogeny, and Biogeography, b) Growth, Morphology, and Development, c) Ecology and Behaviour, d) Reproduction, and e) Fisheries and Culture. The Colloquia Crustacea Decapoda Mediterranea are devoted to decapod crustacean research, and organised on a 3-year basis by institutions of the Mediterranean geographical area. The scope of these meetings has progressively widened throughout the sequence of events, and presently welcomes contributions from crustacean research world-wide.

Book excerpt: Key features: Addresses the morphology, taxonomy, and phylogenetics that characterize the Aegla and their relationship to other decapod taxa Provides in-depth treatment of the evolutionary history, biogeography, reproduction, developmental biology, and the life cycle of the Aeglidae Discusses their physiology, ecology and behavior, including physiological mechanisms associated with freshwater adaptation, population dynamics, trophic ecology, agonistic and non-agonistic behavior Covers the current conservation status of all known species of aeglids, major threats to them, the use of aeglids as flagships or umbrella species, and conservation action planning Edited by researchers with established international reputations in this field, including internationally distinguished leaders in this field Aeglidae focuses on these unique crustaceans who are endemic to South America. The book is the first to summarize the diverse aspects of the Aeglidae, whose taxonomic features and phylogenetic relationships, evolutionary history and biogeographical background, biological characteristics, and current conservation awareness make them stand out among all other decapods. This will be an important reference not only for carcinologists working with this family of decapods, but also readers interested in the evolution, biogeography, taxonomy, phylogenetics, physiology, and reproductive ecology. ;lt;/EM>focuses on these unique crustaceans who are endemic to South America. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The types of animals and habitats found in subterranean ecosystems are described together with the geological formations in which they occur and their distribution on earth. The ecology of some subterranean terrestrial and aquatic systems are described together with subterranean ecosystems in different climatic zones. The nature of the adaptations to life in complete darkness, and to the often sparse and patchily distributed foods or various trophic origins, are described. A central part of the volume deals with the characteristics and process involved in the adaptation, speciation and evolution of subterranean animals. The volume concludes with a consideration of the conservation issues arising.
