Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dry eye syndrome is one of the most common types of ocular surface disorders that significantly worsen the quality of life of tens of millions of people worldwide. In the last decades, researchers worldwide investigated the composition and regulatory mechanisms of the preocular tear film to better understand dry eye syndrome. The tear film, in fact, plays a critical role in maintaining corneal and conjunctival integrity, protecting the eyes against infections, and preserving visual acuity. Recent scientific discoveries helped us gain a more and more accurate understanding of the structure and functioning of the tear film and how disorders in the tear film relate to dry eye syndrome. Today, ophthalmologists benefit from sophisticated diagnostic techniques, and they have at their disposal a wide range of effective therapeutic options to manage dry eye syndrome. This book illustrates the most recent research results in the diagnosis and treatment of dry eye syndrome, and it is of interest to the broad audience that comprises ophthalmologists, researchers, and students.

Book A Case Based Guide to Eye Pain

Download or read book A Case Based Guide to Eye Pain written by Michael S. Lee and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-11-15 with total page 286 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Diagnosing a patient with unexplained ocular pain can be time-consuming and difficult, but taking an anatomic approach and excluding causes along the way can aid in the diagnosis. This book provides the reader with a systematic evaluation plan for these cases, written and edited by leaders in the field. A Case-Based Guide to Eye Pain is written for both ophthalmologists and neuro-ophthalmologists since there are not enough neuro-ophthalmologists to treat the number of patients with unexplained ocular pain and general ophthalmologists are having to take on the diagnosis and treatment of these patients. Organized in an easy-to-use manner, each case covers the following key elements: the chief complaint, history of the present illness, the examination, assessment and plan, follow-up, alternate perspective, summary points, and key references. Tables are also available to help the reader rapidly sort through cases that may apply to a sign, symptom, historical feature, diagnostic test or treatment option. This allows the practitioner who has a patient with a particular concern to use the tables to identify a case discussion. Additionally, A Case-based Guide to Eye Pain includes an appendices with the general approach to eye pain and anatomy of the trigeminal pathway and its relation to eye pain.

Book Advances in Non Steroidal Treatment Approaches to Reduce Inflammation in Dry Eye Disease

Download or read book Advances in Non Steroidal Treatment Approaches to Reduce Inflammation in Dry Eye Disease written by Devin Bharadia and published by . This book was released on 2017 with total page 42 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The increased prevalence of dry eye disease in the developed world along with elementary forms treatment has raised question to other causes and possible solutions to the underlying root of the condition. Dry eye disease can affect individuals of all ages but has been found to be more common in those over 65 years old. Approximately 1 in 7 (~14%) above 65 are diagnosed with dry eye disease and research has shown that the prevalence of this condition seems to double after the age of 59. Many factors can contribute to the diagnosis of dry eye disease such as preexisting systemic diseases, medications, and contact lens wear. Chronic dry eye disease can potentially damage the ocular surface and cause various forms visual disturbance. Previous forms of dry eye treatment have included multiple instillations of lubricating drops and other forms of lid hygiene. Other non-pharmacologic forms of controlling symptoms have included punctal occlusion, enviromental control, and even eyelid surgery. These treatments are palliative and usually do not address the underlying cause of the condition. Research has suggested that there is a strong link between inflammation and dry eye disease. Newer forms of dry eye treatment have focused on attacking inflammation as the source of the problem and results from these forms of treatments have been quite successful. This literature review serves to outline novel research evaluating the use of newly developed forms of non-steroidal dry eye therapy that address inflammation as the root of the underlying disease.

Book Lacrimal Gland Tear Film and Dry Eye Syndromes 2

Download or read book Lacrimal Gland Tear Film and Dry Eye Syndromes 2 written by David A. Sullivan and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 1013 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the past two decades, a significant international research effort has been di rected toward understanding the composition and regulation of the preocular tear film. This effort has been motivated by the recognition that the tear film plays an essential role in maintaining corneal and conjunctival integrity, protecting against microbial challenge, and preserving visual acuity. In addition, research has been stimulated by the knowledge that alteration or deficiency of the tear film, which occurs in countless individuals throughout the world, may lead to desiccation of the ocular surface, ulceration and perfo ration of the cornea, an increased incidence of infectious disease, and, potentially, pro nounced visual disability and blindness. To promote further progress in this field of vision research, the Second International Conference on the Lacrimal Gland, Tear Film and Dry Eye Syndromes: Basic Science and Clinical Relevance was held at the Southampton Princess Resort in Bermuda November 16-19, 1996. This conference was organized and directed by David A. Sullivan, Ph. D. , codirected by Darlene A. Dartt, Ph. D. , and Michele A. Meneray, Ph. D. , and sponsored by the Schepens Eye Research Institute (Boston, MA), an affiliate of Harvard Medical School. The meeting was designed to assess critically the current knowledge and "state of the art" research on the structure and function of lacrimal tissue, tears, and the ocular sur face in both health and disease.

Book Drug Discovery and Evaluation Methods in Clinical Pharmacology

Download or read book Drug Discovery and Evaluation Methods in Clinical Pharmacology written by H.Gerhard Vogel and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2010-12-15 with total page 576 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Drug Discovery and Evaluation has become a more and more difficult, expensive and time-consuming process. The effect of a new compound has to be detected by in vitro and in vivo methods of pharmacology. The activity spectrum and the potency compared to existing drugs have to be determined. As these processes can be divided up stepwise we have designed a book series "Drug Discovery and Evaluation" in the form of a recommendation document. The methods to detect drug targets are described in the first volume of this series "Pharmacological Assays" comprising classical methods as well as new technologies. Before going to man, the most suitable compound has to be selected by pharmacokinetic studies and experiments in toxicology. These preclinical methods are described in the second volume „Safety and Pharmacokinetic Assays". Only then are first studies in human beings allowed. Special rules are established for Phase I studies. Clinical pharmacokinetics are performed in parallel with human studies on tolerability and therapeutic effects. Special studies according to various populations and different therapeutic indications are necessary. These items are covered in the third volume: „Methods in Clinical Pharmacology".
