  • Pages : 455 pages

Download or read book Hepatobiliary Cancer written by Paul H. Sugarbaker and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-03-09 with total page 455 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When one deals with cancer, the hepatobiliary malignancies present a chal lenge to the oncologists that can be characterized as a series of unsolved clinical and biological dilemmas. Liver metastases from colorectal and other gastrointestinal malignancies, hepatocellular carcinoma, cholangiocar cinoma, and gall bladder cancer present an array of problems but have two features in common. These are high morbidity and mortality with an overall poor result from treatment. Why is it that hepatobiliary cancer carries with it such a dismal prognosis? First of all, these diseases present, for the most part, in an advanced state. To this point in time the oncologist has had no help from early diagnosis or screening. Only the occasional patient followed by ultrasound or a tumor marker has the disease diagnosed in an asymptomatic state. By the time these diseases become symptomatic, curative treatment options have usually disappeared. Evolution has placed the liver in a protected position in order to avoid injury to the soft parenchyma. As with many other internal organs, the nerve supply is extremely limited. These two anatomic features result in a great lack of early warning signs of cancer.

Book Hepatopancreatoduodenectomy

Download or read book Hepatopancreatoduodenectomy written by Fujio Hanyu and published by Springer. This book was released on 1997-01-03 with total page 196 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hepatopancreatoduodenectomy (HPD) is a radical new surgical procedure developed in Japan to treat patients with biliary tract carcinoma. The development and clinical application of HPD have been made possible through research conducted primarily by Japanese investigators on common routes of the spread of biliary tract carcinoma. Still regarded as a radical procedure because of its technical difficulty and possible complications, HPD is not yet widely practiced anywhere in the world. The authors of this volume, who are pioneers in the field, are convinced that recent progress in health-care technology will make HPD a safer and more commonly accepted procedure in the near future. The book is designed to share the experience of Japanese researchers with those working in the field throughout the world. The contents include a review of the historical development of HPD in Japan, indications and conditions for HPD, perioperative examinations, and patient management. Also presented are practical aspects of surgical technique and countermeasures against postoperative complications.

Book Ultrasound Guided Liver Surgery

Download or read book Ultrasound Guided Liver Surgery written by GUIDO TORZILLI and published by Springer. This book was released on 2014-01-10 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ultrasound guidance of liver surgery is a very sophisticated approach that permits the performance of otherwise unfeasible operations, discloses the true extent of tumors, increases the indications for hepatectomy, and renders surgery safer. Despite this, it has remained relatively neglected in the literature over the past two decades, during which time much progress has been achieved. This is the first atlas on the subject, and it is comprehensive in scope. The state of the art in the use of ultrasound for resection guidance is carefully documented, and new techniques for exploration of the biliary tract and facilitation of transplant surgery are presented. Further important topics include the role of ultrasound in laparoscopic approaches, the use of contrast agents for diagnosis and staging, and developments in the planning of surgical strategy. The editor is a leading authority whose group has been responsible for a variety of advances in the field. He has brought together other experts whose aim throughout is to provide clear information and guidance on the optimal use of ultrasound when performing liver surgery. This atlas is intended especially for hepatobiliary surgeons but will also be of considerable value for general surgeons.
