Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Advances in Space Science, Volume 1 brings together research and developments in the astronautical sciences. This volume is composed of six chapters that also cover the field of bioastronautics, which involves the human aspects of space travel. The opening chapter deals with the orbits and interplanetary trajectories and a critical evaluation of interplanetary communications. The next chapters consider the problem of supplying power on board orbital and space vehicles, power being needed for many tasks in space, including the operation of communication systems. The remaining three chapters treat manned space cabin systems, the effects of radiation on man in space, and the nutritional aspects of space flight. This book will be of great value to space scientists, engineers, and researchers.

Book The Sun to the Earth and Beyond

Download or read book The Sun to the Earth and Beyond written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2003-07-01 with total page 196 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The sun is the source of energy for life on earth and is the strongest modulator of the human physical environment. In fact, the Sun's influence extends throughout the solar system, both through photons, which provide heat, light, and ionization, and through the continuous outflow of a magnetized, supersonic ionized gas known as the solar wind. While the accomplishments of the past decade have answered important questions about the physics of the Sun, the interplanetary medium, and the space environments of Earth and other solar system bodies, they have also highlighted other questions, some of which are long-standing and fundamental. The Sun to the Earthâ€"and Beyond organizes these questions in terms of five challenges that are expected to be the focus of scientific investigations in solar and space physics during the coming decade and beyond.

Book Planetary Exploration Horizon 2061

Download or read book Planetary Exploration Horizon 2061 written by Michel Blanc and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2022-10-28 with total page 456 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Planetary Exploration Horizon 2061: A Long-Term Perspective for Planetary Exploration synthesizes all the material elaborated and discussed during three workshops devoted to the Horizon 2061 foresight exercise. Sections cover the science of planetary systems, space missions to solar system objects, technologies for exploration, and infrastructures and services to support the missions and to maximize their science return. The editors follow the path of the implementation of a planetary mission, from the needed support in terms of navigation and communication, through the handling of samples returned to Earth, to the development of more permanent infrastructures for scientific human outposts on the Moon and Mars. This book also includes a special chapter entirely devoted to contributions from students and early-career scientists: the “Horizon 2061 generation and a final chapter on important avenues for the actual implementation of the planetary missions coming out of our “Dreams for Horizon 2061 : International cooperation, and the growing role and initiatives of private enterprise in planetary exploration. Provides a logical link between scientific questions and the technologies needed to thoroughly address them Organized chapters present a logical road map of subjects, while also stimulating a cross-disciplinary understanding of the scientific and technical challenges of planetary exploration Contains illustrations and tables that capture and synthesize knowledge of a broad readership

Book Advances in Space Science and Technology

Download or read book Advances in Space Science and Technology written by Frederick I. Ordway and published by Academic Press. This book was released on 2014-12-02 with total page 479 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Advances in Space Science and Technology, Volume 7 provides an in depth discussion of both resources and base construction on the Moon. This book discusses the Moon as the nearest astronomical objective and the logical place where man will accumulate the experience needed for more ambitious enterprises. Organized into seven chapters, this volume begins with an overview of the science of selenology and examines possible substances from which propellants may be processed. This text then assesses the lunar environment in terms of mining and engineering operations. Other chapters consider the problems associated with the location of useful materials, processing propellants, and their storage and transfer. This book discusses as well the utilization of structures made from materials imported from Earth and of those prepared from indigenous materials. The final chapter deals with four major phenomena, namely, interplanetary plasma, magnetic fields, cosmic rays, and dust. This book is a valuable resource for space scientists and astronomers.

Book Recapturing a Future for Space Exploration

Download or read book Recapturing a Future for Space Exploration written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2012-01-30 with total page 464 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: More than four decades have passed since a human first set foot on the Moon. Great strides have been made in our understanding of what is required to support an enduring human presence in space, as evidenced by progressively more advanced orbiting human outposts, culminating in the current International Space Station (ISS). However, of the more than 500 humans who have so far ventured into space, most have gone only as far as near-Earth orbit, and none have traveled beyond the orbit of the Moon. Achieving humans' further progress into the solar system had proved far more difficult than imagined in the heady days of the Apollo missions, but the potential rewards remain substantial. During its more than 50-year history, NASA's success in human space exploration has depended on the agency's ability to effectively address a wide range of biomedical, engineering, physical science, and related obstacles-an achievement made possible by NASA's strong and productive commitments to life and physical sciences research for human space exploration, and by its use of human space exploration infrastructures for scientific discovery. The Committee for the Decadal Survey of Biological and Physical Sciences acknowledges the many achievements of NASA, which are all the more remarkable given budgetary challenges and changing directions within the agency. In the past decade, however, a consequence of those challenges has been a life and physical sciences research program that was dramatically reduced in both scale and scope, with the result that the agency is poorly positioned to take full advantage of the scientific opportunities offered by the now fully equipped and staffed ISS laboratory, or to effectively pursue the scientific research needed to support the development of advanced human exploration capabilities. Although its review has left it deeply concerned about the current state of NASA's life and physical sciences research, the Committee for the Decadal Survey on Biological and Physical Sciences in Space is nevertheless convinced that a focused science and engineering program can achieve successes that will bring the space community, the U.S. public, and policymakers to an understanding that we are ready for the next significant phase of human space exploration. The goal of this report is to lay out steps and develop a forward-looking portfolio of research that will provide the basis for recapturing the excitement and value of human spaceflight-thereby enabling the U.S. space program to deliver on new exploration initiatives that serve the nation, excite the public, and place the United States again at the forefront of space exploration for the global good.
