Book Viruses in Foods

Download or read book Viruses in Foods written by Sagar Goyal and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2007-01-15 with total page 355 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first book to focus entirely on viruses in foods. It collates information on the occurrence, detection, transmission, and epidemiology of viruses in various foods. Although methods for bacterial detection in food are available, methods for detection of viruses in food, with the exception of shellfish, are not available. It is important, therefore, to develop methods for direct examination of food for viruses and to explore alternate indicators that can accurately reflect the virological quality of food. This book addresses these issues along with strategies for the prevention and control of viral contamination of food.

Download or read book The Parvoviruses written by Kenneth I. Berns and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-03-09 with total page 419 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Parvoviridae have been of increasing interest to reseachers in the past decade. Their small size and simple structure have made them ame nable to detailed physiochemical analysis, and from this work relatively detailed information has resulted that has signficantly increased our un derstanding of the biology of these viruses. It has become clear that the Parvoviridae are of interest not only for their own sake, but also because their relative simplicity renders them useful probes in the study of the biology of host cells and of other DNA viruses with which they interact. The Dependovirus genus, for instance, contains the defective adeno-as sociated viruses (AA V), which require a coinfection with either an ad enovirus or a herpesvirus for productive multiplication. Studies of AA V, therefore, necessarily impinge on our understanding of the control of macromolecular synthesis by the helper virus. Similarly AA V has been reported to inhibit the oncogenicity of both adeno-and herpesviruses and has been used as a probe of mechanism in these instances as well. Finally, AA V establishes latent infections in vivo and is the only mammalian DNA virus where a comparable model system has been established in cell culture. This system has allowed study of the mechanism of latent infection at the molecular level."

Book Advances and Insights in the Diagnosis of Viral Infections and Vaccines Development in Animals

Download or read book Advances and Insights in the Diagnosis of Viral Infections and Vaccines Development in Animals written by Jingqiang Ren and published by Frontiers Media SA. This book was released on 2024-07-09 with total page 266 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Viral infections in animals occasionally develop potentially fatal diseases that affect almost all organs. Especially in zoonotic diseases, the causative agents that usually exist in animals can be transmitted between animal species to humans directly or via a vector. Throughout recent history, disease outbreaks and pandemics including SARS, H7N9, Ebola, and COVID-19, have led to a dramatic loss of human life worldwide and harmed economic growth. The most effective strategies for the control of disease are vaccination and early diagnosis. Vaccines directed against viral and bacterial pathogens prevent catastrophic losses of life in humans, other animals, and plants, and are considered among the greatest public health achievements. Rapid and accurate detection of pathogens and identification of the aetiologic agent play a crucial role at every step of disease management. In the case of zoonotic illnesses, early detection of wildlife aids in the establishment of a surveillance system, allowing for the introduction of efficient and timely disease control interventions to prevent transmission from animal to human. At present, variations and deletions in the genome of the virus are of common occurrence during evolution, coupled with the new emerging disease and cross-species disease transmission, which are increasing the potential for the transmissibility and severity of the disease. For this reason, developing safe and effective vaccines, and enhancing the sensitivity and specificity of the diagnostic methods are urgently required. The scope of this research topic will share and discuss findings in the areas of diagnosis of viral diseases or vaccine development for all animal species, including terrestrial and aquatic mammals, fishes, insects, birds, etc.

Book New Insights into Parvovirus Research

Download or read book New Insights into Parvovirus Research written by Giorgio Gallinella and published by MDPI. This book was released on 2020-04-15 with total page 342 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Viruses in the Parvoviridae family constitute one of the most diverse and intriguing fields of research. While they all share an ssDNA genome and a small capsid, they can differ widely in structure, genome organization and expression, virus–cell interaction, and impact on the host. Exploring such diversity and unraveling the inherent complexity in these apparently simple viruses is an ongoing endeavor and commitment for the scientific community. The translational implications of research on parvoviruses are relevant. Within the family, some viruses are important human and veterinary pathogens, in need of diagnostic methods and antiviral strategies; other viruses have long been studied and engineered as tools for oncolytic therapy, or as sophisticated gene delivery vectors, and can now display their wide and expanding applicative potential. This Special Issue of Viruses collects recent contributions in the field of parvovirus research, with a focus on new insights and research on unresolved issues, as well as new approaches exploiting systemic methodologies. Evolution, structural biology, viral replication, virus–host interaction, pathogenesis and immunity, and viral oncotherapy are a selection of the topics addressed in the issue that can be of relevance to the community involved in parvovirus research and of interest to a wider audience.
