In the first chapter, animal science is introduced along with major hurdles related to animal agriculture and then proposes a solution for these grand challenges on a global scale. In the second chapter, the author focuses on canine leptospirosis, a zoonotic disease of worldwide distribution, which affects both humans and animals with humans being an accidental host. The third chapter assesses the outcomes of current research and future directions for improving post-thaw viability of stallion sperm (since the first success of mammalian cell cryopreservation, it has become a major method of cell preservation for both human and veterinary medicine). The fourth chapter focuses on the evaluation of all main hematological, biochemical, and coproparazitologic changes, besides larval designation found within pastures of Dorper breed sheeps and females through peripartum. In the fifth chapter, in the search for new food sources that contribute to the optimization of livestock production, the authors discuss the possibility of using waste from a marine plant commonly found on the Mediterranean coasts. The next two chapters focus on penguin physiology, behavior as well as the identification of viruses capable of infecting both free-living healthy penguins, and the pathogens that may be related to the release of rehabilitated penguins and the implication of these agents in the conservation of the species. The remaining chapters of this book review current knowledge on the intra and inter-species behavior of Turkey vultures; molecular mechanisms operating in the Xenopus osmoregulatory organs and the physiological role of AQPs in Xenopus; and the impact of extended drought on the reproductive cycle of an endangered tropical killifish in the Brazilian semiarid region. The last chapter is a commentary on the the use of field sampling techniques and computerised video tracking in the study of directional grasshopper movement, influenced by climatic stimuli such as temperature, light, wind direction and habitat factors.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Advances in Animal Science and Zoology. Volume 14 first explores progress in drone-based research methods applied to animal ecology, in terms of applications to the field study of large birds of prey. Drone-based research methods have evolved out of the larger technology field of geomatics and are entwined with developments in GPS and biotelemetry, which enable accurate location recording, image capture and specimen behavioral assessment. Next, the authors discuss how our understanding of the reproductive physiology of male honey bees has advanced due to improved breeding techniques in apiculture, especially artificial insemination. A bioindicator is an organism sensitive to environmental changes and, therefore, its absence or scarcity indicates that there is some factor that is modifying the normal conditions of the environment. In one study, the authors explore the way in which amphibians are excellent bioindicators. Mitochondria-rich cells are integral component of the heterocellular amphibian skin epithelium and common to all species, participating in Cl- conductance and H+ secretion. As such, a graphic cell model is used to describe the Cl- conductance pathway based on the available data. The molecular basis of this complex pathway remains to be explored. Four species of closely-related Iguanian lizards coexist along the length of the pampean coastal sand dunes of Argentina in assemblages with different combinations that vary from two to four species, according to the locality. The authors examine community organization and species coexistence of these assemblages at two scales: local and regional. The lizard endemic in the Coachella Valley, a region including cities aiming to benefit from a burgeoning second home-golf resort market, is explored. The entire range of the Coachella Valley fringe-toed lizard (Uma inornata), was restricted to a 33,500 ha sand dune system that occupied the center of the valley. By 1980 over 95% of that sand dune system was developed or fragmented into parcels too small support lizard populations. The penultimate chapter reviews a number of factors that impinge on shoal-mate choice in fish, including body coloration and pattern, body size, shoal size, sex, behavior, and background coloration. The objective of the concluding work is to compare the size of the right and left bulls of the Tursiops truncates, as well as between males and females. Six morphometric measurements of eight organisms were obtained and a student t was applied for comparison with a significance of p

Download or read book Advances in Animal Science and Zoology Volume 11 written by Owen P. Jenkins and published by . This book was released on 2018-03-15 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this collection, the authors discuss oropharyngeal trichomonosis, a disease that affects wild and domestic birds, summarizing the most significant aspects of the disease: the biology, diagnosis and treatment options. Recent scientific advances in the pathology, epidemiology and control of the disease are also discussed. Following this, current animal breeding strategies in organic farms are analyzed to determine the animal breeds that could potentially benefit from different organic dairy farming systems. In a subsequent review, a status assessment (based on a comprehensive literature review) of the conservation issues of the West African lion is conducted. The authors conclude that without an intensive effort to rectify the factors for the extinction of the West African lion (human population growth and urbanization, desertification, decline of food sources, cattle herding, hunting and farming) and increased public acknowledgement of this comparatively neglected lion subspecies, the West African lion has a bleak future. This book includes a review of the knowledge of extended family bonds between females in mammals and birds, focusing on how waterfowl are particularly predisposed to female-centered kin clans. A study is presented which investigates whether lineal kin, i.e. mothers and their adult daughters, form long-term bonds in a well-studied model organism within waterfowl, the greylag goose. The Atlantic Forest biome is exhibited as one of the most biodiverse and threatened biomes in the world. The authors conduct a quantitative analysis on the published data about parasitism by Amblyomma ticks on birds of the Atlantic Forest, testing whether ecological and morphological variables of the host are associated with parasitism by ticks. This compilation also includes a review of Cryptosporidium, describing the history, taxonomy, epidemiology cycle, clinical signs, diagnostic, treatment and prevention. Next, exposure of Drosophila suzukii, a fruit fly species native to Southeast Asia, to two fruits, blueberries and raspberries, is analyzed for possible effects on sexual behavior and fecundity. The parasitoid jewel wasp genus Nasonia is offered as an excellent model system to investigate genetic, behavioral and ecological aspects of chemical communication. Three main pheromone communication systems are discussed in light of their respective chemical basis, hierarchical interplay, species-specificity and potential contribution to prezygotic reproductive isolation. In closing, the clinical signs of Giardia infection are discussed, including delayed growth, dehydration, weight loss, and recurrent diarrhea. The occurrence of Giardia spp. in birds from a particular site is studied to demonstrate the extent of the disease, its specificity to its hosts, and its risk and transmission potential.

Book Advances in Animal Science and Zoology

Download or read book Advances in Animal Science and Zoology written by Shalini Vaswani and published by . This book was released on 2023-12 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Animal science refers to the biological science and management of livestock, including cattle, horses, sheep, pigs, and fowl etc. Zoology is the scientific research of the structure, physiology, classification, distribution and behavior of animals. Humans have found different uses for pets in disciplines such as sports, entertainment, manufacturing, companionship and scientific research. Coupled with food production uses, we discover that animals are actually central to all of our existence, whether we realize it or not. As agriculture and its livestock are vital to our livelihood, they have become a key aspect of our culture, our impact on the environment and the direct or indirect effects of our daily activities. A more sedentary lifestyle began with the domestication of animals. Livestock provide a secure source of food and clothing. A reliable food supply meant a rise in the population and more individuals made it possible to sub-divide labor within the community. Many scholars believe that without the domestication of animals, humans would never have been civilized. This volume introduces domesticated animals as those that are useful in the home and are easily raised and cared for by humans. Some common domesticated animals include, horses, cattle, dogs, sheep, buffaloes, and poultry.
