Book excerpt: The multiple natures of today's space missions with regard to operational lifetime, orbital environment, cost and size of spacecraft, to name just a few, present such a broad range of performance requirements to be met by the solar array that no single design can suffice to meet them all. The result is a demand for development of specialized solar cell types that help to optimize overall satellite performance within a specified cost range for any given space mission. Historically, space solar array performance has been optimized for a given mission by tailoring the features of silicon solar cells to account for the orbital environment and average operating conditions expected during the mission. It has become necessary to turn to entirely new photovoltaic materials and device designs to meet the requirements of future missions, both in the near and far term. This paper will outline some of the mission drivers and resulting performance requirements that must be met by advanced solar cells, and provide an overview of some of the advanced cell technologies under development to meet them. The discussion will include high efficiency, radiation hard single junction cells; monolithic and mechanically stacked multiple bandgap cells; and thin film cells. Dr. Fraas has been active in the development of Solar Cells and Solar Electric Power Systems for space and terrestrial applications since 1975. His research team at Boeing demonstrated the first GaAs/GaSb tandem concentrator solar cell in 1989 with a world record energy conversion efficiency of 35, garnering awards from Boeing and NASA. He has over 30 years of experience at Hughes Research Labs, Chevron Research Co, and the Boeing High Technology Center working with advanced semiconductor devices. In a pioneering paper, he proposed the InGaP/GaInAs/Ge triple junction solar cell predicting a cell terrestrial conversion efficiency of 40 at 300 suns concentration. Having become today’s predominant cell for space satellites, that cell is now entering high volume production for terrestrial Concentrated Photovoltaic (CPV) systems. Since joining JX Crystals, Dr. Fraas has pioneered the development of various thermophotovoltaic (TPV) systems based on the new GaSb infrared sensitive PV cell. Dr. Fraas holds degrees from Caltech (B.Sc. Physics), Harvard (M. A. Applied Physics), and USC (Ph.D. EE).

Traditionally, they are configured to extract maximum power at the end of their life and not have a system which dynamically extracts the maximum power over their entire life. This work demonstrates the benefit of dynamic re-configuration of spacecraft's solar arrays to access the full power available from the solar panels throughout their lifetime. This dynamic re-configuration is achieved using enhancement mode GaN devices as the switches due to their low Ron and small footprint. This work discusses hardware Implementation challenges and a prototype board is designed using components-off-the-shelf (COTS) to study the behavior of photovoltaic (PV) panels with different configurations of switches between 5 PV cells. The measurement results from the board proves the feasibility of the idea, showing the power improvements of having the switch structure. The measurement results are used to simulate a 1kW satellite system and understand practical trade-offs of this idea in actual satellite power systems. Additionally, this work also presents the implementation of CMOS controller integrated circuit (IC) in 0.18um technology. The CMOS controller IC includes switched capacitor converters in open loop to provide the floating voltages required to drive the GaN switches. Each CMOS controller IC can drive 10 switches in series and parallel combination. Furthermore, the designed controller IC is expected to operate under high total doses of radiation, thus enabling the controller modules to be placed on the solar cell wings of the satellites.

Book excerpt: In order that photovoltaic solar cells may be used more effectively to provide electrical power for spacecraft, it is desirable to refine the engineering design of solar cells and power systems, based on a better understanding of the space radiation environment and of radiation damage effects on semiconductor components. The objective of this handbook is to provide a summary of some of the useful analytical methods and test data which can be applied in designing radiation resistant power systems. It is found that the most serious obstacle which prevents accurate prediction of solar cell degradation for earth satellites is our inadequate knowledge of the fluxes and energy spectra of electrons and protons in the magnetosphere. When the space environment can be better defined, it will be possible to predict more accurately the degradation of present day types of silicon solar cells, for which the radiation damage characteristics have been quite well determined by laboratory research. As improved types of solar cells and materials become available, it will be necessary to make laboratory measurements of their radiation resistance to protons and electrons in order to predict their performance in space. Therefore, the performance data presented herein may become obsolete. However, it is hoped that the methods for data correlation and analysis presented here will be an aid to understanding the nature of the problems involved, and will be useful in the conduct of engineering analysis.
