Book Rapid Repair of Bomb Damaged Runways Phase I Preliminary Laboratory Investigation

Download or read book Rapid Repair of Bomb Damaged Runways Phase I Preliminary Laboratory Investigation written by P. S. Bussone and published by . This book was released on 1972 with total page 35 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Three cements have been studied for possible use in the rapid repair of bomb-managed runways. These are: (a) lumnite (L), a high-alumina cement which was blended with portland cements type I, II, and III, regulated-set cement, and other concrete admixtures; (b) regulated-set cement (R), a halogenated calcium aluminate cement which was blended with gypsum additives in varying amounts from 0 to 12.5 percent and also mixed with an accelerator, sodium metasilicate (SMS); and (c) ordinary portland cement with various accelerators, Sigunit (S), sodium metasilicate (SMS), and sodium carbonate. Compressive strength of 2-in. cubes were determined at ages varying from 45 min to 28 days to establish strength development information. With some cements, neat slurry grout-type mixtures were made and tested in the same manner as the mortar mixtures. Water-cement ratios varied from 0.50 to 0.70 for the mortar mixtures and flow, when measured, was determined by the flow table method. With the neat slurry mixtures w/c ratios varied from 0.30 to 0.80, the efflux time being measured by the flow-cone method. The results indicate the following: (a) that many of the accelerators and so-called fast-setting cements do not develop 1-hour strengths sufficient for use in rapid repair of bomb-damaged runways; (b) two materials studied have yielded 1-hour compressive strengths in excess of 1000 psi. One is a cement, regulated-set, a proprietary product of the Portland Cement Association, and the second is an accelerator, known as sodium metasilicate, which has shown promise in both mixtures of ordinary portland and regulated-set cements.

Book RAPID REPAIR OF BOMB DAMAGED RUNWAYS

Download or read book RAPID REPAIR OF BOMB DAMAGED RUNWAYS written by B. R. Hickman and published by . This book was released on 1966 with total page 103 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report is concerned with the evaluation of a variety of potential approaches to the rapid repair of bomb-damaged runways, the development of these materials systems, and a small-scale field demonstration of their utility. Fifteen distinct approaches were evaluated in the laboratory: a graded density urethane foam, sulfur, chemical grout, liquid plug, thermosetting resins, prepreg fiber reinforced sheets, Joosten process solidification, asphalts, calcium acrylate, calcium-ligno sulfonate, fuel oil-molasses, quick-set cements, epoxy with expanded fillers, and resin/cement systems. The systems which best filled the requirement of time of set, ease of application, and structures, were the following: epoxy/sand, quick-set cement/epoxy, and quick-set cement/sand. Small-scale field trials of these systems indicated that one or more of them could be tailored to meet test requirements, but that considerable R and D work was yet necessary to prove their full utility. Recommendations for a further R and D program are given. (Author).

Book Rapid Repair of Bomb damaged Runways

Download or read book Rapid Repair of Bomb damaged Runways written by G. T. Pruitt and published by . This book was released on 1968 with total page 173 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The work covered in this volume (II) includes the design, fabrication and testing of equipment to dispense Fast-Fix at rates up to 1000 gpm, and the demonstration of the overall material-equipment-procedure combination at Eglin Air Force Base. The equipment developed to perform the dispensing function consisted of a jet-eductor mixing system supplied with metered Fast-Fix cements from a screw-feed solids hopper and with mixing water from a speed-controlled water pump. The mixing unit was trailer mounted, powered with V-12 diesel engines and incorporated in an all hydraulic drive system. Solids were continuously supplied at a rate of 12,000 pounds per minute by a series of dump trucks via an external solids feeder. Design, fabrication and developmental testing were conducted on an accelerated basis. (Author).

Book A Concept for Rapid Repair of Bomb Damaged Runways Using Regulated Set Cement

Download or read book A Concept for Rapid Repair of Bomb Damaged Runways Using Regulated Set Cement written by George C. Hoff and published by . This book was released on 1975 with total page 164 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A concept of a system using regulated-set cement for the rapid repair of bomb-damaged runways is presented. Bomb craters formed by the explosion of 750-lb. bombs beneath the pavement are repaired by concurrently filling the lower regions of the crater with the ejecta from the crater and a regulated-set cement cellular concrete. As filler nears the top of the crater, the ejecta is omitted and a stronger cellular concrete is placed as the subbase material. A regulated-set cement mortar is placed as the wearing surface. This repair can be applied to make runways operational 4 hours from the start of the repair. The concept was evaluated by repairing a number of smaller craters using the equipment and procedures developed for the repair concept. The equipment consists of portable, continuous batching and pumping equipment. The evaluations indicated taht the equipment possessed sufficient flexibility to repair everything from potholes to full-size craters. All regulated-set cement repairs are permanent and do not have to be upgraded or removed and replaced. Implementation of the regulated-set cement repair concept reduces manpower requirements approximately 25% from present repair procedures. The level of manpower skills required is similar to those presently used.
