Book excerpt: The U.S. Global Positioning System (GPS) has an established reputation as a robust global technology allowing users to determine their locations using receivers incorporated in various devices including cell phones, PDAs, and watches. While GPS works well in open sky environments, location finding in weak-signal conditions, such as urban canyons and indoors, is challenging and has been the subject of extensive research. Assisted-GPS (A-GPS) is one of the concepts that help receivers acquire weaker signals by exploiting assistance data received from wireless networks, such as orbital parameters, and coarse time and location references. A-GPS is currently standardized technology in cellular communication since it evolved as a natural integration of GPS and wireless communication. Receiver technology developers work on more sensitive algorithms for enabling positioning in weak signal environments and typically rely on signal simulators for testing real-world scenarios. As the terrestrial assistance data channel becomes a foundational link for A-GPS, the statistical modeling of information delivery delays should be addressed for more adequate simulations as channel delays affect receiver operations. In particular, delays contribute to receiver response typically defined as a Time-to-First-Fix (TTFF). The main aspect of the dissertation is to study A-GPS channels by (a) developing a testbed for A-GPS simulation that includes a conventional GPS simulator integrated with an advanced channel model simulator and assistance data delivery over the Internet accessed through wireless links; (b) using the testbed to suggest channel delay measurement methodology; (c) conducting channel measurement campaigns and collecting representative data; and (d) proposing channel models that can be incorporated in A-GPS simulators for generating more realistic assistance communication scenarios for receiver testing. Different from conventional approaches, this dissertation promotes measurements of complete cycle delays including physical propagation and network delays due to data losses. It makes proposed methodology broader and applicable for other communication technologies. A case study of network channel delay modeling is conducted for Power Line Communications (PLC), which is also sensitive to delays in interactive applications (e.g. videoconferencing, remote control systems, online games). PLC emerged as a competitive technology for indoor broadband communications exploiting the existing power line infrastructure for data transmissions. The proposed network channel delay models are essentially based on testbeds for conducting measurement campaigns. The last aspect of the dissertation is the accessibility of testbed platforms for education, training, and resource sharing. Broader access to unique testbeds and experimentation labs in general is an essential component of engineering research, collaboration, and learning. However, high equipment and maintenance costs constrain experimentation infrastructure. Software simulators, based on mathematical models, address this problem to some extent, but interaction with real systems provides a richer and more authentic experience and is often the only available choice. This dissertation presents a recent initiative on designing a remote experimentation platform named eComLab for radio-communication enabling broader access. It addresses two goals: sharing testbeds for research needs and allowing practical educational lab offerings using limited equipment resources.

It is a satellite-based radio navigation system. It provides suitably equipped users the capability to precisely determine three-dimensional position and velocity and time information on a global basis. The capability was developed to provide the United States and DoD with worldwide navigation, position, and timing capabilities to support military operations by enhancing ground, sea, and air warfighting efficiencies. However, by presidential directive, it was officially made available to the civilian community in 1983. GPS also provides the capability to conduct time transfer for synchronization purposes through the use of precise time standards. GPS supports a secondary mission to provide a highly survivable military capability to detect, locate, and report nuclear detonations in the Earth's atmosphere and in near-Earth space in real time. The study provides a wealth of technical information about this vital satellite-based system and its complex history. The Department of Defense is exponentially increasing the acquisition of joint complex systems that deliver needed capabilities demanded by our warfighter. Book excerpt: The Global Positioning System (GPS) has become an important asset in the lives of civilians and defense organizations. GPS uses include positioning, navigation, timing, as well as many other daily applications. With such dependence, protection against attacks on the system is paramount to continue its effectiveness. Attacks on its signal is the easiest way for enemies to degrade and harm not only everyday functioning for civilians, but a nations defense as well. Jamming interference and spoofing are the two most frequent attacks on GPS signals. Could these two attacks cause significant effect on military operations? We use a System Effectiveness Analysis Simulation (SEAS) model to emulate a special operation force (SOF) using GPS recovering a weapon of mass destruction (WMD) against an opposing military in an urban canyon environment. Simulating jamming (modeled as availability and accuracy) and spoofing (modeled as timeliness) of the GPS satellites signal produces a greater understanding of its impact on this type of operation. Statistical analysis determined the significance of these types of attacks on several responses for this simulation. Our results include a designed experiment capturing how individual model factors representing spoofing and jamming can degrade GPS performance, and the subsequent impact on mission operations through selected MOEs for the scenario modeled.

Book excerpt: Operational EW test and evaluation experiments require that the position of the aircraft and other moving objects on the range be known precisely as a function of time. Terminal Time-Space-Position Information (TSPI) systems involve the range platforms interacting at close distances and therefore require precise trajectory information over a restricted volume of space. Terminal TSPI systems are used for tactics evaluation and the evaluation of simulated weapons firings (e.g., captive-carry hardware-in-the-loop missile simulators). Distributed sensor TSPI systems consist of two or more measurement sensors located some distance from each other. Each sensor makes a measurement of target angle and range. Distributed sensor systems are more complex than single-point systems involving multiple hardware installations, complex mathematical computations to extract coordinate information, synchronization of multiple measurements and calibration of a number of different stations. This paper presents a novel distributed sensor TSPI architecture that provides precise positioning information of the target relative to a fixed inertial coordinate system. The architecture efficiently integrates the information from an inertial navigation system (INS), a global positioning system (GPS) and any number of distributed RF sensors which may be located onboard a captive-carry aircraft. The significance of this work is that by knowing the target's position in a fixed inertial frame of reference (derived from the integration process) an evaluation can be made as to the effectiveness of any electronic attack or off- board decoys that might have been launched during the field test scenario. The induced INS, GPS and sensor noise and the corresponding errors due to the integration process are evaluated numerically as a function of the weapon system being used.
