Download or read book Advanced Composites Structural Concepts and Materials Technologies for Primary Aircraft Structures Structural Response and Failure Analysis written by National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) and published by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform. This book was released on 2018-07-23 with total page 392 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The ISPAN Program (Interactive Stiffened Panel Analysis) is an interactive design tool that is intended to provide a means of performing simple and self contained preliminary analysis of aircraft primary structures made of composite materials. The program combines a series of modules with the finite element code DIAL as its backbone. Four ISPAN Modules were developed and are documented. These include: (1) flat stiffened panel; (2) curved stiffened panel; (3) flat tubular panel; and (4) curved geodesic panel. Users are instructed to input geometric and material properties, load information and types of analysis (linear, bifurcation buckling, or post-buckling) interactively. The program utilizing this information will generate finite element mesh and perform analysis. The output in the form of summary tables of stress or margins of safety, contour plots of loads or stress, and deflected shape plots may be generalized and used to evaluate specific design. Book Advanced Composites Structural Concepts and Materials Technologies for Primary Aircraft Structures

Download or read book Advanced Composites Structural Concepts and Materials Technologies for Primary Aircraft Structures written by National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) and published by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform. This book was released on 2018-07-17 with total page 110 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Non-linear analysis methods were adapted and incorporated in a finite element based DIAL code. These methods are necessary to evaluate the global response of a stiffened structure under combined in-plane and out-of-plane loading. These methods include the Arc Length method and target point analysis procedure. A new interface material model was implemented that can model elastic-plastic behavior of the bond adhesive. Direct application of this method is in skin/stiffener interface failure assessment. Addition of the AML (angle minus longitudinal or load) failure procedure and Hasin's failure criteria provides added capability in the failure predictions. Interactive Stiffened Panel Analysis modules were developed as interactive pre-and post-processors. Each module provides the means of performing self-initiated finite elements based analysis of primary structures such as a flat or curved stiffened panel; a corrugated flat sandwich panel; and a curved geodesic fuselage panel. This module brings finite element analysis into the design of composite structures without the requirement for the user to know much about the techniques and procedures needed to actually perform a finite element analysis from scratch. An interactive finite element code was developed to predict bolted joint strength considering material and geometrical non-linearity. The developed method conducts an ultimate strength failure analysis using a set of material degradation models. Dorris, William J. and Hairr, John W. and Huang, Jui-Tien and Ingram, J. Book Structural Failure Analysis and Prediction Methods for Aerospace Vehicles and Structures

Download or read book Structural Failure Analysis and Prediction Methods for Aerospace Vehicles and Structures written by Sook-Ying Ho and published by Bentham Science Publishers. This book was released on 2010 with total page 194 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book deals with structural failure (induced by mechanical, aerodynamic, acoustic and aero-thermal, loads, etc.) of modern aerospace vehicles, in particular high-speed aircraft, solid propellant rocket systems and hypersonic flight vehicles, where structural integrity, failure prediction and service life assessment are particularly challenging, due to the increasingly more demanding mission requirements and the use of non-traditional materials, such as non-metallic composites, in their construction. Prediction of the complex loading environment seen in high-speed operation and constitutive / fracture models which can adequately describe the non-linear behaviour exhibited by advanced alloys and composite materials are critical in analyzing the non-linear structural response of modern aerospace vehicles and structures. The state-of-the-art of the different structural integrity assessment and prediction methodologies (including non-destructive structural health monitoring techniques) used for the structural design, service life assessment and failure analysis of the different types of aerospace vehicles are presented. The chapters are written by experts from aerospace / defence research organizations and academia in the fields of solid mechanics, and structural mechanics and dynamics of aircraft, rocket and hypersonic systems. The book will serve as a useful reference document containing specialist knowledge on appropriate prediction methodologies for a given circumstance and experimental data acquired from multi-national collaborative programs.

Book Review of Aircraft Crash Structural Response Research

Download or read book Review of Aircraft Crash Structural Response Research written by Emmett A. Witmer and published by . This book was released on 1982 with total page 127 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A review of aircraft crash structural response research has been carried out by studying the literature, discussions with researchers working in that area, and visits to facilitates/personnel involved in conducting and/or monitoring aircraft crash structural response investigations. Aircraft structures consisting of conventional built-up metallic construction and those consisting of advanced composite materials were of interest. The latter type of material and construction is of particular interest since their use is expanding rapidly, and crashworthiness of such structures is of increasing importance. Some recent theoretical and experimental studies of the behavior of composite-material structures subjected to severe static, dyanmic, and/or impact conditions are noted. Such topics as crashworthiness testing of composite fuselage structures, the impact resistance of graphite and hybrid configurations, and the effects of elastomeric additives on the mechanical properties of epoxy resin and composite systems are reviewed. A reivew is made of some current and planned research to investigate experimentally the mechanical failure, postfailure, and energy-absorbing behavior of a sequence of composite-material structural elements and structural assemblages subjected to static loads or to simulated crash-impact loads.

Book Reliability of Damage Detection in Advanced Composite Aircraft Structures

Download or read book Reliability of Damage Detection in Advanced Composite Aircraft Structures written by Great Britain. Civil Aviation Authority. Safety Regulation Group and published by . This book was released on 2013-01-30 with total page 104 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Carbon fibre reinforced composite structures are being used for up to 50% of the airframe weight in modern airliner designs, including pressurised fuselage barrels and main wings. Composite materials are susceptible to damage from inadvertent impacts. The damage takes the form of surface dents often associated with subsurface delaminations of a significantly greater area than the visible dent. While staff in the aviation industry are familiar with metallic structures and how they respond to accidental impacts, pilots, maintenance staff and ground crew may be less familiar with the way in which composite materials respond to impacts, making them less able to recognise and thus detect, a damaged composite structure. This study was performed in order to establish the appearance of surface flaws arising from impact to a polymer composite aircraft structure, and then to determine the relation between detection reliability using visual inspection procedures and the size and shape of surface flaws.

Book Development of Structural Integrity Analysis Technologies for Aging Aircraft Structures Bonded Composite Patch Repair and Weight Function Methods

Download or read book Development of Structural Integrity Analysis Technologies for Aging Aircraft Structures Bonded Composite Patch Repair and Weight Function Methods written by K. Boyd and published by . This book was released on 1997 with total page 142 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this research was to develop advanced structural integrity analysis methods for aging aircraft structures. The primary focus of this study was to develop a method for performing fatigue crack growth analyses under a composite (repair patch) on a metallic structure. Also, it was envisioned that these methods would be incorporated into the fatigue crack growth software, AFGROW, so that this promising technology can be transitioned to U.S. Air Force Logistic Centers, U.S. Air Force contractors and other government agencies as quickly as possible. Fatigue cracks growing from fastener holes, or multiple fastener holes, also are common problems found in aging aircraft. To address these problems, analytical methods (weight functions) were developed to assist engineers in the analysis of fatigue cracks growing in arbitrary stress fields, commonly found around cold-worked fastener holes and stop-drilled cracks. Furthermore, an approach to evaluate multiple cracking, or multiple-site damage (MSD), was developed as a future enhancement to the AFGROW program.

Book Riveted Lap Joints in Aircraft Fuselage

Download or read book Riveted Lap Joints in Aircraft Fuselage written by Andrzej Skorupa and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-06-23 with total page 346 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fatigue of the pressurized fuselages of transport aircraft is a significant problem all builders and users of aircraft have to cope with for reasons associated with assuring a sufficient lifetime and safety, and formulating adequate inspection procedures. These aspects are all addressed in various formal protocols for creating and maintaining airworthiness, including damage tolerance considerations. In most transport aircraft, fatigue occurs in lap joints, sometimes leading to circumstances that threaten safety in critical ways. The problem of fatigue of lap joints has been considerably enlarged by the goal of extending aircraft lifetimes. Fatigue of riveted lap joints between aluminium alloy sheets, typical of the pressurized aircraft fuselage, is the major topic of the present book. The richly illustrated and well-structured chapters treat subjects such as: structural design solutions and loading conditions for fuselage skin joints; relevance of laboratory test results for simple lap joint specimens to riveted joints in a real structure; effect of various production and design related variables on the riveted joint fatigue behaviour; analytical and experimental results on load transmission in mechanically fastened lap joints; theoretical and experimental analysis of secondary bending and its implications for riveted joint fatigue performance; nucleation and shape development of fatigue cracks in riveted longitudinal lap joints; overview of experimental investigations into the multi-site damage for full scale fuselage panels and riveted lap joint specimens; fatigue crack growth and fatigue life prediction methodology for riveted lap joints; residual strength predictions for riveted lap joints in a fuselage structure. The major issues of each chapter are recapitulated in the last section.
