Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A smart, snappy, and comprehensive guide for the millions of adults who are thinking about going—or going back—to college and want to know how to do it right As anyone who has done it knows, going back to school is a major undertaking. For younger and older adults alike, starting or returning to school presents different challenges than those encountered by teens fresh out of high school and heading straight to college. Countless Americans take on this task while working, raising kids, caring for parents, volunteering, serving in the military—and in some cases all of the above. Although the "non-traditional" undergraduate student is in fact the new normal, the glut of college guides out there don't include practical advice for the busy moms, frustrated employees, and ambitious adults who are applying to college or hoping to finish earning a degree. Never Too Late will help readers jump-start a new professional path or speed down the one they're already on by guiding them through vital questions: What should I study? How can I afford the time and money required to get a college degree? How do I compare schools? With key chapters on flexibility ("It's About Time!" and "Face-to-Face or Cyberspace?") and rankings of the best colleges for grown-ups diving back into the books, Never Too Late is an essential reference for adults seeking a richer life—and a meaningful place in our rapidly changing economy and world.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cut through the noise and make better college and career choices This book is about addressing the college-choosing problem. The rankings, metrics, analytics, college visits, and advice that we use today to help us make these decisions are out of step with the progress individual students are trying to make. They don't give students and families the information and context they need to make such a high-stakes decision about whether and where to get an education. Choosing College strips away the noise to help you understand why you’re going to school. What's driving you? What are you trying to accomplish? Once you know why, the book will help you make better choices. The research in this book illustrates that choosing a school is complicated. By constructing more than 200 mini-documentaries of how students chose different postsecondary educational experiences, the authors explore the motivations for how and why people make the decisions that they do at a much deeper, causal level. By the end, you’ll know why you’re going and what you’re really chasing. The book: Identifies the five different Jobs for which students hire postsecondary education Allows you to see your true options for what’s next Offers guidance for how to successfully choose your pathway Illuminates how colleges and entrepreneurs can build better experiences for each Job The authors help readers understand not what job students want out of college, but what "Job" students are hiring college to do for them.

Book Adult College Completion in the 21st Century

Download or read book Adult College Completion in the 21st Century written by Wendy Erisman and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 69 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While interest in adult college completion is at an all-time high, colleges and universities must change their policies and practices to better serve students who return to college as adults. The report discusses how interest in adult college completion has increased across the higher education community. At the same time, significant obstacles remain for the 30 to 35 million American adults who have enrolled in college but never completed a degree or certificate. While not insurmountable, those challenges could have far-reaching impacts if left unaddressed. The report's authors suggest that too many returning adult students get lost in a bureaucratic maze and find themselves unable to re-enroll in college and/or complete a degree. Using data from a range of sources, the report explores the challenges adult students face when returning to college and identifies effective practices for supporting these students when they do return to school. The report also examines the role of local, state, and national partnerships that bring together higher education and workforce entities to engage this prospective student population, recognizing the importance of employment and career advancement to many returning adult students. The report identifies important changes in higher education policy and practice that would benefit returning adult students, including:• Access to advisors capable of addressing adult students' complex needs• Student services available during non-traditional business hours or online• Additional sources of financial aid, particularly at the state level• A more transparent process to help students understand, prior to enrolling, whether their existing credits will transfer• Flexible course scheduling, online courses, and innovative degree-completion programs• Access to opportunities to earn credit for prior learning.

Book Adults Returning to College

Download or read book Adults Returning to College written by Shirley A. Roddy and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There has been an increase in the past few years of working adults returning to college to complete their baccalaureate degree in a non-traditional format. Because the cost, in both time and resources, is significant, it seemed prudent to study the outcomes of these adult students. The purpose of this study was to determine adult student expectations in relation to educational outcomes and benefits experienced. Research on the traditional-age college student suggests that extending one's education beyond high school by attending college and obtaining a bachelor's degree is beneficial to both the individual and to society. However, because of the paucity of research specific to the adult segment of the college population, it was not known if the same was true for the adult population. It is for this reason that a grounded theory approach was taken.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first practical guide of its kind that helps students transition smoothly from high school to college The transition from high school—and home—to college can be stressful. Students and parents often arrive on campus unprepared for what college is really like. Academic standards and expectations are different from high school; families aren’t present to serve as “scaffolding” for students; and first-years have to do what they call “adulting.” Nothing in the college admissions process prepares students for these new realities. As a result, first-year college students report higher stress, more mental health issues, and lower completion rates than in the past. In fact, up to one third of first-year college students will not return for their second year—and colleges are reporting an increase in underprepared first-year students. How to College is here to help. Professors Andrea Malkin Brenner and Lara Schwartz guide first-year students and their families through the transition process, during the summer after high school graduation and throughout the school year, preparing students to succeed and thrive as they transition and adapt to college. The book draws on the authors’ experience teaching, writing curricula, and designing programs for thousands of first-year college students over decades.
