Book Adult Attachment as a Mediator moderator to Early Experiences of Family Violence Victimization on Adult Physically Violent Behavior

Download or read book Adult Attachment as a Mediator moderator to Early Experiences of Family Violence Victimization on Adult Physically Violent Behavior written by Alison J. Marganski and published by . This book was released on 2010 with total page 176 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The detrimental effects of family violence victimization are well documented in research. Of particular note is its relationship to violent offending. Much evidence exists that link early experiences of family violence victimization to later violent behavior. Most often, researchers attribute this "cycle of violence" to social learning, whereby youth view and learn specific behaviors in response to conflict and then use them as adults. Yet this theory alone fails to explain why some individuals who experience family violence do not go on to offend later in life while others do. Attachment theory suggests that attachment forms early in life and is relatively stable over time and relationships. Individuals who experience family violence are more likely to have disrupted attachments that relate to later relationship problems. However, there is limited research investigating the role of attachment in influencing adult violence. This study takes a multidimensional approach by investigating whether several types of childhood experiences of family violence relate to adult violence via adult attachment, including attachment to a best friend, an intimate, a parent, and a sibling. Using a convenience sample of undergraduate university students, data was collected from 372 respondents through self-administered questionnaires during the fall semester of 2009. Two different sets of multivariate analyses were used to estimate whether adult attachment types play a role in explaining adult violence: (1) nested models to analyze the independent effect of each adult attachment type on the relationship between family violence and adult violent behavior, and (2) models using main effects and interactions between family violence-adult attachment types on adult violent behavior. Consistent with past research, the results of the analyses revealed significant associations between direct experiences of family violence victimization and adult violent behavior that provided support for social learning theory. Multivariate analyses using interaction terms also found significant interactions, indicating moderation effects, which were further investigated. Given the current study's findings on the role of adult attachment in interacting with experiences of family violence and its relation to adult violent behavior, further research to examine the means by which family violence victimization experiences develop into violent behavioral patterns is recommended.

Book A Dyadic Examination of Intimate Partner Violence Using Bowen Family Systems Theory and Adult Romantic Attachment Theory

Download or read book A Dyadic Examination of Intimate Partner Violence Using Bowen Family Systems Theory and Adult Romantic Attachment Theory written by Heather Anne Katafiasz and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page 64 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Abstract: The purpose of the study was to advance the understanding of Intimate Partner Violence (IPV) by examining the overlap of Adult Attachment Theory and Bowen Family Systems Theory in a clinical sample of couples. This study utilized dyadic data analyses to examine how attachment styles and differentiation levels, measured in this study as separateness scores and connectedness scores, overlap in couples and then how a history of violence affected the relationship between attachment styles and differentiation levels. Few significant results were found, possibly due to the small sample for dyadic data analysis. This study found that while the majority of both male and female participants identified with the secure attachment style, high proportions of male participants ascribed to the dismissing attachment style, while high proportions of female participants ascribed to the fearful attachment style. Furthermore, participants who ascribed to the dismissing or fearful attachment styles were most commonly paired with a partner who ascribed to the secure attachment style. Results of separateness and connectedness showed that the means for separateness scores were lower than the means for connectedness scores, regardless of gender. Partial support for the hypothesize were found, which are discussed. A history of violence also had a substantial association with feelings of closeness and distance in a relationship, in that the scores for almost every variable and every relationship varied with the presence of a history of physical violence as compared to the absence of a history of physical violence. Significant main effects were found for violence on female separateness, male separateness, and female connectedness, as well as significant interaction effects of violence and female attachment. Furthermore, separateness was consistently higher and connectedness was consistently lower when violence was reported than when it was not reported. Clinical implications, limitations, and future directions will be discussed.

Book The Role of Adult Attachment Style in Violence Against Women

Download or read book The Role of Adult Attachment Style in Violence Against Women written by Kristi Louise Medcalf Breen and published by . This book was released on 1997 with total page 126 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Most violence against women occurs in the context of intimate relationships (Henton, Cate, Koval, Lloyd, & Christopher, 1983). Adult attachment style has been found useful in understanding intimate relationships (Hazan & Shaver, 1987; Collins, 1996). The present study examines whether men who are violent against women have different adult attachment styles then men who are not violent against women. The participants were 176 men with a mean age of 33 who were participants in a longitudinal study of sexual aggression (Malamuth, Linz, Heavey, Barnes & Acker, 1995). The prevalence of violence in the sample was high: 74% admitted to at least one aggressive act; 55% of the violent men reported using at least 4 of the 14 sexually and physically aggressive behaviors studied. Adult attachment style was unrelated to physical violence, sexual violence, and the combination, both physical and sexual violence against women. Four possible explanations were discussed: the high base rate of violence in the sample, problems in the measurement of adult attachment style, the failure of the design of the study to capture the complexity of the relationship between adult attachment style and violence against women, and the possibility that the original hypothesis was wrong. Several directions for additional research were described.

Book Linking Child Maltreatment to Adult Couples Adjustment

Download or read book Linking Child Maltreatment to Adult Couples Adjustment written by Monica R. Correale and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 178 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Experiencing maltreatment as a child is associated with emotion dysregulation, internalizing and externalizing psychopathology, insecure attachment style, and impaired social relationships in adulthood. Despite having a higher incidence of chaotic and violent relationships in adulthood, adult survivors of childhood maltreatment may benefit from positive attachment experiences with supportive partners, allowing for better mental health outcomes. Previous research has suggested that both partners' attachment style predict their partners' reported relationship satisfaction, which may then predict both mental health and relationship outcomes such as psychological distress and future termination of the relationship. However, despite the importance of considering romantic relationships as potential corrective attachment experiences, research exploring childhood experiences of maltreatment and mental health symptoms in romantic couples is limited. The majority of studies on maltreatment, mental health symptoms, relationship quality, and attachment style have often failed to include both members of romantic couples. Additionally, previous work has primarily examined these processes in relatively low-risk, heterosexual couples.

Book Summary of Attached

Book excerpt: Summary of Attached - The New Science of Adult Attachment and How It Can Help You Find—and Keep—Love - A Comprehensive Summary The New Science of Adult Attachment 1. Decoding Relationship Behavior While working in Columbia University’s Therapeutic Nursery helping mothers bond more closely with their children, Amir Levine, M.D. made an astounding discovery: the bonds adults have with their adult romantic partners mirrors the attachment bonds babies have with their mothers. This meant that attachment theory, which describes how babies and children display attachment to their mothers, is not just for children. Attachment theory continues to explain behavior toward others into adulthood. Attachment theory describes three “attachment styles” that explain how children respond to bonding with their mothers and (in adults) how people respond to closeness and bonding in romantic relationships. These three categories are: ● Anxious ● Avoidant ● Secure Those in each of these three categories differ in how they view intimacy, conflict, sex, communication, and relationship expectations. Everyone’s relationship behavior can be explained by each of these categories, which means we are all programmed with these three styles, with 50 percent of the population being secure, 20... Book Role of Adult Attachment in the Intergenerational Transmission of Violence Mediator Moderator Or Independent Predictor

Download or read book Role of Adult Attachment in the Intergenerational Transmission of Violence Mediator Moderator Or Independent Predictor written by and published by . This book was released on 2002 with total page 65 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The present study examined the role of adult attachment in the intergenerational transmission of violence. We assessed the effects of exposure to several forms of childhood violence (child physical abuse [CPA], child sexual abuse [CSA], domestic violence [DV]) on adult CPA risk and examined whether adult attachment serves as a mediator or moderator of these relationships, or as an independent predictor of CPA risk. During their first week of basic training, U.S. Navy recruits (N=11,195) completed a package of questionnaires assessing childhood violence, adult attachment, and adult CPA risk. Childhood violence (especially parental CPA and DV) and adult attachment (especially the self-attitude dimension) were both predictive of increased adult CPA risk. Effects of childhood violence on CPA risk were partially but not entirely mediated by adult attachment. In contrast, there was no evidence that adult attachment or demographic factors moderated the relationship between childhood violence and adult CPA risk.

Book excerpt: One of the most debated constituents of intimate partner violence pertains to attachment theory. Although, attachment theory can provide a theoretical framework for understanding the linkage between childhood family experiences and subsequent experiences with partner violence, there are controversial perspectives as to whether attachment style is stable from childhood to adulthood (Bowlby, 1973, 1980, 1982) or if attachment style can be formulated directly from adult abusive relationships (Caspi & Elder, 1988; Ricks, 1985). Therefore, the purpose of this research was to explore how attachment style presents in the Battered Woman Syndrome, determine if the battered woman's attachment style is consistent throughout childhood to adulthood or if it is manifested due to intimate partner violence exposure as well as to determine how attachment style is manifested in interpersonal functioning and perceived power and control. The theory of learned helplessness (Seligman, 1975) was used as a conceptual model for understanding why battered women remain in abusive relationships. There were 137 female sample participants who reported a history of domestic violence. Measures administered included the Battered Woman Syndrome Questionnaire (BWSQ, Walker, 1978) that assessed childhood history, interpersonal functioning and power and control and the Revised Adult Attachment Scale (Collins and Read, 1996) that assessed the participant's attachment style. Statistical techniques employed included latent class analysis, one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) and logistic regression. Results indicated that aversive childhood environment (as measured primarily by childhood battering variables) and involvement in adulthood abusive relationships were significantly related to childhood environment and involvement in adulthood abusive relationships. Across all five adulthood battering episodes there were significant overall effects of attachment style on sexual abuse scores. Results also confirmed the hypotheses that insecurely attached participants were more likely to report more interpersonal functioning difficulties and lower perceived power and control when compared to secure participants. Implications for future research are also presented.

Book The Relationship of Romantic Attachment to Intimate Partner Violence Victimization and Perpetration

Download or read book The Relationship of Romantic Attachment to Intimate Partner Violence Victimization and Perpetration written by Chauntel Wiggins and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 338 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Intimate Partner Violence (IPV) is common among college students and university counseling centers require strategies for addressing this health problem (Amar & Gennaro, 2005; Gover, Kaukinin, & Fox, 2004; Murray & Kardatzke, 2007). Attachment theory may provide strong theoretical and empirical grounding for guiding IPV prevention and intervention efforts (Magdol et al., 1998; Schwartz et al., 2006; Scott, Wolfe, & Wekerle, 2003). The present study evaluated a variety of social and emotional risk factors as potential mediators and moderators of the relation between attachment relevant variables and IPV victimization and perpetration in a college sample. None of the primary hypotheses were fully supported; however, women who reported IPV histories exhibited higher levels of anxious romantic attachment than women without IPV histories. Further, partner delinquency moderated the relation between problems with anger modulation and IPV. Sex differences were examined for study variables and women were more likely than men to experience both IPV victimization and perpetration. These results are compared to prior empirical findings and implications for potential prevention and intervention strategies with college students are identified. Methodological considerations that may influence the interpretation of study data are also presented and discussed.
