Book ADST Multi Service Distributed Training Testbed MDT2 Lessons Learned

Download or read book ADST Multi Service Distributed Training Testbed MDT2 Lessons Learned written by Ellaine Colburn and published by . This book was released on 1994 with total page 40 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: MDT2 Lessons Learned Final Report on the Close Air Support exercises completed over a long-haul classified network. The Battlefield Distributed Simulation - Developmental (BDS-D) simulation program has demonstrated that man- in-the-loop distributed interactive simulation systems, including an active, intelligent opposing force, can explore the validity of planned hardware configurations as well as the concepts for employment, doctrine, and tactics. The objective of the Multi-service Distributed Training Testbed (MDT2) Training Exercise was to demonstrate the capability to conduct meaningful multi-service, combat mission training using Distributed Interactive Simulation (DIS) technologies and synthetic battlefields. The focus for this training demonstration was close air support (CAS). The Multi-Service Distributed Training Testbed linked simulations and simulators of all four Services classified at a SECRET/NOFORN level. Airframe crew simulators of Air Force pilots at Armstrong Labs, Mesa, AZ (formerly Williams AFB, AZ), and Marine and Navy pilots at Systems Engineering Test Directorate, Patuxent River, MD, emulated attack and forward air control aircraft. They supported the conduct of ground force operations by Army elements in Advanced Distributed Simulation vehicles and Tactical Operations Center (TOC) at the Mounted Warfare Test Bed (MWTB), Fort Knox, KY. Additionally, a Marine Deployable Forward Observer (DFO)- MULE (ground laser designator) team participated from NRaD-San Diego, CA, using their target identification simulators. The key to the demonstration were the performance measurement and feedback systems used for the CAS training.

Book Assessment of User Reactions to the Multi service Distributed Training Testbed MDT2 System

Download or read book Assessment of User Reactions to the Multi service Distributed Training Testbed MDT2 System written by Angelo Mirabella and published by . This book was released on 1997 with total page 112 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This research was part of a larger program to develop a methodology for multi-Service training of Close Air Support (CAS), using Distributed Interactive Simulation (DIS) technology. This paper summarizes all assessment of user reactions to the training. Survey questionnaires. group interviews, and observations of the training were used to obtain data on to questions. What value is added to existing Service training cycles by the DIS methodology developed? How well did the training work? A key finding was that the distributed methodology fills a critical gap in training multi-Service CAS coordination tasks. An important potential application of the research is to 'ramp-up' training in preparation for rotations to combat training centers. Many lessons were learned about how to develop and apply survey and interview instruments as part of a larger evaluation of DIS training. For example, we 'discovered' that for multiple sites and services 'one size does not fit all.' Assessment instruments must be carefully prepared in different versions to suit the varying perspectives and roles of multiple services."--DTIC.

Book The Cost and Effectiveness of the Multi Service Distributed Training Testbed MDT2 for Training Close Air Support

Download or read book The Cost and Effectiveness of the Multi Service Distributed Training Testbed MDT2 for Training Close Air Support written by and published by . This book was released on 1997 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Multi-Service Distributed Training Testbed (MDT2) is a network of eight Army, Marine Corps, and Air Force simulators (tanks, aircraft, target designator, and tactical operations center) in different locations that can operate together as if all were engaging an enemy at the same location. All are involved in the mission of close air support. Two sets of exercises were conducted, each lasting 5 days. The results show that performance improved, as shown by measures of battle damage, synchronization of forces, and adherence to coordination procedures. Several comparisons of the costs of conducting training for close air support using this type of simulation or participation in field exercises favors simulation by a factor of ten. The findings provide strong evidence for the utility of distributed interactive simulation as a way to provide multi-Service training.

Book Advanced Distributed Simulation and the Fog of simulation Lessons Learned from the Cockpit

Download or read book Advanced Distributed Simulation and the Fog of simulation Lessons Learned from the Cockpit written by Herbert H. Bell and published by . This book was released on 1997 with total page 6 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Armstrong Laboratory Aircrew Training Research Division(AL/HRA) has participated in a number of Advanced Distrubuted Simulation (ADS) exercises. These exercises included Warbreaker, the Synthetic Theater of War-Europe(STOW-E), Multi-Service Distributed Training Testbed(MDT2), and Warfighter 95. Each of these exercises successfully linked large numbers of simulators and enhanced the technical capabilities of ADS. These exercises also suggested that ADS offers unique training opportunities for warriors, battle staffs, and commanders. Unfortunately, these training opportunities were not demonstrated to the same degree as the technology. We believe part of the reason for the failure to fully demonstrate the training potential of ADS stems from problems in adequately defining requirements, appropriately scoping exercises, thoroughly testing simulations, and maintaining real-time exercise control. This paper describes the typical problems we encountered as a node providing virtual simulations of tactical aircraft in support of larger ADS exercises while at the same time trying to provide combat mission training for the pilots flying those simulators. In addition, this paper provides recommendations that we believe will enhance the training value of ADS exercises for participants in simulated weapons systems.

Book excerpt: The U.S. Navy is ready to execute the Nation's tasks at sea, from prompt and sustained combat operations to every-day forward-presence, diplomacy and relief efforts. We operate worldwide, in space, cyberspace, and throughout the maritime domain. The United States is and will remain a maritime nation, and our security and prosperity are inextricably linked to our ability to operate naval forces on, under and above the seas and oceans of the world. To that end, the Navy executes programs that enable our Sailors, Marines, civilians, and forces to meet existing and emerging challenges at sea with confidence. Six priorities guide today's planning, programming, and budgeting decisions: (1) maintain a credible, modern, and survivable sea based strategic deterrent; (2) sustain forward presence, distributed globally in places that matter; (3) develop the capability and capacity to win decisively; (4) focus on critical afloat and ashore readiness to ensure the Navy is adequately funded and ready; (5) enhance the Navy's asymmetric capabilities in the physical domains as well as in cyberspace and the electromagnetic spectrum; and (6) sustain a relevant industrial base, particularly in shipbuilding.
