The Battlefield Distributed Simulation - Developmental (BDS-D) simulation program has demonstrated that man- in-the-loop distributed interactive simulation systems, including an active, intelligent opposing force, can explore the validity of planned hardware configurations as well as the concepts for employment, doctrine, and tactics. The objective of the Multi-service Distributed Training Testbed (MDT2) Training Exercise was to demonstrate the capability to conduct meaningful multi-service, combat mission training using Distributed Interactive Simulation (DIS) technologies and synthetic battlefields. The focus for this training demonstration was close air support (CAS). The Multi-Service Distributed Training Testbed linked simulations and simulators of all four Services classified at a SECRET/NOFORN level. Airframe crew simulators of Air Force pilots at Armstrong Labs, Mesa, AZ (formerly Williams AFB, AZ), and Marine and Navy pilots at Systems Engineering Test Directorate, Patuxent River, MD, emulated attack and forward air control aircraft. They supported the conduct of ground force operations by Army elements in Advanced Distributed Simulation vehicles and Tactical Operations Center (TOC) at the Mounted Warfare Test Bed (MWTB), Fort Knox, KY. Additionally, a Marine Deployable Forward Observer (DFO)- MULE (ground laser designator) team participated from NRaD-San Diego, CA, using their target identification simulators. The key to the demonstration were the performance measurement and feedback systems used for the CAS training.

Book excerpt: The Multi-Service Distributed Training Testbed (MDT2) is a network of eight Army, Marine Corps, and Air Force simulators (tanks, aircraft, target designator, and tactical operations center) in different locations that can operate together as if all were engaging an enemy at the same location. All are involved in the mission of close air support. Two sets of exercises were conducted, each lasting 5 days. The results show that performance improved, as shown by measures of battle damage, synchronization of forces, and adherence to coordination procedures. Several comparisons of the costs of conducting training for close air support using this type of simulation or participation in field exercises favors simulation by a factor of ten. The findings provide strong evidence for the utility of distributed interactive simulation as a way to provide multi-Service training.

This report combines the knowledge from MDT2-CAS with the authors' knowledge of training into recommendations about how to train best with DIS technology.

This site activation effort was for the Fort Leonard Wood, MO, MSTB facility. The technical period of performance was from March 27, 1997 to September 30, 1997. The effort was performed as DO #0039 under the Lockheed Martin Advanced Distributed Simulation Technology II (ADST II) Contract administered by the U.S. Army Simulation, Training, and Instrumentation Command (STRICOM). This Final Report includes a description of the effort, its conditions and conduct, and lessons learned. This report addresses the systems capabilities, the associated applications on the systems, and the integration of Government Furnished software models.

Book excerpt: The Armstrong Laboratory Aircrew Training Research Division(AL/HRA) has participated in a number of Advanced Distrubuted Simulation (ADS) exercises. These exercises included Warbreaker, the Synthetic Theater of War-Europe(STOW-E), Multi-Service Distributed Training Testbed(MDT2), and Warfighter 95. Each of these exercises successfully linked large numbers of simulators and enhanced the technical capabilities of ADS. These exercises also suggested that ADS offers unique training opportunities for warriors, battle staffs, and commanders. Unfortunately, these training opportunities were not demonstrated to the same degree as the technology. We believe part of the reason for the failure to fully demonstrate the training potential of ADS stems from problems in adequately defining requirements, appropriately scoping exercises, thoroughly testing simulations, and maintaining real-time exercise control. This paper describes the typical problems we encountered as a node providing virtual simulations of tactical aircraft in support of larger ADS exercises while at the same time trying to provide combat mission training for the pilots flying those simulators. In addition, this paper provides recommendations that we believe will enhance the training value of ADS exercises for participants in simulated weapons systems.
