Book excerpt: The goal of this research was to gain a fundamental understanding of adsorptive-adsorbent interactions and apply the information obtained to the rational design of new adsorbents tailored to specific adsorptives of interest, i. e., chemical warfare agents. To this end, a multiple equilibrium analysis model (MEA) has been developed and was used to interpret adsorption isotherms and show that the derived parameters are meaningful within the context of the model. Adsorptives were selected that vary in size, polarizability, polarity, acidity, and basicity to permit adsorbent characterization in terms of these physical properties. The equilibrium constants (K(i)'s), capacities (n(i)'s), and enthalpies obtained from the analysis of the varied adsorptives were then used to directly compare carbons, silicas, aluminas, amorphous silica-aluminas, and zeolites as adsorbent materials. The research has led to an increased understanding of the interactions between solids adsorbents and substrates in gas adsorption and catalysis.

Yet in order to successfully promote the use of biodegradable pesticides, one must fully understand the mechanism of degradation, and it is to this vital subject that we address ourselves in the present volume. According to the Biodegradation Task Force, Safety of Chemicals Com mittee, Brussels (1978), biodegradation may be defined as the molecular degradation of an organic substance resulting from the complex action of living organisms. A substance is said to be biodegraded to an environmentally acceptable extent when environmentally undesirable properties are lost. Loss of some characteristic function or property of substance by biodegradation may be referred to as biological transformation.

The war began in August 1990, and the last US ground troops returned home by June 1991. Although most Gulf War veterans resumed their normal activities, many soon began reporting a variety of nonexplained health problems that they attributed to their participation in the Gulf War, including chronic fatigue, muscle and joint pain, loss of concentration, forgetfulness, headache, and rash. Because of concerns about the veterans' health problems, the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) requested that the Institute of Medicine (IOM) review the scientific and medical literature on the long-term adverse health effects of agents to which the Gulf War veterans may have been exposed. This report is a broad overview of the toxicology of sarin and cyclosarin. It assesses the biologic plausibility with respect to the compounds in question and health effects.
