Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to examine the use of gender choirs within a middle school choral classroom to investigate (a) attitudes about singing, (b) confidence and self-efficacy of their own voices, and (c) peer perceptions of adolescent males’ participation in choir. Data were obtained from 40 students, in Grades 7 or 8, who were enrolled in a male gender choir at one of the five participating middle schools. Most participants enrolled in choir because they thought choir was fun, and they were good singers. Most participants did not think that choir was “better” when the genders were separated. It was difficult to determine the “why” behind the results. The results indicated the complex nature of gender choirs and adolescence. Based on the results, the researcher concluded that there is a need for a deeper understanding of male identity in the male adolescent as well as the male adolescent perspective of gender choirs.

A secondary purpose of this study was to examine these self-views specifically in the context of a choral hierarchy. Using a researcher-designed survey instrument, I gathered data from middle- and high-school students currently enrolled in a choir program organized in a hierarchical structure. I analyzed descriptive statistics of survey responses to items designed to measure implicit theories of singing ability, singing self-concept, and goal orientation. I also examined differences among participants by ensemble placement in implicit theory and self-concept scores, correlation between implicit theory and self-concept, and whether implicit theory, self-concept, goal orientation, or current enrollment could predict future enrollment decisions. In addition to these quantitative measures, I coded open-ended responses to two failure scenarios and examined participant responses by ensemble and gender. Both implicit theory and self-concept scores were higher for participants at the top of the choral hierarchy than at the bottom. Open-ended responses, however, did not align with the implicit theory scale and a number of students presented a false growth mindset. Open-ended responses also indicated that failure scenarios were likely to result in an altered view of the self and shame in placement in an ensemble at the bottom of the choral hierarchy. The means scores for participants in the middle- and high-school ensembles in both implicit theory and self-concept were significantly different, with participants in the high-school ensembles having higher scores in both constructs. Implicit theory and self-concept were significantly related, and self-concept, goal orientation, and current enrollment significantly predicted future enrollment decisions.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this research was to identify factors contributing to the development of vocal self-concept in adolescent females who are experiencing vocal expansion, previously called vocal mutation. The central question for this study was: What are the factors contributing to the development of musical self-concept in adolescent females experiencing vocal expansion? The guiding questions sought to find the rehearsal practices, rehearsal experiences, and outside influences that have an effect, either positive or negative, on vocal self-concept (VSC). Case study method was used so that information to answer these questions could come directly from individuals whose VSCs were currently developing. Four adolescent females experiencing vocal expansion served as participants for this study. All four females participated in the chorus of a racially diverse middle class suburban middle school. Data were the statements from the participants, statements from the choral director, and observations of the researcher. Each participant was a bounded case. The researcher coded the data, analyzed each case according to the research questions, and performed cross case analysis to derive meanings from the data. Fourteen themes emerged from the analysis. Participants stated that the following affected their vocal self concept: vocal technique instruction, education about vocal expansion, confidence, the disposition of the teacher, sight singing instruction, hard work, experiencing vocal expansion, and comments from others. The voice part to which they are assigned and literature choice only affected their vocal self concept as it applied to keeping them in a range in which they could sing. The following experiences did not affect the VSC of these participants: the inclusion of non-singing state standards, changes in instruction, the attitudes of others toward rehearsal, and the attitudes of others outside of chorus. Two rehearsal practices that affected VSC relate directly to vocal expansion, vocal technique instruction and education about vocal expansion. Vocal technique instruction, breath management and vocal focus, was the only rehearsal practice that improved vocal expansion characteristics. Education about vocal expansion and the characteristics also raised VSC. These females needed to know that vocal disturbances they were experiencing were normal and most importantly would go away with growth and development..

Book excerpt: Within the world of music education, adolescent singing participation is fiercely debated and widely acknowledged as a problematic area. Writers have shown considerable interest in exploring this field, but much of the resulting scholarly activity has been narrow in its scope or has resulted in unclear findings. Despite the lack of unambiguous information about adolescents' engagement in singing activities, both at and beyond school, the last decade has seen a significant increase in the publication of government initiatives and policies aimed at effecting change in this very area. This tendency was evident throughout the New Labour administration and has continued under the current Tory-Liberal alliance. This research contributes to the existing literature using both quantitative and qualitative methods. The first part uses a large-scale social survey to establish a reliable evidence base for the rates of participation in singing activities amongst a sample of male and female adolescents (n = 1,770). In the second part, qualitative group interviews with a much smaller sample (n = 50) are employed to interrogate the factors underlying the patterns of participation that emerge from the results of the social survey. I conclude that, across a range of contexts, overall rates of participation in singing activities are low, thus confirming the anecdotal suspicions of many practitioners and writers but challenging the predominant discourse amongst both policy makers and the media, which has implied far greater rates of participation than I was able to observe. These low levels of engagement lead me to the conclusion that pupils are being unfairly denied access to the singing activities that are mandated in the current National Curriculum document. Statistically significant differences between boys' and girls' experiences of singing are found at every stage of the quantitative analysis, and gendered discourses are highly prevalent amongst the themes coming forward from the qualitative group interviews. I suggest that music educators are insufficiently mindful of the need to present equal opportunities where singing is concerned, and that, at present, they inadequately challenge beliefs and practices which emphasise the 'femaleness' of singing, to the detriment of boys' involvement. I recommend a number of ways in which practice could be changed in order to facilitate greater involvement in singing amongst both boys and girls. Foremost amongst these is the need to address adolescents' feeling that they are inadequately prepared - technically and socially - for singing. I also suggest that music educators should be more active in addressing unhelpful myths around singing participation such as those concerning the different abilities of girls and boys.

This relationship is first explored through a content analysis of sexual content of popular music lyrics. The findings generally support those of previous content analyses that find sexual content to be increasing, to be used regardless of gender of singer, and to be higher among some genres than others. The study also offers unexpected evidence of a link between lyrical content and cultural happenings that was not formally sought as part of the original study. The study secondly seeks to discover any correlations between sexual content of lyrics and national social indicators of adolescent sexual behavior. Few findings of significance emerged, and future research may wish to examine why expected negative media effects do not reveal themselves at the national level.

Book excerpt: Stereotypical peer beliefs and expectations about gender identity, gender role and gender-role conformity can limit participation in school activities, and reduce performance potential. The first of three linked studies for this book investigated whether gender stereotype threat caused performance decrement for adolescent males in choirs (a domain often considered inappropriate for males), and whether salience of stereotype threat could affect awareness of it. The findings of a second study revealed common attributes which enabled adolescent male choristers to remain engaged in choral music but did not protect them from the effects of stereotype threat. The third study revealed perceptions of gender held by non-targets of stereotype threat as well as by the targets, and explored how these perceptions were related to a wider array of school-based adolescent activities. The findings prepare the way to challenge deep-seated beliefs which lead to gender stereotyping and prejudice, by exploring the interface between beliefs and expectations about gender identity and attitudes towards gender role and gender-role conformity within different school cultures.
