Book Predictors of Student Outcome in a Baccalaureate Nursing Program

Download or read book Predictors of Student Outcome in a Baccalaureate Nursing Program written by Paula H. Bryant and published by . This book was released on 2017 with total page 168 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Student success in a nursing program is a complex process that involves the interaction of student attributes, academic, psychological, social, and environmental factors. Using the Jeffreys's (2015) Nursing Undergraduate Retention and Success (NURS) Model, the purpose of this research was to determine the individual student profile characteristics, academic characteristics, and personal attributes and attitudes that predict outcome in a baccalaureate nursing program. Three hundred sixty-three records of students admitted to a baccalaureate nursing program at a small, public university in southwest Georgia from May 2009-August 2014 were reviewed. Binomial logistic regression analysis was utilized to determine if three categories of independent variables: (a) student profile factors, (b) self-reported attitudes and attributes, and (c) academic factors could predict student outcome in the nursing program. Research results from this study found that student profile factors, specifically age, sex, program designation, and socioeconomic status were not predictive of outcome. Further, results found that academic factors, grade point average, and TEAS test scores were highly predictive of student outcome. Lastly, the research found that higher scores in self-reported critical thinking ability and learning style preference were predictive of a favorable student outcome. Of importance to nursing education is how these results can be utilized for review and revision of admission, and progression policies. The use of GPA and standardized test scores is a common practice for admission committees and will likely continue to be a significant factor in admissions decisions. Further research is needed as to how other factors that affect student outcomes, attrition or completion could be used to guide admission decisions.

Book Admission Variables as a Predictor of First Semester Student Success

Download or read book Admission Variables as a Predictor of First Semester Student Success written by Linda Lisa Esper and published by . This book was released on 2009 with total page 172 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The current national shortage of practicing registered nurses is exacerbated by an accompanying shortage of nurse educators, which limits program enrollments in Associate Degree Nursing (ADN) programs. Relatively low available enrollment in nursing programs is coupled with a national first year retention rate of 64% (National League for Nursing Accrediting Commission [NLNAC], 2008), which leaves ADN educational leaders struggling to find improved ways to increase graduation rates through better identification of qualified applicants. This exploratory, action research study examined commonly used ADN admission criteria in order to identify those indicators which best predict students' first semester success at a small private northeastern United States college. The predictive ability of common ADN admission variables (TEAS scores in the areas of math, science, and English; overall TEAS score; age; gender; and math, science, and English course grades) was determined with regard to student success outcome variables (medication/math exam grade, Nurse Fundamental course grade, Nurse Health Assessment course grade, and Assessment Technology Institute [ATI] Nursing I Fundamental Content Mastery Series scores). Using an exploratory, action research design, data from 120 freshman nursing students were examined to assess the relative contributions of each of the predictor variables on forecasting students' first semester success. The study's methodology involved a simple correlation and regression analysis of the data. Selected Admission's variables were shown to be correlated to certain outcome variables. These Admission's variables included, the TEAS overall score, the last science course grade on admission (ACGs), the TEAS score in English, and the student's last earned English course on admission (ACGe). Only the TEAS total score showed correlation with success over a broad range of success score, i.e. ATIs, FUNg, and HAg. Overall, it was concluded that the ability of the admission variables to predict a specific score on student outcome assessment was weak. As a result of this study, the college's Admission office and nursing department will use the information to modify Admission's policies, develop pre-admission workshops, and continue to implement program initiatives to further support student success in an ADN nursing program. Further studies are warranted in order to assist other colleges in determining the level of academic qualifications most desirable in selecting students capable of success in their ADN nursing program.

Book Predictors of Academic Success for Undergraduate Nursing Students and Graduates

Download or read book Predictors of Academic Success for Undergraduate Nursing Students and Graduates written by Claudia Dean Horton and published by . This book was released on 2006 with total page 221 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The independent variables are demographics, prenursing science course grades, grades in junior and senior nursing courses and GPAs calculated at specific points in the educational process. The best variables to predict graduation are three junior level nursing courses, the junior level GPA, and the GPA of all nursing courses. For predicting passing NCLEX, the best predictors are ExitExams (the integration of scores earned on the Mosby's RN AssessTest and the RN Comprehensive Predictor exam), the junior level GPA, and the cumulative college GPA. Neither demographic variables, nor prenursing science course grades, nor the number of C grades earned in nursing courses were predictive of graduation or of passing NCLEX.

This book was released on 2004 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ABSTRACT ALDEN, KATHRYN RHODES. Predictors of Early Academic Success and Program Completion Among Baccalaureate Nursing Students. (Under the direction of Duane Akroyd.) The Nursing Undergraduate Retention and Success (NURS) Model (Jeffreys, 2004) was the theoretical framework for a study that examined the predictive value of selected cognitive (cumulative GPA, science GPA, science credits, previous degree, reading comprehension, math skill), noncognitive (stress), and demographic (age, ethnicity) student profile characteristics on the early academic success and on-time program completion of baccalaureate nursing students. The sample consisted of 370 BSN students at a public university in the Southeast. Data were collected from an existing student database. The dependent variable, early academic success, was based on grades in nursing courses during the first two semesters. The dependent variable, program completion, was measured as on-time graduation at the end of six semesters or graduation being delayed or denied. Three of the independent variables (reading comprehension, math skill, and stress) were measures from the Nurse Entrance Test. The results of logistic regression analysis showed that for the model predicting early academic success (Ï! = 57.76, p

Book Pre admission Predictors of Student Success in an Online Associate Degree Nursing Program

Download or read book Pre admission Predictors of Student Success in an Online Associate Degree Nursing Program written by Kathy A. Manning and published by . This book was released on 2007 with total page 77 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The growing nursing shortage will call for accessible and flexible nursing education. Online learning, uniquely at the associate degree nursing level, can provide nursing education without the barriers of the traditional classroom. Selecting appropriate applicants for success in the online environment is critical. The purpose of this study was to determine pre-admission predictors of success in the first and second semester nursing courses among online associate degree nursing students. Stepwise multiple regression analysis explored academic skills, learning style preferences, and personal habits for their contribution to academic success in 202 online nursing students. A composite score of the Test of Essential Academic Skills instrument by Assessment Technologies Institute (ATI), LLC, predicted success. Utilizing ATI's Self Assessment Inventory instrument, there were no positive correlations between learning styles and personal habits and nursing course success. A lesser important negative relationship was an individual learning style preference and second semester nursing course success.

Book Evaluation of Admission Criteria as Predictor for Success in the First Semester of an Associate Degree in Nursing Program

Download or read book Evaluation of Admission Criteria as Predictor for Success in the First Semester of an Associate Degree in Nursing Program written by Ludivina R. Cometa and published by . This book was released on 2017 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Attrition in the first semester of an ADN program tends to be high and remains a concern for nursing program administrators. Most unsuccessful students in nursing programs leave in the first or second semesters; therefore, studies are needed focused on this early part of ADN programs. One of the challenges for the admissions committee is to determine which admission criteria lead to student success. Nursing schools should choose applicants with the academic aptitude that can meet the demands of rigorous nursing coursework. The purpose of this descriptive correlational study was to evaluate the current admission criteria for a private, nonprofit college's ADN program and determine which criteria correlate with students' success in the first semester. Why some students fail the initial course, Fundamentals of Nursing (NUR101), is an important area of research. Analysis of admission criteria was conducted to determine the predictors of student success in this early part of the ADN program. This study used descriptive and inferential statistics to analyze the data. The independent variables were students' pre-nursing GPA, math grades, science grades, composite score on the TEAS V standardized nursing admission examination, and the college's selection point system (SPS). Also, student's demographic information: gender, age, marital status, student status (full-time/part-time), employment status (working/not working), household income, and prior degree (whether or not a student has an associate degree or higher) were included in the IV's. The dependent variable is the student's final grade in the first semester course of the ADN program. A nonprobability convenience sampling of 130 students comprised two cohorts of first-semester ADN students in the fall 2015 and spring 2016 semesters. The current admission criteria found significant were: Math Grade (p = .041), college GPA (p = .001), and Selection Point System (p =

Download or read book Prediction of Success in Baccalaureate Nursing Education in a Private Christian University written by Cynthia A. McGuire and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page 318 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this study is to determine which nursing school entrance requirements and nursing school performance indicators best predict student performance in the nursing program at Bob Jones University. Part of successful nursing education is to carefully identify the students who have sufficient academic ability to complete the work in a rigorous course of study. This study is important because it can help to validate the current entrance requirements in this nursing program and also to ascertain whether any changes need to be made. Revising the entrance requirements, based on the findings from a careful research study, should lead to increased success in the nursing program and on the NCLEX-RN. In addition, no matter what the entrance requirements are, it is inevitable that students will be admitted into the nursing clinical courses who later demonstrate weaknesses that indicate a high risk for failure in the program and on the NCLEX-RN. Early remediation strategies with these students can increase the probability of their success. This study intends to use both the entrance requirements and nursing school performance indicators to identify those students, as early as possible in the nursing program, who will most benefit from early remediation. - Introduction.
