While many individual institutions have had their histories written or their stories told, to date no single book has attempted to explore the full scope of the military school in American history. Cadets on Campus is the first book to cover the origin, history, and culture of the nation’s military schools—secondary and collegiate—and this breadth of coverage will appeal to historians and alumni alike. Book excerpt: This study evaluated the situation of women and minorities at the Air Force Academy addressing differences in performance indicators, cadets' perceptions, and Academy actions to enhance the success of women and minorities. Performance indicators for male and female cadets showed mixed results. Minority cadets had comparable physical fitness scores, lower academic admissions scores, lower academic grade point averages, and lower military performance averages than white cadets. Minorities were also subjected to more academic and honor reviews than whites. Minority cadets had higher attrition rates. A survey of cadets revealed perceptions that women and minorities generally received treatment equal to that of men and whites. However, a higher percentage of men than women perceived that women were treated better, and a slightly higher percentage of women than men perceived that they were treated worse. The study concluded that, although the Academy has taken a number of steps that should help women and minorities succeed at the Academy, it does not have a consolidated data base to analyze changes in student performance indicators and has not established criteria for determining when performance differences are significant. Morden weaves the ideas and moral attitudes that existed in the middle decades of the twentieth century to chronicle thirty-three years of WAC history from V-J Day 1945 to 20 October 1978, when the Women's Army Corps was abolished by Public Law 95-584 and discontinued by Department of the Army General Order 20, with the WAC officers assimilated into the other branches of the Army (except the combat arms). For the most part taking a chronological approach, Morden focuses on the interaction of plans, decisions, and personalities that affected the WAC directors as they pushed and prodded the Army, the Department of Defense, and Congress to achieve Regular Army and Reserve status, military credit for Women's Army Auxiliary Corps service, and promotion above the grade of lieutenant colonel. The early WAC directors, according to Morden, had the task of fighting for progress and equity, whereas their successors fought a losing battle to keep entry standards high and to retain the corps' separate status. She provides readers with a comprehensive picture of WAC growth and development and the transformation in the status of Army women brought by the advent of the all-volunteer Army and the women's rights movement of the seventies.
