Download or read book Administrators Perceptions of Tier Two Behavioral Interventions written by Anthony J. Grazel and published by . This book was released on 2017 with total page 108 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This qualitative grounded research design study analyzed high school administrators' perceptions of the effects of Tier Two Interventions on students' behavior and achievement within a school-wide positive behavior intervention support (SWPBIS) framework. Data were collected from 10 high schools in the states of Pennsylvania, Maryland, and Illinois in the form of surveys, open-ended responses, and interviews. Results of administrators' perceptions on the effects of Tier Two interventions were determined to have a positive and limited impact within various variables analyzed in the study's instruments on students' behavior and achievement. One area of future research may include a replication of this study, in order to obtain more participants, as more high schools within the United States begin to implement Tier Two interventions within an SWPBIS framework.

Book A Collective Case Study on Elementary School Administrators and Teachers Perceptions of a School wide Positive Behavior Intervention and Supports Framework

Download or read book A Collective Case Study on Elementary School Administrators and Teachers Perceptions of a School wide Positive Behavior Intervention and Supports Framework written by H. David Cawthon and published by . This book was released on 2016 with total page 195 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this collective case study was to explore and understand administrators’ and teachers’ perceptions on how a school-wide positive behavior intervention and supports (SWPBIS) framework influences school climate at the elementary school level. The theory guiding this study was grounded in B.F. Skinner’s theory of operant behavior and applied behavior analysis, which supports the use of positive reinforcement to increase desired behavior in a real world setting. A rich description of the perceived influence a SWPBIS framework has on school climate was constructed by answering the central research question: “How do administrators and teachers perceive the influence of a SWPBIS on school climate at the elementary school level?” Although numerous research studies regarding SWPBIS have been conducted, few have addressed the perceptions of administrators and teachers. Participants included 37 administrators, teachers, and school personnel from 3 north Georgia elementary schools within the same district that had implemented SWPBIS. Data was collected during face-to-face interviews, focus group sessions, and from relevant documentation to increase trustworthiness through triangulation. Results of the present study demonstrate that administrators and teachers believe SWPBIS has positively changed the mindset and behaviors of students, teachers, and administrators resulting in a healthier school climate. Implications of the study include measures for central office personnel in making implementation decisions, measures for school administrators to increase buy-in, and measures for teachers to choose specific features to maximize the success of SWPBIS

Book Perceived Efficacy of Behavioral Interventions Used in Behavior Reassignment Sites

Download or read book Perceived Efficacy of Behavioral Interventions Used in Behavior Reassignment Sites written by Martha R Koepke and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page 58 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Some alternative education schools have characteristics such as flexibility in school design, small school size with increased opportunities to build relationships of trust, and individualized instruction that address students' behavioral needs. As a veteran special education teacher working in an alternative education school, specifically a behavior reassignment site, the researcher began with a concern that the needs of students with EB/D may not be met due to the comprehensive nature of the students' needs and resource limitations within this setting. Past research has studied the effective behavioral interventions that have demonstrated benefit to students with disabilities, as well as alternative education as a setting for instruction. That literature helped to define the main research question: Do behavioral interventions used in alternative education schools, specifically behavior reassignment sites, impact the behavior of students with EB/D, as perceived by their teachers? Special education teachers and those making student placement decisions must be aware of the behavioral interventions provided, or not provided, to this vulnerable population within this setting. Essentially the study asked whether the behavioral interventions used in certain alternative education settings for students with EB/D benefits them, and to what extent or level of efficacy. To effectively examine the efficacy, or lack of efficacy, of behavioral interventions used in alternative education, several working questions were developed: 1. What behavioral interventions are needed by students with EB/D? 2. What resources of behavioral interventions are available to special education teachers? 3. What is the short term and long term impact of behavioral interventions on the behavior of students with EB/D? These questions helped identify components of the research question and helped inform the construction of the survey in particular. Academic failure, retention, suspension, expulsion or dropping out of school are all factors that may affect students with EB/D. Many of them are placed in alternative education schools for a period of time. Within that unique setting, special education teachers have an opportunity to use strategies that may change the trajectory of students' behavior. This study intended to help determine the level of benefit of the behavioral interventions that these students require. Results then can be applied within this setting to the behavior of students with EB/D to increase the option of reentry into traditional schools. This study set out to investigate the behavioral interventions used in alternative education schools, specified as behavior reassignment sites. The study also intended to discover the level of impact these strategies have on the behavior of students with EB/D. It was expected that the study would provide significant feedback to special education teachers, staff, and administrators in alternative education schools. The researcher hoped to identify behavioral interventions that demonstrated benefit or lack of benefit to students with EB/D. The goal was to provide insight into the resources and strategies that may enable special education teachers to better effect changes in students' behavior.

Book The Effects of Positive Behavior Intervention Supports and Tier II Interventions on Academic Achievement Among Elementary Students

Download or read book The Effects of Positive Behavior Intervention Supports and Tier II Interventions on Academic Achievement Among Elementary Students written by Geoffrey Dean Reno and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page 167 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This correlational research study examined the effect of behavioral interventions through school-wide positive behavior interventions and supports (PBIS) on elementary student reading and math achievement in one Midwestern suburban elementary school among 71 students in grades first through fifth participating in PBIS Tier II interventions compared to 71 peers not participating in the intervention. Additionally, this study analyzed teacher perceptions of PBIS implementation and experiences with students participating in the Tier II behavior interventions. The research contributes to the literature by examining the effects of individualized interventions on academic achievement for students. The PBIS Tier II intervention of Check-In/Check-Out (CICO) was implemented by the school for students unable to consistently meet school-wide behavior expectations. Data from the Renaissance Learning STAR Reading and Math assessments and progress monitoring of student behaviors were gathered and analyzed. A teacher survey was distributed to building staff members to understand their perceptions of PBIS Tier II interventions and their experiences with students participating with the intervention. A Pearson correlation and two-sample t-test were used to analyze the possible relationship between the student participation in the PBIS Tier II behavior interventions and their reading and math academic achievement according to the students' scaled score gains on the STAR Reading and Math assessments. Through this study, no statistically significant differences were found between student participation in PBIS Tier II behavior interventions and academic achievement in reading and math. Consequently, these findings are discussed in terms of assisting schools implementing PBIS Tier II interventions to address reading and math academic challenges.

Book Principal Perceptions

Download or read book Principal Perceptions written by Courtney K. Johnson and published by . This book was released on 2020 with total page 314 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study explored the impact of the Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS) framework on discipline disproportionality in an Eastern Virginia school division. Nationally, African American students are suspended and expelled at a much higher rate than their peers (Skiba et al., 2016). This study explored the impact PBIS had on this rate. The work is valuable to those interested in introducing the PBIS framework in their school division or school. A phenomenological, qualitative study was conducted with the first research question using discipline data from the division to track trends. The second research question was answered by interviewing principals within the division. The results of this study showed that PBIS did not impact the rate of disproportionality in the schools in this study; however, principals perceived that PBIS did have a positive impact on student behavior, school culture, and the overall discipline program of their school. This work adds to the body of research that PBIS does have a positive impact on school culture and school discipline. On the other hand, PBIS will require a more concerted focus on equity in order to make strides against impacting discipline disproportionality.
