Book Personal Fabrication

Download or read book Personal Fabrication written by Patrick Baudisch and published by . This book was released on 2017-05-08 with total page 140 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While fabrication technologies have been in use in industry for several decades, expiring patents have recently allowed the technology to spill over to technology-enthusiastic "makers." Personal Fabrication looks at the massive, disruptive changes that are likely to be seen in interactive computing, as well as to computing as a whole. It discusses six main challenges that need to be addressed for this change to take place, and explains researchers in HCI will play a key role in tackling these challenges.

Book Virtual Reality and Augmented Reality

Download or read book Virtual Reality and Augmented Reality written by Bruno Arnaldi and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2018-05-08 with total page 370 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Virtual and Augmented Reality have existed for a long time but were stuck to the research world or to some large manufacturing companies. With the appearance of low-cost devices, it is expected a number of new applications, including for the general audience. This book aims at making a statement about those novelties as well as distinguishing them from the complexes challenges they raise by proposing real use cases, replacing those recent evolutions through the VR/AR dynamic and by providing some perspective for the years to come.

Book Interactive Task Learning

Download or read book Interactive Task Learning written by Kevin A. Gluck and published by MIT Press. This book was released on 2019-08-16 with total page 355 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Experts from a range of disciplines explore how humans and artificial agents can quickly learn completely new tasks through natural interactions with each other. Humans are not limited to a fixed set of innate or preprogrammed tasks. We learn quickly through language and other forms of natural interaction, and we improve our performance and teach others what we have learned. Understanding the mechanisms that underlie the acquisition of new tasks through natural interaction is an ongoing challenge. Advances in artificial intelligence, cognitive science, and robotics are leading us to future systems with human-like capabilities. A huge gap exists, however, between the highly specialized niche capabilities of current machine learning systems and the generality, flexibility, and in situ robustness of human instruction and learning. Drawing on expertise from multiple disciplines, this Strüngmann Forum Report explores how humans and artificial agents can quickly learn completely new tasks through natural interactions with each other. The contributors consider functional knowledge requirements, the ontology of interactive task learning, and the representation of task knowledge at multiple levels of abstraction. They explore natural forms of interactions among humans as well as the use of interaction to teach robots and software agents new tasks in complex, dynamic environments. They discuss research challenges and opportunities, including ethical considerations, and make proposals to further understanding of interactive task learning and create new capabilities in assistive robotics, healthcare, education, training, and gaming. Book Interactive Public Ambient Displays microform

Download or read book Interactive Public Ambient Displays microform written by Daniel John Vogel and published by Library and Archives Canada = Bibliothèque et Archives Canada. This book was released on 2005 with total page 214 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We develop design principles and an interaction framework for sharable, interactive public ambient displays that support the transition from implicit to explicit interaction with both public and personal information. A prototype system implementation that embodies these design principles is described. We use novel display and interaction techniques such as simple hand gestures and touch screen input for explicit interaction and contextual body orientation and position cues for implicit interaction. Techniques are presented for subtle notification, self-revealing help, privacy controls, and shared use by multiple people each in their own context. The results of two user studies are also presented, and future directions discussed.

Book Analyzing Language in Restricted Domains

Download or read book Analyzing Language in Restricted Domains written by Ralph Grishman and published by Psychology Press. This book was released on 2014-04-08 with total page 265 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1986. For most of the authors represented in this collection, the term 'Sublanguage' suggests a subsystem of language that behaves essentially like the whole language, while being limited in reference to a specific subject domain. Argued throughout this title, even if sublanguage grammars can be related to the grammar of the full standard language, sublanguages behave in many ways like autonomous systems. This volume will illustrate that, as such, they take on theoretical interest as microcosms of the whole language. The papers collected in this volume were presented at the Workshop on Sublanguage, held at New York University on January 19-20, 1984.
