When two people are compared, hie means the person nearest to the speaker's mind (here Alexander); ille to what is more remote from it (here Philip). Hie and ille in such passages may be translated, the latter, the former. 2 Two sad instances of this are recorded in the death of Cleitus, and the vengeance inflicted on the Tyrians. 3 This was the reason, no doubt, why he was so anxious to be called the son of Jupiter Ammon. He thought it would make him more awful in the eyes of the Asiatics. Josephus, the Jewish historian, tells us that Alexander, when he visited Jerusalem, was much impressed by the religion and temple of the Jews, offered sacrifices to Jehovah, and treated the priests with much respect; so that we may conclude that he was reverent towards what he thought deserving of reverence.
