Book Development of Surface Treatments for Titanium Alloys for Adhesive Bonding

Download or read book Development of Surface Treatments for Titanium Alloys for Adhesive Bonding written by Gerald W. Lively and published by . This book was released on 1972 with total page 86 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report describes the development of an improved surface treatment for titanium alloys for adhesive bonding. Numerous surface treatments including acid etch, anodize, vapor blast and combinations were investigated. The effect of hostile environments such as salt spray, high humidity and high temperature on bonded tensile lapshear (including prestress and aged) specimens was evaluated. An epoxy- novalac adhesive was utilized for 350 F ENVIRONMENTS WHILE A POLYIMIDE WAS EVALUATED AT 600 F.A combination mechanical-chemical treatment was found to offer the best surface for bonding titanium alloys. By combining a reactive solution with a conventional vapor blast, intermittent contamination or reoxidation of the cleaned titanium surface was reduced significantly. The treated titanium surfaces were examined with the scanning electron microscope and various topographies correlated to strength values of bonded specimens. Evaporation rate analysis was also utilized. No detrimental effects to the metallurgical properties of the titanium were found. There was no reduction in fatigue strength or ductility and no increase in absorbed hydrogen. (Author-PL).

Book Joining of Titanium

Download or read book Joining of Titanium written by Robert Edward Monroe and published by . This book was released on 1967 with total page 86 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report supplies information on joining processes applicable to titanium and its alloys in sheet metal applications, primarily related directly to airframe construction. Although the material presented here does not cover all titanium joining processes, and omits such processes as plasma-arc, submerged-arc, electroslag, flash, and high-frequency resistance welding, the data presented cover materials up to 2-inches thick in some cases and the report should be useful to anyone seeking titanium joining information. The joining processes covered fall into five categories: welding, brazing, metallurgical bonding (diffusion and deformation bonding), adhesive bonding, and mechanical fastening. The fusion welding processes that are discussed in detail include gas tungsten arc, gas metal arc, arc spot, and electron beam. The resistance processes give extended coverage are spot, roll spot, and seam welding. (Author).

Book The Durability of Epoxy Adhesive Bonds Formed with Titanium Alloy

Download or read book The Durability of Epoxy Adhesive Bonds Formed with Titanium Alloy written by and published by . This book was released on 2002 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The durability of adhesive bonds formed between titanium alloy (Ti-6A1-4V) and rubber toughened epoxy structural adhesives used for repair bonding applications was examined. Two surface treatments were studied; the grit-blast and silane method, currently employed for titanium repairs on F-111 at RAAF Amberley and the F/A-18 SRM method which uses Pasa-Jell 107, a proprietary based toxic chemical treatment Results from wedge style durability tests indicated the grit-blast and silane pre-treatment provided notably better performance than the Pasa-Jell 107 pre-treatment for epoxy bonds formed with Ti-6A1AV alloy. Addition of BR127 primer to the pre-treated surfaces did not offer substantial improvement in durability performance. The durability of titanium-epoxy adhesive bonds for the grit-blast and silane pre-treatment on titanium was inferior to the performance observed on aluminum alloys. Further research will be required to improve the performance of the grit-blast and silane treatment on titanium to levels observed for aluminium.

Book Industrial Applications of Adhesive Bonding

Download or read book Industrial Applications of Adhesive Bonding written by J.H. Sadek and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 247 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Recently, considerable research effort has been devoted to the fabrication of structures by adhesive bonding due to its definite advantages compared with other conventional techniques such as casting and welding. With bonding the need for stress relieving is avoided, the lead time is reduced and the design can be carried out according to optimum principles with the ability to bond different materials: for example, aluminium to steel, plastics to metals. These advantages have led to continuous efforts in studying the mechanism of bonding, in improving the properties of structural of adhesive bonding in technically adhesives and in widening the use demanding industrial applications. The aim of this book is to present recent developments in the use of adhesive bonding in structural fabrication throughout the world, as illustrations to successful appli cation of this novel technique of fabrication. For industrial applications to be successful, the engineer should be aware ofthe various types of adhesives available and of their properties, and also of the new design philosophy to be adopted in such bonded structures, and a portion of the book is aimed at highlighting the properties of the adhesives and their suitability and at assisting the engineer in his choice of the proper adhesive for the job at hand. Also emphasised in this book are the various means of destructive and non-destructive testing of bonded joints, with special mention of structures fabricated by adhesive bonding.

Book PPQ Adhesives for Large Area Bonding of Titanium Alloys

Download or read book PPQ Adhesives for Large Area Bonding of Titanium Alloys written by M. K. O'Rell and published by . This book was released on 1975 with total page 59 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Diels-Alder reaction was investigated as a means to crosslink polyphenyl-quinoxalines (PPQ) which were intended for use as adhesives in large area bonding of titanium alloys. Two promising candidate polymers were identified for process development studies. Double lap-shear specimens were press cure fabricated from the adhesives and Ti-6Al-4V adherends which demonstrated room temperature strengths of 4000 psi and elevated temperature strengths of 2800 psi and 2000 psi at 450 F and 550 F, respectively. Detailed evaluation studies were conducted which included stress durability determinations, crack extension measurements, peel strength measurements and blister detection tests which demonstrated applicability for preparing large area bonded specimens. The results of the detailed testing indicated that the crosslinked PPQ adhesive possessed toughness and that large area bonded specimens can be press cure fabricated. (Author).
