  • Pages : 174 pages

Download or read book Putting Faith in Hate written by Richard Moon and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2018-02-15 with total page 174 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: To allow or restrict hate speech is a hotly debated issue in many societies. While the right to freedom of speech is fundamental to liberal democracies, most countries have accepted that hate speech causes significant harm and ought to be regulated. Richard Moon examines the application of hate speech laws when religion is either the source or target of such speech. Moon describes the various legal restrictions on hate speech, religious insult, and blasphemy in Canada, Europe and elsewhere, and uses cases from different jurisdictions to illustrate the particular challenges raised by religious hate speech. The issues addressed are highly topical: speech that attacks religious communities, specifically anti-Muslim rhetoric, and hateful speech that is based on religious doctrine or scripture, such as anti-gay speech. The book draws on a rich understanding of freedom of expression, the harms of hate speech, and the role of religion in public life.

Book Religious Truth and Religious Diversity

Download or read book Religious Truth and Religious Diversity written by Nathan S. Hilberg and published by Peter Lang. This book was released on 2009 with total page 186 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Interpreting religion poses a dilemma: realist interpretations of religion face the philosophical problem of religious diversity and irrealist interpretations of religion are revisionary. The author explores the implications of this dilemma and also clarifies the confusions caused by two abiding problems: those stemming from, first, the concern over which religious beliefs are true rather than attending to what it means for a belief to be true, and, second, the failure to acknowledge two fundamentally different forms of religious irrealism, anti-realism and non-realism. Providing critical assessment of the relevant works of John Hick, William Alston, Alvin Plantinga, Peter van Inwagen, and Ludwig Wittgenstein and his followers, this book is appropriate for upper-level undergraduate and graduate courses in philosophy of religion and religious theory.

It provides a multi-disciplinary perspective on this complex subject, cross-fertilizing work on religious plurality with truth-claims from theologians as well as philosophers from the continental and analytic traditions. The book includes three major parts. Part 1 explores the ideas around religious diversity and truth; Part 2 draws out the epistemic import of religious diversity; and Part 3 concludes the volume by examining the practical and social aspects of religious diversity. Bringing a transdisciplinary perspective to a topic that remains at the forefront of conversation around the religious life of the world, this book will be of great interest to scholars of Religious Studies, Theology and the Philosophy of Religion.

Book The Assurance of Things Hoped for

Download or read book The Assurance of Things Hoped for written by Avery Dulles and published by Oxford University Press, USA. This book was released on 1996-09 with total page 324 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Faith, since the earliest Christian theologians, has been regarded as the fundamental Christian virtue--the prerequisite for hope, charity, and good works. In this book, Avery Dulles examines the biblical foundations and history of theological reflection on faith, from the Greek and Latin fathers to such modern giants as Tillich, Rahner, and Lonergan. Further, Dulles presents his own systematic synthesis, reflecting on such topics as the nature and object of faith; the certitude of faith; the birth, growth, and loss of faith; and faith and salvation. The result is a refreshingly relevant theology of faith for our day.
