Book excerpt: Excerpt from Addresses on the Civil Sabbath, From a Patriotic and Humanitarian Standpoint: With Appendix Containing Sabbath Laws of All the States, Judicial Decision, Replies to Seventh-Day Adventists, Etc The longer documents are not essays, but addresses for the people - and in part by the people, as will be seen. I have not thought best to erase from the reports the expressions Of public sentiment, which are an important factor in the solution Of Sabbath problems. W. J. C. Berry, Librarian Of the New York Association Of the Bar, has aided in editing for these documents what we believe to be the first complete collection Of the Sabbath laws Of the United States and the important Court decisions upon them, giving text Of each law, and decisions in form for legal use, all brought down to date. I have added some suggestions Of amendments and other notes. Such a collection is greatly needed, not by lawyers alone, but also by ministers and other friends Of the Sabbath, who can seldom tell exactly what their Sabbath law forbids and what it permits. Purchasers can usually download a free scanned copy of the original book (without typos) from the publisher. Not indexed. Not illustrated. 1890 edition. Excerpt: ...it is religious. Of course it is no objection, but, on the contrary, is a high recommendation, to a legislative enactment, based on justice or public policy, that is found to coincide with the precepts of a pure religion; but the fact is nevertheless true that the power to make the law rests in the legislative control over things temporal, and not over things spiritual. Thus the statute upon.which the defendant relies, prohibiting common labor on the Sabbath, .could not stand for a moment as a law of this State if its sole foundation was the Christian duty of keeping that day holy and its sole motive to enforce the observance of that duty. For no power over things merely spiritual has ever been delegated to the Government, while any preference of one religion over another which the statute would give upon the above hypothesis is directly prohibited by the Constitution. Acts evil in their nature, or dangerous to the public welfare, may be forbidden and punished, though sanctioned by one religion and prohibited by another; but this creates no preference whatever, for they would be equally forbidden and punished if all religions permitted them. Thus, no plea of his religion could shield a murderer, ravisher or bigamist; for the community would be at the mercy of superstition if such crimes as these could be permitted with impunity because sanctioned by some religious delusion. We are, then, to regard the statute under consideration as a mere municipal or police regulation, whose validity is neither strengthened nor weakened by the fact that the day of rest it enjoins is the Sabbath day. Wisdom requires that men should refrain from labor at least one day in seven, and the advantages of having the day of rest fixed, and so fixed as to happen..

Book Jewish Space Lasers

Download or read book Jewish Space Lasers written by Mike Rothschild and published by Melville House. This book was released on 2023-09-19 with total page 337 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With the current rise of antisemitism, this important book looks at how one Jewish family —the Rothschilds—became a lightning rod for the conspiracy theories of the last two centuries, and how those theories are still very much alive today. In 2018 Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene took to social media to share her suspicions that the California wildfires were started by ‘space solar generators’ which were funded by powerful, mysterious backers. Instantly, thousands of people rallied around her, blaming the fires on “Jewish space lasers” and, ultimately, the Rothschild family. For more than 200 years, the name "Rothschild" has been synonymous with two things: great wealth, and conspiracy theories about what they're "really doing" with it. Almost from the moment Mayer Amschel Rothschild and his sons emerged from the Jewish ghetto of Frankfurt to revolutionize the banking world, the Rothschild family has been the target of myths, hoaxes, bizarre accusations, and constant, virulent antisemitism. Over the years, they have been blamed for everything from the sinking of the Titanic, to causing the Great Depression, and even creating the COVID-19 pandemic. Jewish Space Lasers: The Rothschilds and 200 Years of Conspiracy Theories is a deeply researched dive into the history of the conspiracy industry around the Rothschild family - from the "pamphlet wars" of Paris in the 1840s to the dankest pits of the internet today. Journalist and conspiracy theory expert Mike Rothschild, who isn't related to the family, sorts out myth from reality to find the truth about these conspiracy theories and their spreaders. Who were the Rothschilds? Who are they today? Do they really own $500 trillion and every central bank, in addition to “controlling the British money supply?” Is any of this actually true? And why, even as their wealth and influence have waned, do they continue to drive conspiracies and hoaxes?
