Book excerpt: Excerpt from Addresses: Delivered at the Massachusetts Agricultural College, June 21st, 1887, on the 25th Anniversary of the Passage of the Morrill Land Grant Act During the middle ages the work of the schools was limited to the education of those who were to go into the learned professions. It is even a matter of some doubt whether the great Charles, the organizer of schools in France and Germany could himself write or read. It is certain that one of the greatest of French military lead ers, as late as the time when the Renaissance was beginning to dawn, was absolutely illiterate. No'r was this condition of affairs a singular one, or one that should excite our surprise. Before the introduction of the Baconian philos Ophy, the methods of looking at the problems of life were the reverse of the methods that have now come to prevail. Aristotle said, Look into your own minds, study the nature of thought, look into the nature of things, and thus you will be able to reason out the course of con duct you ought to pursue. The Aristotelian philosophy prevailed until the seventeenth century. At length came Bacon and Descartes. Their methods were the opposite. They said, study things not so much in their nature, - which you cannot know anything about by a process of reasoning - as in their characteristics and relations. You are to reason from their external appearance and characteristics which everybody can investigate and in some sense at least understand into their internal natures. Thus it was that the Baconian or inductive philosophy had for its aim the setting of all thinking beings to the examining of the things everywhere about them. It taught not only that the domain of thought, but also that the domain of action, was open to the scrutiny of human intelligence. It exhorted everybody to pry into whatever there was within the range of observation. Examine the methods of nature, in order to discover the laws of nature. Examine the habits of animals in order to become acquainted with the laws of their development. Study the rocks, the trees, the plants, the flowers, in fact, study all the domain of nature, in order to discover the secrets of nature. The exhortation was followed in the course of the last century by the birth of what are called the Nat ural Sciences. Book To Raise Up the Man Farthest Down

Download or read book To Raise Up the Man Farthest Down written by Dana R. Chandler and published by University of Alabama Press. This book was released on 2018-07-10 with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An important historical account of Tuskegee University’s significant advances in health care, which affected millions of lives worldwide. Alabama’s celebrated, historically black Tuskegee University is most commonly associated with its founding president, Booker T. Washington, the scientific innovator George Washington Carver, or the renowned Tuskegee Airmen. Although the university’s accomplishments and devotion to social issues are well known, its work in medical research and health care has received little acknowledgment. Tuskegee has been fulfilling Washington’s vision of “healthy minds and bodies” since its inception in 1881. In To Raise Up the Man Farthest Down, Dana R. Chandler and Edith Powell document Tuskegee University’s medical and public health history with rich archival data and never-before-published photographs. Chandler and Powell especially highlight the important but largely unsung role that Tuskegee University researchers played in the eradication of polio, and they add new dimension and context to the fascinating story of the HeLa cell line that has been brought to the public’s attention by popular media. Tuskegee University was on the forefront in providing local farmers the benefits of agrarian research. The university helped create the massive Agricultural Extension System managed today by land grant universities throughout the United States. Tuskegee established the first baccalaureate nursing program in the state and was also home to Alabama’s first hospital for African Americans. Washington hired Alabama’s first female licensed physician as a resident physician at Tuskegee. Most notably, Tuskegee was the site of a remarkable development in American biochemistry history: its microbiology laboratory was the only one relied upon by the National Foundation for Infantile Paralysis (the organization known today as the March of Dimes) to produce the HeLa cell cultures employed in the national field trials for the Salk and Sabin polio vaccines. Chandler and Powell are also interested in correcting a long-held but false historical perception that Tuskegee University was the location for the shameful and infamous US Public Health Service study of untreated syphilis. Meticulously researched, this book is filled with previously undocumented information taken directly from the vast Tuskegee University archives. Readers will gain a new appreciation for how Tuskegee’s people and institutions have influenced community health, food science, and national medical life throughout the twentieth century.

Book Transforming Agricultural Education for a Changing World

Download or read book Transforming Agricultural Education for a Changing World written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2009-11-16 with total page 221 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the next ten years, colleges of agriculture will be challenged to transform their role in higher education and their relationship to the evolving global food and agricultural enterprise. If successful, agriculture colleges will emerge as an important venue for scholars and stakeholders to address some of the most complex and urgent problems facing society. Such a transformation could reestablish and sustain the historical position of the college of agriculture as a cornerstone institution in academe, but for that to occur, a rapid and concerted effort by our higher education system is needed to shape their academic focus around the reality of issues that define the world's systems of food and agriculture and to refashion the way in which they foster knowledge of those complex systems in their students. Although there is no single approach to transforming agricultural education, a commitment to change is imperative.
