LL. D., As President of Lake Forest University, June 22, 1887 An enterprising young Review has recently persuaded nearly a dozen leading American educators and literary men to write articles, frankly personal, on the theme: How I was Educated. As I will not weary you, before the real orations of the day begin, with a formal address, I shall confine my remarks chie y to a partial analysis of their interesting state ments. I can do so the more gladly because they apparently confirm an old Opinion that the principal elements of a success ful college education cluster around four essential points. The first nucleus - preliminary, if you like - is made up of one's original family in uences. Like President Dwight, we may well accept that keen dictum: The first rule in edu cation is to select the right father and mother. Accordingly, ex-president Kendrick observes: My education began in the cradle, and back of it. Though my father died when I was but three years old, I can see how largely he determined my individuality and history. Mothers are even more in uential. Augustine, Chrysostom and the Wesleys, Napoleon, Madame de Sta'e'l and Marie Antoinette, instantly recall Monica, Are thusa, Susannah Wesley, Madame Mere Letitia, Mad ame N ecker and Maria Theresa. But I need not urge the notion of this original bias in a Presbyterian institution, where every student is known to betray distinct traces of Adam and Eve. We all know that the laws of heredity will assert themselves. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: TO PRESUME to multiply books in this day of excellent writers and learned book-makers is a rash thing perhaps for a novice. It may even be a presumption that shall be met by the production itself being driven from the market by the keen, searching criticism of not only the reviewers, but less noted objectors. And yet there are books that meet a ready sale because they seem like "Ishmaelites"--against everybody and everybody against them. Whether this work shall ever accomplish the design of the author may not at all be determined by its sale. While I hope to secure some pecuniary gain that I may accompany it with a companion illustrating what our women have done, yet by no means do I send it forth with the sordid idea of gain. I would rather it would do some good than make a single dollar, and I echo the wish of "Abou Ben Adhem," in that sweet poem of that name, written by Leigh Hunt. The angel was writing at the table, in his vision. The names of those who love the Lord.Abou wanted to know if his was there--and the angel said "No." Said Abou, I pray thee, then, write me as one that loves his fellow-men. That is what I ask to be recorded of me. The angel wrote and vanished. The next night It came again, with a great awakening light. And showed the names whom love of God had blessed. And lo! Ben Adhem's name led all the rest. I desire that the book shall be a help to students, male and female, in the way of information concerning our great names. I have noticed in my long experience as a teacher, that many of my students were wofully ignorant of the work of our great colored men--even ignorant of their names. If they knew their names, it was some indefinable something they had done--just what, they could not tell. If in a slight degree I shall here furnish the data for that class of rising men and women, I shall feel much pleased. Herein will be found many who had severe trials in making their way through schools of different grades. It is a suitable book, it is hoped, to be put into the hands of intelligent, aspiring young people everywhere, that they might see the means and manners of men's elevation, and by this be led to undertake the task of going through high schools and colleges. If the persons herein mentioned could rise to the exalted stations which they have and do now hold, what is there to prevent any young man or woman from achieving greatness? Many, yea, nearly all these came from the loins of slave fathers, and were the babes of women in bondage, and themselves felt the leaden hand of slavery on their own bodies; but whether slaves or not, they suffered with their brethren because of color. That "sum of human villainies" did not crush out the life and manhood of the race. I wish the book to show to the world--to our oppressors and even our friends--that the Negro race is still alive, and must possess more intellectual vigor than any other section of the human family, or else how could they be crushed as slaves in all these years since 1620, and yet to-day stand side by side with the best blood in America, in white institutions, grappling with abstruse problems in Euclid and difficult classics, and master them? Was ever such a thing seen in another people? Whence these lawyers, doctors, authors, editors, divines, lecturers, linguists, scientists, college presidents and such, in one quarter of a century?

Foss, D.D., As President of Wesleyan University: Tuesday, October 26th, 1875 The duty which has been devolved upon me I'have undertaken with unfeigned reluctance. For to me, as to all but one of my colleagues, it seemed that our only fitting representative was that one preeminent in scholarly character and in services to the College, and honored in being the personal friend of you; whom, with all the cordiality Of intimate friendship, we would welcome. I have under taken this duty with reluctance; yet I should be false to my own feelings did I not avow the profound satisfaction which I feel in its performance. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Addresses Delivered at the Inauguration of Rev. Lewis W. Green, D. D: As President of Transylvania University and State Normal School, November 18, 1856 By virtue of an act of the General Assembly of Kentucky Transylvania University has been reorganized, and a Normal School established as an important, if not an indispensable, auxiliary of the Common School system of the State. This system, after struggling for existence for many years, is at length in successful operation, and to insure its perpetuity has been interwoven with our organic law. To impart to it the proper degree of efficiency and usefulness it is admitted, on all hands, that there should be competent and well qualified teachers, in sufficient numbers to meet the public demand. To effect this great object the Legislature, in its wisdom, has established this school, where our own young men can be educated in the art of teaching; and we have now assembled to inaugurate you, sir, as its first President under the new organization. It would be out of place for me to speak of the importance of such an establishment to the cause of Common School education, in which the whole State feels such deep and vital interest, and I only rise on behalf of the Trustees, whose organ I am, under whose control this Institution has been placed, and by whom you have been unanimously elected President - and may I not add, also, on behalf of the State of Kentucky, whose most cherished institution is sought to be promoted - to welcome you back to your native State and, with a heart glowing with honest pride with the anticipation of triumphant success, to congratulate you on the enlarged sphere of usefulness which is open before you. D. 1869 Dear Sir: By the Board of Trustees of Knox College, you have been elected to the office of President of this Institution. In this board are represented various denominations of evangelical Christians. The Institution was originally founded on principles of unity and confiding co-operation among them in the great work of Christian education. The vote by which you were chosen to this office, was perfectly unanimous. In all subsequent action on measures proposed by you there has been perfect unanimity in the board, and we trust that this mutual confidence and unanimity will never cease to exist. That this may be so we invoke the all pervading influences of the Divine Spirit, the highest and most perfect bond of unity, that we may be permanently joined together in love, that we may have wisdom to understand the great work to which we are called, and energy to execute it, for the glory of God and the welfare of this community, of our country and of the world.
