Book excerpt: Excerpt from Address, Delivered on Occasion of the Opening of the University of the State of Mississippi: In Behalf of the Board of Trustees, November 6, 1848 All things are now ready, and in the name of the State of Missis sippi, this day we dedicate these buildings and these beautiful groves to the cause of learning and science. How strange and how strik ing is the contrast of the present with the past! Twelve years ago, on the spot where stands this grand and tasteful temple of the god dess of wisdom, the, rank grass waved in its luxuriance before the breeze unharmed, save by the tread of the wild beast and the foot steps of the savage, in pursuit of his game. Unbroken stillness brooded over the hills and valleys. Here and there could be heard the scream of the panther and the more, fearful yell of the red man. Here the man was distinguished from the beast, only by his capacity to circumvent an d destroy him. All alike, were content and happywhen their thirst was'slaked and their appetite satisfied. Now as the star of empire is on its westward march, how changed! Here we raise an' alter to genius and learning, and on it we expect these to make sacrifices who feel and know the Superiority of the mind over the body, who prefer intellect to brute force, who appicciate the value of the immortal over the mortal man To this altar we invite worshippers from all classes and conditions m society. Would to Heaven every youth in the land'could command the time and the means to hang and hold on to its horns, until he could snatch there f1om a live coal and bear it th1ough the land to warm, elevate, refine and cheer the hearts and instruct the minds of our people; the one in pointing the way and making plain the paths which lead to the bl ful re calm of immortality; another, in expounding the law and ad ministering justice from the bench; another, in pleading the cause and defending the rights of the injured citizen at the bar; another, in examining the human system and extracting those essences f1om the vegetable Eband mineral kingdoms, w hich shall cool the burning fever and heal up all manner of diseases; another, in engaging in the use ful and henmable task of 1ea1ing the tender thought and teaching the young idea how to shoot; another, in the skilful cultivation of our generous soil, by which the largest yield of the useful plants is gathered ln return for the smallest amount of labor; another, by the applicationof science to the mechanic arts, so as to make the vely elements obedient to the behests of man, and thus contibute to the wealth and comfort of society. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: University, Court, and Slave reveals long-forgotten connections between pre-Civil War southern universities and slavery. Universities and their faculty owned people-sometimes dozens of people-and profited from their labor while many slaves endured physical abuse on campuses. As Alfred L. Brophy shows, southern universities fought the emancipation movement for economic reasons, but used their writings on history, philosophy, and law in an attempt to justify their position and promote their institutions. Indeed, as the antislavery movement gained momentum, southern academics and their allies in the courts became bolder in their claims. Some went so far as to say that slavery was supported by natural law. The combination of economic reasoning and historical precedent helped shape a southern, pro-slavery jurisprudence. Following Lincoln's November 1860 election, southern academics joined politicians, judges, lawyers, and other leaders in arguing that their economy and society was threatened. Southern jurisprudence led them to believe that any threats to slavery and property justified secession. Bolstered by the courts, academics took their case to the southern public-and ultimately to the battlefield-to defend slavery. A path-breaking and deeply researched history of southern universities' investment in and defense of slavery, University, Court, and Slave will fundamentally transform our understanding of the institutional foundations pro-slavery thought.

Recognizing the north's superiority in industry and technology, they turned their own schools from a classical orientation to a new emphasis on science and engineering. These educators came to define the Southern idea of progress and passed it on to their students, thus helping to create and perpetuate an expectation for the arrival of the New South."--BOOK JACKET.

Book excerpt: This new edition of Southern Writers assumes its distinguished predecessor's place as the essential reference on literary artists of the American South. Broadly expanded and thoroughly revised, it boasts 604 entries-nearly double the earlier edition's-written by 264 scholars. For every figure major and minor, from the venerable and canonical to the fresh and innovative, a biographical sketch and chronological list of published works provide comprehensive, concise, up-to-date information. Here in one convenient source are the South's novelists and short story writers, poets and dramatists, memoirists and essayists, journalists, scholars, and biographers from the colonial period to the twenty-first century. What constitutes a "southern writer" is always a matter for debate. Editors Joseph M. Flora and Amber Vogel have used a generous definition that turns on having a significant connection to the region, in either a personal or literary sense. New to this volume are younger writers who have emerged in the quarter century since the dictionary's original publication, as well as older talents previously unknown or unacknowledged. For almost every writer found in the previous edition, a new biography has been commissioned. Drawn from the very best minds on southern literature and covering the full spectrum of its practitioners, Southern Writers is an indispensable reference book for anyone intrigued by the subject.

Book All the Powers of Earth

Download or read book All the Powers of Earth written by Sidney Blumenthal and published by Simon & Schuster. This book was released on 2020-10-27 with total page 784 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Lincoln’s incredible ascent to power in a world of chaos is newly revealed in this “compelling, original, and elegantly written” (Michael Beschloss, New York Times bestselling author) third volume of the “magisterial” (The New York Times Book Review) Political Life of Abraham Lincoln series, following A Self-Made Man and Wrestling with His Angel. After a period of depression that he would ever find his way to greatness, Lincoln takes on the most powerful demagogue in the country, Stephen Douglas, in the debates for a senate seat. He sidelines the frontrunner William Seward, a former governor and senator for New York, to cinch the new Republican Party’s nomination. All the Powers of Earth is the political story of all time. Lincoln achieves the presidency by force of strategy, of political savvy and determination. This is Abraham Lincoln, who indisputably becomes the greatest president and moral leader in the nation’s history. But he must first build a new political party, brilliantly state the anti-slavery case and overcome shattering defeat to win the presidency. In the years of civil war to follow, he will show mightily that the nation was right to bet on him. He was its preserver, a politician of moral integrity. All the Powers of Earth is “as essential as any political biography is likely to be” and Sidney Bluementhal is “the definitive chronicler of Lincoln’s political career” (Kirkus Reviews, starred review).

Download or read book The Mind of the Master Class written by Elizabeth Fox-Genovese and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2005-10-17 with total page 843 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Mind of the Master Class tells of America's greatest historical tragedy. It presents the slaveholders as men and women, a great many of whom were intelligent, honorable, and pious. It asks how people who were admirable in so many ways could have presided over a social system that proved itself an enormity and inflicted horrors on their slaves. The South had formidable proslavery intellectuals who participated fully in transatlantic debates and boldly challenged an ascendant capitalist ('free-labor') society. Blending classical and Christian traditions, they forged a moral and political philosophy designed to sustain conservative principles in history, political economy, social theory, and theology, while translating them into political action. Even those who judge their way of life most harshly have much to learn from their probing moral and political reflections on their times - and ours - beginning with the virtues and failings of their own society and culture.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Address Delivered at the University of Mississippi: On Behalf of the Board of Trustees, on Commencement Day, June 29, 1866 Looking to the impulsive character of our people, and to the intel lectual power and impassioned eloquence for which our public men have been distinguished, where is there another country where syste matic efforts would not have been made, covertly or openly, to cripple and embarrass the government that had compelled our allegiance, either by involving it in'a war abroad, or in commotions and convulsions at home? And yet it may be affirmed, that notwithstanding the trials to which it would almost appear that we are designedly subjected with a view to drive us to desperation, no such chivalrous fidelity to the terms of surrender has before been exhibited by an entire people and(6) About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
