Book The First Maryland Campaign

Download or read book The First Maryland Campaign written by Bradley Tyler Johnson and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-01-20 with total page 48 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The First Maryland Campaign: An Address by the Brig. Gen'l Bradley T. Johnson, Delivered February 22, 1886, at the Fourth Annual Reunion of the Association of the Maryland Line, at Oratorio Hall, Baltimore, MD Some one has said that the South fought the War of Secession upon the sentimentalities of the Waverly Novels and the Romances of the Cavaliers. Without stopping to analyze that observation, I will say that there was a significant connection by heredity and blood between the actors of the War of the Revolution, and those of the war between the States. Many descendants of leaders of the Revolution in the Northern States sympathized with the South - some of them actually bore arms for the Confederacy. In Maryland not a single historic family that I can recall but was represented in our army by almost all of its arms-bearing youth. Book Confederate Military History Maryland

Download or read book Confederate Military History Maryland written by Brig. Gen. Bradley T. Johnson and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2017-03-06 with total page 250 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The writer of the following sketch does not attempt, in the space assigned him, to give a complete history of the various commands of Maryland, who for four year did gallant and noble service. A faithful record of their names alone would fill the pages of a volume, and to write a history of their marches and battles, their wounds and suffering, their willing sacrifices, would demand more accurate knowledge, more time and more ability than the author of this sketch can command. He trusts that in this brief history which follows he has been able to show that Maryland did her duty to herself and did it nobly. Gen. Bradley T. Johnson, the gallant organizer and leader of the Maryland Line, distinguished in many of the battles of the army of Virginia, one of the most brilliant regimental and brigade commanders under Stonewall Jackson and Robert E. Lee, and for a time in command of division, is the author of the military history of Maryland.

Book excerpt: Long after the Civil War ended, one conflict raged on: the battle to define and shape the war's legacy. Across the Bloody Chasm deftly examines Civil War veterans' commemorative efforts and the concomitant -- and sometimes conflicting -- movement for reconciliation. Though former soldiers from both sides of the war celebrated the history and values of the newly reunited America, a deep divide remained between people in the North and South as to how the country's past should be remembered and the nation's ideals honored. Union soldiers could not forget that their southern counterparts had taken up arms against them, while Confederates maintained that the principles of states' rights and freedom from tyranny aligned with the beliefs and intentions of the founding fathers. Confederate soldiers also challenged northern claims of a moral victory, insisting that slavery had not been the cause of the war, and ferociously resisting the imposition of postwar racial policies. M. Keith Har-ris argues that although veterans remained committed to reconciliation, the sectional sensibilities that influenced the memory of the war left the North and South far from a meaningful accord. Harris's masterful analysis of veteran memory assesses the ideological commitments of a generation of former soldiers, weaving their stories into the larger narrative of the process of national reunification. Through regimental histories, speeches at veterans' gatherings, monument dedications, and war narratives, Harris uncovers how veterans from both sides kept the deadliest war in American history alive in memory at a time when the nation seemed determined to move beyond conflict.
