Download or read book The Last Elephants written by Colin Bell and published by Penguin Random House South Africa. This book was released on 2019-03-01 with total page 596 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Africa-wide Great Elephant Census of 2016 produced shocking findings: a decimated elephant population whose numbers were continuing to plummet. Elephants are killed, on average, every 15–20 minutes – a situation that will see the final demise of these intelligent, extraordinary animals in less than three decades. They are a species in crisis. This magnificent book offers chapters written by the most prominent people in the realm of conservation and wildlife, among them researchers, conservationists, film makers, criminologists, TV personalities and journalists. Photographs have been selected from among Africa’s best wildlife photographers, and the Foreword is provided by Prince William. It is hoped this book will create awareness of the devastating loss of elephant lives in Africa and stem the tide of poaching and hunting; that it will inspire the delegates to CITES to make informed decisions to ensure that all loopholes in the ivory trade are closed; and that countries receiving and using ivory (both legal and poached) – primarily China, Vietnam, Laos and Japan – ban and strenuously police its trade and use within their borders, actively pursuing and arresting syndicate leaders driving the cruel poaching tsunami. This book is also a tribute to the many people who work for the welfare of elephants, particularly those who risk their lives for wildlife each day, often for little or no pay – in particular the field rangers and the anti-poaching teams; and to the many communities around Africa that have elected to work with elephants and not against them. The Last Elephants – is the title prophetic? We hope not, but the signs are worrying.

Book Tourism and Animal Ethics

Download or read book Tourism and Animal Ethics written by David A. Fennell and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2011-12-14 with total page 340 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There is a long history of the involvement of animals for tourism purposes in circuses, zoos, fairs, ecotourism and wildlife tourism, using animals as the prime focus of their experience. The wave of responsibility and sustainability that currently permeates the tourism field is catalyzing deeper moral questions about equity, equality, rights, justice, and values in regards to what constitutes acceptable tourism practice. Tourism and Animal Ethics represents a required extension of the sustainability imperative and environmental theory by providing a critical account of the role that animals play in tourism. This book explores the rich history of animal ethics research that lies outside the field of tourism for the purpose of providing greater theoretical, empirical and conceptual guidance inside the field. It examines historical and current practices of the use of animals in the tourism industry from both in situ to ex situ consumption and production perspectives, identifying a range of ethical issues associated with such use. This detailed examination of current animal ethics theories will be instrumental in determining the rightness or wrongness of these practices, and hence allow tourism practitioners and theorists to think about these issues and practices in a different light, minimizing the impact that the industry has on animals. This text provides an interdisciplinary overview of the moral issues related to the use of animals in tourism, and contains cutting edge research and boxed international case studies throughout. It will appeal to students, academics and researchers interested in Tourism Ethics, Sustainable Tourism and Wildlife Tourism.

Book Reintroduction of Top Order Predators

Download or read book Reintroduction of Top Order Predators written by Matt W. Hayward and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2009-04-13 with total page 477 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Large predators are among the most threatened species on the planet and ways of conserving them in the face of increasing human populations and associated resource requirements are becoming critical. This book draws upon the experiences of some of the world’s foremost large carnivore specialists to discuss the numerous issues associated reintroducing large predators back into their natural habitats. Reviews of internationally renowned reintroduction programs for wolves, European lynx and African wild dog reveal the successes and failures of these actions. Experts on tigers, snow leopards and jaguars contend that there are other conservation options of higher priority that will ensure their security in the long-term. Other experts discuss more theoretical aspects such as whether we know enough about these species to be able to predict their behavioural or ecological response to the reintroduction process. Social, economic, political and genetic considerations are also addressed.
