Book Adding Sodium Hydroxide to Study Metal Removal in a Stream Affected by Acid Mine Drainage Classic Reprint

Download or read book Adding Sodium Hydroxide to Study Metal Removal in a Stream Affected by Acid Mine Drainage Classic Reprint written by Michael C. Amacher and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-17 with total page 30 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Adding Sodium Hydroxide to Study Metal Removal in a Stream Affected by Acid Mine Drainage In anaerobic wetlands no plant communities are needed to treat amd. Sulfur-reducing microorgan isms reduce sulfate to sulfide and precipitate metals. Because metal sulfides are so insoluble, all but very low levels of metals can be removed from the water. The major disadvantage of using anaerobic wetlands is that amd loading rates must be relatively low to avoid exceeding the rate at which the microorganisms can reduce sulfate. Furthermore, anaerobic wetlands are sensitive to temperature because they depend on growth of microorganism populations. Anaerobic wet lands must be insulated to operate during winter in cold climates, and amd loading rates must be reduced during winter to avoid exceeding the system's capac ity to reduce sulfate. Book Remediation Approach for Improving Acid Mine Drainage Conditions Using Slow Release Hydrogen Peroxide Systems

Download or read book Remediation Approach for Improving Acid Mine Drainage Conditions Using Slow Release Hydrogen Peroxide Systems written by Ryan A. Wolbert and published by . This book was released on 2020 with total page 189 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study tested the ability of slow release-hydrogen peroxide (SR-HP) forms to improve acid mine drainage (AMD) conditions by precipitating heavy metals through the release of hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) and alkalinity. Nine column tests (CTs) were conducted to assess the oxidant release kinetics of SR-HP forms manufactured with salt: resin mixing ratios 4:1, 5:1, and 6:1. Mixing ratio 4:1 released oxidant between 21.2-69.1 days, 5:1 released oxidant between 5.0-53.4 days, and 6:1 released oxidant between 7.0-41.4 days. The peak H2O2 release occurred within the initial 48 hours, followed by stabilized H2O2 release rates which ranged from 0.01-1.16 mg/L. CTs using collected AMD show 99.5-100% Fe2+ removal within 15 minutes of SR-HP form interaction. Two field tests were conducted within Monday Creek Watershed in southeastern Ohio through placing SR-HP forms in a constructed trench system along the AMD seep- stream interaction zone. Using the Qseep/Qsite1 ratio, the % improvement found ranged from 12% to 56% total Fe, 9.0 to 26% pH, and from 21% to 34% TDS downstream of the conjunction point, attributed to oxidation and alkalinity increase from SR-HP forms. Results of this study suggested that SR-HP forms can provide a low cost remedial option for AMD-affected streams. A major scale field application study is warranted to further improve and verify the remedial efficacy of SR-HP systems.

Book Acid Mine Drainage in South Africa

Download or read book Acid Mine Drainage in South Africa written by Suvania Naidoo and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-10-13 with total page 137 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This SpringerBrief focuses on Acid Mine Drainage (AMD) in the three basins in the Witwatersrand, South Africa. It provides a background to AMD and its impactsfrom a social science perspective. The South African government and non-governmental organizations’ response to AMD is assessed, as well the socio-economic and developmental effects of AMD. This volume, which is based on the author’s Master’s dissertation at UNISA, involves interviews with a range of experts in the field from government departments, environmental organisations (activists), the private sector (mining), tourism sector and the agricultural sector. The book discusses existing policy documents on AMD and provides recommendations in response to the many socio-economic impacts which have not been fully addressed. A literature review on the global context of AMD is provided. South Africa’s water systems are already severely harmed by climate change, different forms of pollution, and poorly managed sanitation systems. For these reasons, the country is becoming increasingly water-stressed and therefore, water will continue to become much scarcer in the future. As a result of AMD’s continued impact on South Africa’s water systems, as a technical or scientific matter as well as the policy implications for the mining sector, water security and socio-economic sustainability has become a highly contested issue.

Book Management and Mitigation of Acid Mine Drainage in South Africa

Download or read book Management and Mitigation of Acid Mine Drainage in South Africa written by Mujuru, Munyaradzi and published by Africa Institute of South Africa. This book was released on 2017-02-03 with total page 359 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: South Africa is facing the increasing challenge of acid mine drainage (AMD) whose genesis is the country’s mining history, which paid limited attention to post-mining mine site management. In mineral resource-rich Africa, this has emerged as one of the most daunting challenges of our time. South Africa has been bold in its approach to mitigating this problem, although the challenge is multi-faceted. On a positive note, substantial research has been conducted to confront the challenge. However, thus far, the research has been largely fragmented. This book builds on the work that has been done, but also provides a refreshing multi-disciplinary approach that is useful in addressing the AMD challenges that South Africa and the continent face. Whilst addressing the problem as a scientific and engineering challenge, the book also exposes the economic, policy and legal challenges involved in addressing the problem. The book concludes, quite uniquely, that AMD is an opportunity that can be used by South Africa and Africa to solve problems, such as acute water shortage, as well as mineral recovery operations.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Aldo Leopold, father of the "land ethic," once said, "The time has come for science to busy itself with the earth itself. The first step is to reconstruct a sample of what we had to begin with." The concept he expressedâ€"restorationâ€"is defined in this comprehensive new volume that examines the prospects for repairing the damage society has done to the nation's aquatic resources: lakes, rivers and streams, and wetlands. Restoration of Aquatic Ecosystems outlines a national strategy for aquatic restoration, with practical recommendations, and features case studies of aquatic restoration activities around the country. The committee examines: Key concepts and techniques used in restoration. Common factors in successful restoration efforts. Threats to the health of the nation's aquatic ecosystems. Approaches to evaluation before, during, and after a restoration project. The emerging specialties of restoration and landscape ecology.

Book Extractive Metallurgy of Niobium

Download or read book Extractive Metallurgy of Niobium written by A.K. Suri and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-11-13 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The growth and development witnessed today in modern science, engineering, and technology owes a heavy debt to the rare, refractory, and reactive metals group, of which niobium is a member. Extractive Metallurgy of Niobium presents a vivid account of the metal through its comprehensive discussions of properties and applications, resources and resource processing, chemical processing and compound preparation, metal extraction, and refining and consolidation. Typical flow sheets adopted in some leading niobium-producing countries for the beneficiation of various niobium sources are presented, and various chemical processes for producing pure forms of niobium intermediates such as chloride, fluoride, and oxide are discussed. The book also explains how to liberate the metal from its intermediates and describes the physico-chemical principles involved. It is an excellent reference for chemical metallurgists, hydrometallurgists, extraction and process metallurgists, and minerals processors. It is also valuable to a wide variety of scientists, engineers, technologists, and students interested in the topic.
