Book Adaptive Wavelet Methods for Variational Formulations of Nonlinear Elliptic PDEs on Tensor Product Domains

Download or read book Adaptive Wavelet Methods for Variational Formulations of Nonlinear Elliptic PDEs on Tensor Product Domains written by Roland Pabel and published by Logos Verlag Berlin GmbH. This book was released on 2015-09-30 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This thesis is concerned with the numerical solution of boundary value problems (BVPs) governed by nonlinear elliptic partial differential equations (PDEs). To iteratively solve such BVPs, it is of primal importance to develop efficient schemes that guarantee convergence of the numerically approximated PDE solutions towards the exact solution. The new adaptive wavelet theory guarantees convergence of adaptive schemes with fixed approximation rates. Furthermore, optimal, i.e., linear, complexity estimates of such adaptive solution methods have been established. These achievements are possible since wavelets allow for a completely new perspective to attack BVPs: namely, to represent PDEs in their original infinite dimensional realm. Wavelets in this context represent function bases with special analytical properties, e.g., the wavelets considered herein are piecewise polynomials, have compact support and norm equivalences between certain function spaces and the $ell_2$ sequence spaces of expansion coefficients exist. This theoretical framework is implemented in the course of this thesis in a truly dimensionally unrestricted adaptive wavelet program code, which allows one to harness the proven theoretical results for the first time when numerically solving the above mentioned BVPs. Numerical studies of 2D and 3D PDEs and BVPs demonstrate the feasibility and performance of the developed schemes. The BVPs are solved using an adaptive Uzawa algorithm, which requires repeated solution of nonlinear PDE sub-problems. This thesis presents for the first time a numerically competitive implementation of a new theoretical paradigm to solve nonlinear elliptic PDEs in arbitrary space dimensions with a complete convergence and complexity theory.

Book Adaptive Wavelet Discretization of Tensor Products in H Tucker Format

Download or read book Adaptive Wavelet Discretization of Tensor Products in H Tucker Format written by Mazen Ali and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page 114 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "In previous work, the solution to a system of coupled parabolic PDEs, modeling the price of a CDO, was approximated numerically. Due to the nature of the problem, the system involved a large number of equations such that the parameters cannot be stored explicitly. The authors combined the data sparse H-Tucker storage format with the Galerkin method to approximate the solution, using wavelets for the space discretization together with time stepping (Method of Lines). The aforementioned approximation is of the linear kind, i.e., using a nonadaptive method. In this work, three methods for solving such systems adaptively are presented, together with a convergence and complexity analysis. The best choice of the method among the three, in general, depends on the particular application. It is shown that (quasi- )optimality is not achieved in the classical sense for adaptive methods, since it, in general, relies on the H-Tucker structure."--Abstract, page iii.

Recently developed adaptive methods are also covered and each scheme is complemented with numerical results , exercises, and corresponding software.

Book Operator Adapted Wavelets Fast Solvers and Numerical Homogenization

Download or read book Operator Adapted Wavelets Fast Solvers and Numerical Homogenization written by Houman Owhadi and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2019-10-24 with total page 491 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although numerical approximation and statistical inference are traditionally covered as entirely separate subjects, they are intimately connected through the common purpose of making estimations with partial information. This book explores these connections from a game and decision theoretic perspective, showing how they constitute a pathway to developing simple and general methods for solving fundamental problems in both areas. It illustrates these interplays by addressing problems related to numerical homogenization, operator adapted wavelets, fast solvers, and Gaussian processes. This perspective reveals much of their essential anatomy and greatly facilitates advances in these areas, thereby appearing to establish a general principle for guiding the process of scientific discovery. This book is designed for graduate students, researchers, and engineers in mathematics, applied mathematics, and computer science, and particularly researchers interested in drawing on and developing this interface between approximation, inference, and learning.

Book Numerical Analysis of Wavelet Methods

Download or read book Numerical Analysis of Wavelet Methods written by A. Cohen and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2003-04-29 with total page 357 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since their introduction in the 1980's, wavelets have become a powerful tool in mathematical analysis, with applications such as image compression, statistical estimation and numerical simulation of partial differential equations. One of their main attractive features is the ability to accurately represent fairly general functions with a small number of adaptively chosen wavelet coefficients, as well as to characterize the smoothness of such functions from the numerical behaviour of these coefficients. The theoretical pillar that underlies such properties involves approximation theory and function spaces, and plays a pivotal role in the analysis of wavelet-based numerical methods. This book offers a self-contained treatment of wavelets, which includes this theoretical pillar and it applications to the numerical treatment of partial differential equations. Its key features are:1. Self-contained introduction to wavelet bases and related numerical algorithms, from the simplest examples to the most numerically useful general constructions.2. Full treatment of the theoretical foundations that are crucial for the analysisof wavelets and other related multiscale methods : function spaces, linear and nonlinear approximation, interpolation theory.3. Applications of these concepts to the numerical treatment of partial differential equations : multilevel preconditioning, sparse approximations of differential and integral operators, adaptive discretization strategies.

Book Advances in Mathematical Fluid Mechanics

Download or read book Advances in Mathematical Fluid Mechanics written by Josef Malek and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book consists of six survey contributions that are focused on several open problems of theoretical fluid mechanics both for incompressible and compressible fluids. The first article "Viscous flows in Besov spaces" by M area Cannone ad dresses the problem of global existence of a uniquely defined solution to the three-dimensional Navier-Stokes equations for incompressible fluids. Among others the following topics are intensively treated in this contribution: (i) the systematic description of the spaces of initial conditions for which there exists a unique local (in time) solution or a unique global solution for small data, (ii) the existence of forward self-similar solutions, (iii) the relation of these results to Leray's weak solutions and backward self-similar solutions, (iv) the extension of the results to further nonlinear evolutionary problems. Particular attention is paid to the critical spaces that are invariant under the self-similar transform. For sufficiently small Reynolds numbers, the conditional stability in the sense of Lyapunov is also studied. The article is endowed by interesting personal and historical comments and an exhaustive bibliography that gives the reader a complete picture about available literature. The papers "The dynamical system approach to the Navier-Stokes equa tions for compressible fluids" by Eduard Feireisl, and "Asymptotic problems and compressible-incompressible limits" by Nader Masmoudi are devoted to the global (in time) properties of solutions to the Navier-Stokes equa and three tions for compressible fluids. The global (in time) analysis of two dimensional motions of compressible fluids were left open for many years.

Book Extraction of Quantifiable Information from Complex Systems

Download or read book Extraction of Quantifiable Information from Complex Systems written by Stephan Dahlke and published by Springer. This book was released on 2014-11-13 with total page 446 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In April 2007, the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) approved the Priority Program 1324 “Mathematical Methods for Extracting Quantifiable Information from Complex Systems.” This volume presents a comprehensive overview of the most important results obtained over the course of the program. Mathematical models of complex systems provide the foundation for further technological developments in science, engineering and computational finance. Motivated by the trend toward steadily increasing computer power, ever more realistic models have been developed in recent years. These models have also become increasingly complex, and their numerical treatment poses serious challenges. Recent developments in mathematics suggest that, in the long run, much more powerful numerical solution strategies could be derived if the interconnections between the different fields of research were systematically exploited at a conceptual level. Accordingly, a deeper understanding of the mathematical foundations as well as the development of new and efficient numerical algorithms were among the main goals of this Priority Program. The treatment of high-dimensional systems is clearly one of the most challenging tasks in applied mathematics today. Since the problem of high-dimensionality appears in many fields of application, the above-mentioned synergy and cross-fertilization effects were expected to make a great impact. To be truly successful, the following issues had to be kept in mind: theoretical research and practical applications had to be developed hand in hand; moreover, it has proven necessary to combine different fields of mathematics, such as numerical analysis and computational stochastics. To keep the whole program sufficiently focused, we concentrated on specific but related fields of application that share common characteristics and as such, they allowed us to use closely related approaches.

Book Parallel in Time Integration Methods

Download or read book Parallel in Time Integration Methods written by Benjamin Ong and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2021-08-24 with total page 134 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume includes contributions from the 9th Parallel-in-Time (PinT) workshop, an annual gathering devoted to the field of time-parallel methods, aiming to adapt existing computer models to next-generation machines by adding a new dimension of scalability. As the latest supercomputers advance in microprocessing ability, they require new mathematical algorithms in order to fully realize their potential for complex systems. The use of parallel-in-time methods will provide dramatically faster simulations in many important areas, including biomedical (e.g., heart modeling), computational fluid dynamics (e.g., aerodynamics and weather prediction), and machine learning applications. Computational and applied mathematics is crucial to this progress, as it requires advanced methodologies from the theory of partial differential equations in a functional analytic setting, numerical discretization and integration, convergence analyses of iterative methods, and the development and implementation of new parallel algorithms. Therefore, the workshop seeks to bring together an interdisciplinary group of experts across these fields to disseminate cutting-edge research and facilitate discussions on parallel time integration methods.

Book Sparse Grids and Applications Munich 2012

Download or read book Sparse Grids and Applications Munich 2012 written by Jochen Garcke and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2014-04-11 with total page 345 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sparse grids have gained increasing interest in recent years for the numerical treatment of high-dimensional problems. Whereas classical numerical discretization schemes fail in more than three or four dimensions, sparse grids make it possible to overcome the “curse” of dimensionality to some degree, extending the number of dimensions that can be dealt with. This volume of LNCSE collects the papers from the proceedings of the second workshop on sparse grids and applications, demonstrating once again the importance of this numerical discretization scheme. The selected articles present recent advances on the numerical analysis of sparse grids as well as efficient data structures, and the range of applications extends to uncertainty quantification settings and clustering, to name but a few examples.
