Book excerpt: The use of wireless communications is increasing and will continue growing, not only for personal communications but also for machine-to-machine applications. Therefore, the use of physical resources for wireless communications, i.e., time and frequency, need to be optimized to maximize the communication link efficiency and to reduce the "cost" of moving bits over the air. The joint use of ultra wideband (UWB) and cognitive radio (CR) has been identified as a solution to maximize the use of physical resources for wireless communications and to minimize the cost associated with its transfer. UWB and CR, in conjunction with software defined radio receivers, open up a whole new spectrum of possibilities to re-think the design and implementation of wireless communications. In that sense, the setting of the system parameters can become less rigid and can attempt to adapt to different scenarios with the goal to maximize the communication link efficiency. This dissertation presents a study on how to realize a cognitive Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM) wireless system with the goal of maximizing the utilization of physical resources. We first parameterize the OFDM system to a limited set of degrees of freedom, and then we identify the performance of a non-ideal OFDM system. The non-idealities that we consider are imperfections at the receiver, such as timing errors, residual frequency error and imperfect channel estimation, as well as channel perturbations such as inter-symbol interference (ISI) from a channel delay spread larger than the cyclic prefix (CP) or Doppler stemming from the motion of the transmitter and/or receiver. th the parameterization of the OFDM system and the performance characterization as a function of different parameters, we present how the cognitive OFDM receiver will select the set of parameters that maximize the communication link efficiency. These parameters are the position, at the receiver, of the DFT window, the pilot structure, the CP duration, and the OFDM symbol duration.

Thus, designing an UWB communication system requires the understanding of how excess bandwidth and very low transmitted powers can be used jointly to provide a reliable radio link. UWB offers systems transceiver potential for very simple implementations. Comparison between UWB and traditional narrow-band systems highlights the following features: Large bandwidth enables very fine time-space resolution for accurate lo- tion of the UWB nodes and for distributing network time stamps. Very short pulses are effectively counter-fighting the channel effect in very dense multipath environments. Data rate (number of pulses transmitted per bit) can be traded with power emission control and distance coverage. Very low power density leads to low probability of signal detection and adds security for all the layers of the communication stack. Very low power density is obtained through radio regulation emission masks; UWB systems are suitable for coexistence with already deployed narrow-band systems.

These offsets also known as timing jitter were shown to degrade the performance of the two forms of UWB systems impulse radio and orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM)-based UWB. It was shown that for impulse radio, timing jitter distorts the correlation property of the transmitted signal and the resulting performance loss is proportional to the root-mean-square (RMS) value of the timing jitter. For the OFDM-based UWB, timing jitter introduced inter-channel interference (ICI) and the performance loss was dependent on the product of the bandwidth and the RMS of the timing jitter. A number of techniques were proposed for mitigating the performance degradation in each form of UWB. Specifically, for impulse radio, the methods of pulse shaping and sample averaging were provided, whereas for OFDM-based UWB, oversampling and adaptive modulation were given. Through analysis and simulation, it was shown that substantial gain in signal power-to-noise ratio can be achieved using these jitter-reduction methods.

Book excerpt: Ultra-wideband (UWB) communications has emerged as a promising technology for high data rate wireless personal area networks (WPANs). Several proposals for UWB-based WPANs have been made. One widely popular proposal is based on multi-channel OFDM. This proposal was recently standardized by European Computer Manufacturers Association (ECMA). In this dissertation, we address several important aspects that impact the performance of OFDM-based UWB systems. First, we propose an interference management distributed reservation protocol (IMDRP) for these communications. IM-DRP aims at reducing interference between uncooperative beacon groups that operate simultaneously over the same area. We then integrate IM-DRP into the design of a rate adaptation strategy that exploits the multi-rate capability of OFDM-based UWB systems. Besides maintaining a target packet error rate, our proposed strategy attempts to reduce the required reservation time over a link, hence allowing more links to be concurrently activated. Second, we propose a novel overhearing-aware joint routing and rate selection (ORRS) scheme. For a given source-destination pair, ORRS aims at selecting a path and its transmission rates that achieve the minimum channel reservation time, leading to low blocking rate for prospective reservations and high network throughput. At the same time, ORRS takes advantage of packet overhearing, a typical characteristic of broadcast communications. Finally, we propose a novel resource utilization mechanism (RUM) for improving the throughput in multi-rate UWB-based WPANs. RUM exploits opportunistic-relaying and time-spreading techniques to improve link reliability and increase the transmission rate, and hence network throughput. Simulation results indicate that our proposed protocols and schemes achieve significant throughput improvement compared with other protocols.
