Book Latin Books and the Eastern Orthodox Clerical Elite in Kiev 1632 1780

Download or read book Latin Books and the Eastern Orthodox Clerical Elite in Kiev 1632 1780 written by Liudmila V. Charipova and published by Manchester University Press. This book was released on 2006-09-19 with total page 284 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Founded in 1632, the library of the Kiev Mohyla Academy went up in flames in 1780. Encompassing predominantly humanist, scholastic and homiletic titles in Latin yet placed in a heartland of Eastern Orthodox territories, the library was something of an anomaly for its time, offering East Slavic intellectuals a comprehensive introduction to Western printed matter. Those books brought along with them not only a new pattern of knowledge, but also an awareness of the diversity and multiplicity of views which the educated could hold.

Book The Invention of the Emblem Book and the Transmission of Knowledge ca 1510 1610

Download or read book The Invention of the Emblem Book and the Transmission of Knowledge ca 1510 1610 written by Karl A.E. Enenkel and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2019-02-04 with total page 499 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study reexamines the invention of the emblem book and discusses the novel textual and pictorial means that applied to the task of transmitting knowledge. It offers a fresh analysis of Alciato’s Emblematum liber, focusing on his poetics of the emblem, and on how he actually construed emblems. It demonstrates that the “father of emblematics” had vernacular forebears, most importantly Johann von Schwarzenberg who composed two illustrated emblem books between 1510 and 1520. The study sheds light on the early development of the Latin emblem book 1531–1610, with special emphasis on the invention of the emblematic commentary, on natural history, and on advanced methods of conveying emblematic knowledge, from Junius to Vaenius.

Book Prometheus in the Nineteenth Century

Download or read book Prometheus in the Nineteenth Century written by Caroline Corbeau-Parsons and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-12-02 with total page 355 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "On Zeus' order, Prometheus was chained to Mount Caucasus where, every day, he was to endure his liver being devoured by a bird of prey - his punishment for bringing fire to mankind. Through the impulse of Goethe, his fortune went through radical changes: the Titan, originally perceived as a trickster, was established both as a creator and a rebel freed from guilt, and he became a mask for the Romantic artist. This cross-disciplinary study, encompassing literature, the history of art, and music, examines the constitution of the Prometheus myth and the revolution it underwent in 19th-century Europe. It leads to the Symbolist period - which witnessed the coronation of the Titan as a prism for the total work of art - and aims to re-establish the importance of Prometheus amongst other major Symbolist figures such as Orpheus."
