Book Effects of an Amine Anti Stripping Agent on Moisture Susceptibility of Sasobit and Aspha Min Mixes by Surface Free Energy Analysis

Download or read book Effects of an Amine Anti Stripping Agent on Moisture Susceptibility of Sasobit and Aspha Min Mixes by Surface Free Energy Analysis written by Aravinda Buddhala and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page 9 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Warm mix asphalt (WMA) is a fairly recent technology developed primarily to address issues such as high vapor emissions and high energy costs associated with the traditional hot mix asphalt (HMA) paving. Although the WMA is becoming a popular paving technology through field and laboratory evaluations, many researchers and transportation personnel are concerned about its moisture resistance. The present study analyzes the free energy of adhesion or wetting ability between eight different aggregates and an asphalt binder modified with varying dosages of two warm mix additives, namely Sasobit and Aspha-Min. Sasobit showed a maximum of 20.9 % and an average of 12.8 % increase in the free energy of adhesion in dry condition. The adhesion in the presence of moisture, referred to as free energy of reduction, was also evaluated to understand the moisture susceptibility of the WMA. The lower the free energy of reduction, the lower the asphalt binder's tendency to de-bond from aggregates in the presence of moisture. A maximum of 20.5 % and an average of 13.2 % decrease in the free energy of reduction were observed for asphalt binder with 3 % Sasobit. However, Aspha-Min did not exhibit any significant effect on any of the surface properties. One amine-based anti-stripping agent, AD-here HP Plus, is studied to evaluate its effect on adhesion and moisture susceptibility of the WMA. While its performance as an anti-stripping agent was good on the plain asphalt binder, AD-here HP Plus did not improve the adhesion of the selected binder modified with WMA additives either in dry or wet condition. The free energy of adhesion in wet and dry conditions showed either detrimental or no effect with selected aggregates, suggesting a negative or no influence of AD-here HP Plus on the WMA additive-modified binder.

Book Field Trials of Asphalt Rubber Hot Mix in Virginia

Download or read book Field Trials of Asphalt Rubber Hot Mix in Virginia written by G. W. Maupin and published by . This book was released on 1995 with total page 42 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Four test sections using asphalt rubber hot mix were placed in Virginia during the period of 1990 through 1993. The purpose of these installations was to familiarize both contractors and Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) personnel with the construction process and compare the performance of different types of mixes containing ground tire rubber. The MacDonald and Rouse processes, both wet processes, were used successfully. Densegraded surface mixes, a gap-graded surface mix, and a base mix were manufactured. A stress absorbing membrane interlayer was also used on one project in an attempt to deter or eliminate a variety of types of cracking. The asphalt rubber mixes have performed as well as the conventional mixes over the short term. More evaluation time is needed to determine if the long-term performance of the asphalt rubber mixes is superior to that of the conventional mixes. The cost of the asphalt rubber mixes was 64 to 102 percent more than that of the conventional mixes; however, this cost would probably decrease if substantial quantities were placed. VDOT has the necessary experience to contract placement of asphalt rubber mixes if the suspended ISTEA mandate is effected.

Book Effect of Antistrip Additives on Surface Free Energy Characteristics of Asphalt Binders for Moisture Induced Damage Potential

Download or read book Effect of Antistrip Additives on Surface Free Energy Characteristics of Asphalt Binders for Moisture Induced Damage Potential written by NM. Wasiuddin and published by . This book was released on 2007 with total page 9 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this study, the effect of antistrip additives on asphalt binders was evaluated by both laboratory tests and a proposed chemical model of asphalt binder based on the surface free energy characteristics. Two performance graded asphalt binders, namely, PG 64-22 and PG 70-28 and two amine-based liquid antistrip additives, namely, AD-Here HP Plus and Redicote E-6 were evaluated at different percentages (0.25 %, 0.75 %, and 1.5 %) It was found that 1.5 %AD-Here HP Plus and 1.5 % Redicote E-6 increased the total SFE of PG 64-22 by 67 % and 208 %, respectively. Also, the acid components of PG 64-22 and PG 70-28 are 2.9 dyne/cm and 2.5 dyne/cm, respectively, whereas, the corresponding base components are 0.4 dyne/cm for both. With the addition of 1.5 %.Redicote E-6 in PG 64-22, the acid component of the binder reduced by 92 % and the base component of the binder increased by 1141 %.

Book Installation and Early Performance of a Field Test Section of Asphalt Rubber Concrete

Download or read book Installation and Early Performance of a Field Test Section of Asphalt Rubber Concrete written by G. W. Maupin and published by . This book was released on 1991 with total page 32 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Asphalt rubber, which is produced by reacting asphalt cement and crumb rubber, is claimed to increase fatigue life and reduce rutting of asphalt concrete; however, the service life must be increased significantly to offset the additional coast of adding the rubber. In order to assess the performance of asphalt rubber mixtures and how effectively they can be used in construction, text sections of asphalt concrete surface courses using either asphalt rubber binder or the conventional binder were installed on a heavily traveled highway in Northern Virginia. Special equipment was required to blend the asphalt cement and crumb rubber; however, the production of the mixture and construction of the test sections were accomplished with minimal problems. Various laboratory tests including Marshall, gyratory shear, creep, resilient modulus, indirect tensile strength, and stripping were used to evaluate the mixtures in the laboratory. The results indicated that the asphalt rubber mixtures were more susceptible to permanent deformation than the same mixtures without rubber; however, the conventional temperature at which the mixtures were compacted and tested with the gyratory shear machine may not have presented a true estimate of performance because pavement deformation occurs at lower temperatures. Friction numbers of one section of asphalt rubber mixture were significantly lower at a 95 percent confidence level than friction numbers of the other asphalt rubber section, possibly the result of the pavement surface being filled by soil from a nearby construction project. However, there was no difference at a 95 percent confidence level between the average friction values of the control and asphalt rubber sections. Surveys of pavement performance, measurements of rut depth, and friction tests will be conducted periodically, and a final report will be published June 30,1994.

Book Characterization of Thermal Degradation of Liquid Amine Anti Strip Additives in Asphalt Binders Due to RTFO and PAV Aging

Download or read book Characterization of Thermal Degradation of Liquid Amine Anti Strip Additives in Asphalt Binders Due to RTFO and PAV Aging written by Nazimuddin M. Wasiuddin and published by . This book was released on 2007 with total page 8 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this study, thermal degradation of amine-based liquid anti-strip additives was evaluated due to RTFO-aging and PAV-aging according to AASHTO T 240 and AASHTO R 28 test methods, respectively. The surface free energy (SFE) characteristics of asphalt binders before and after aging were used as a tool for this evaluation. Two asphalt binders, namely PG 64-22 and PG 70-28, and two anti-strip additives, namely AD-Here HP Plus and Redicote E-6, were evaluated. It was observed for 0.75 % AD-Here HP Plus in PG 64-22, mixing at 163°C is more effective than mixing at 145°C with respect to increase in SFE. Also, both RTFO and PAV-aging decrease the total SFE of asphalt binders; both the aging processes are more effective in PG 64-22. In addition, the beneficial effect of anti-strip additives in acid-base characteristics of asphalt binders is severely reduced by RTFO and PAV-aging. Finally, the chemical model of asphalt binder, proposed by Wasiuddin , was expanded to include the SFE characteristics of asphalt binders due to aging.
