Download or read book Actors and American Culture 1880 1920 written by Benjamin McArthur and published by University of Iowa Press. This book was released on 2000 with total page 308 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The forty years 1880 to 1920 marked the golden age of the American theatre as a national institution, a time when actors moved from being players outside the boundaries of respectable society to being significant figures in the social landscape. As the only book that provides an overview of the late nineteenth- and early twentieth-century theatre, Actors and American Culture is also the only study of the legitimate stage that overtly attempts to connect actors and their work to the wider aspects of American life.

Book Asian American Actors

Download or read book Asian American Actors written by Joann Faung Jean Lee and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2000-08-15 with total page 236 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The acting profession is increasingly drawing more and more actors of Asian descent. Yet, even with the success of television programs (Martial Law), films (Mulan), and even Broadway plays (Miss Saigon) that include Asian characters, there are still limited roles for these actors. In the past, Asian characters like Charlie Chan and Fu Manchu were played by non-Asian actors in makeup. Many of the roles available for Asians today tend to be stereotypical: kung-fu sidekicks, emasculated or gang-member males, sexually accessible females, comic characters with a poor command of English. Seldom are Asian actors cast in race-neutral roles. Despite these obstacles, many excellent Asian actors continue to seek their places on screen and stage. This analysis of Asian American opportunities and experiences in the acting profession features the narratives of both aspiring and established Asian-American actors, providing a detailed examination of the opportunities, prejudices, and fears they face and the goals they set for themselves. The book covers the insights of both New York and Hollywood based actors, both the well known and the up-and-coming, and includes photographs, bibliography and index.

Book Famous Actors of the Day in America

Download or read book Famous Actors of the Day in America written by Lewis Clinton Strang and published by . This book was released on 1899 with total page 416 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Famous Actors," as a companion volume to "Famous Actresses," follows the general plan of that book. The criticisms and estimates of the different players' abilities, except in cases where credit is given, are the author's own. The biographical facts, interviews, and anecdotes were obtained from various sources. They have in all cases been carefully verified, and the imaginings of the press agent have been scrupulously ruled out. In selecting the list of persons to be considered in the work, those actors most prominent on the American stage today were given the preference, and consequently it was found necessary to omit a number whose past achievements give them high rank in their profession. - v. 1 Preface.

Book Native American Movie Actors

Download or read book Native American Movie Actors written by E. Dennis King and published by Dorrance Publishing. This book was released on 2023-05-23 with total page 280 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: About the Book Native American Movie Actors honors those courageously infamous, brave unsung Native Americans who reenacted in films and emphasizes their plight to preserve the sacred land of their inheritance while displaying the beauty and grandeur of their homeland. Many Hollywood Western movies used hundreds of local Native American people to create box-office hits. Yet the faces of these Native Americans, their riding skills, and “War Cries,” that contributed to their success never received the proper credit they deserved. E. Dennis King reviews the history of filmmaking with Native American actors as well as the beginning of Western moviemaking in Utah. Through an in-depth look at the history and struggle of the Native American actors, he brings to life the immense talent of their work and the beautiful landscape of their homeland.
