Book excerpt: The Mississippi Freedom Democratic Party (MFDP)...gives us some of our most inspiring examples of grassroots leaders and some profound lessons about the limits of mid-twentieth-century liberalism. -Prof. Charles M. Payne, author I've Got the Light of Freedom: The Organizing Tradition in the Mississippi Civil Rights Movement. This powerful account of the rise and fall of the Mississippi Freedom Democratic Party (MFDP) is essential reading, both for those who want to understand what happened to the 1960s civil rights movement in the Deep South and the nation, and for those active today to bring freedom, equality and justice to the United States. It is especially relevant in this period of widespread discussion of racism in America. MFDP sought to replace the racist "regulars" of the Mississippi Democratic Party with a Black-led, movement informed, Democratic Party. It emerged from a parallel organizing process involving young African-American organizers and activists, and their generational elders. It invited both poor, formally illiterate, and middle-class Black Mississippians into leadership positions. The Politics of Change carefully analyzes the status quo forces of cooptation and marginalization with which social change efforts must contend. Equally important, it examines internal weaknesses within organizations that must be overcome to achieve significant social change. Today, when people talk about the racial integration of the political process in Mississippi, they summarize what happened in four words: Mississippi Freedom Democratic Party.

Book For a Voice and the Vote

Download or read book For a Voice and the Vote written by Lisa Anderson Todd and published by University Press of Kentucky. This book was released on 2015-01-19 with total page 468 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the summer of 1964, hundreds of American college students descended on Mississippi to help the state's African American citizens register to vote. Student organizers, volunteers, and community members canvassed black neighborhoods to organize the Mississippi Freedom Democratic Party (MFDP), a group that sought to give a voice to black Mississippians and demonstrate their will to vote in the face of terror and intimidation. In For a Voice and the Vote, author Lisa Anderson Todd gives a fascinating insider's account of her experience volunteering in Greenville, Mississippi, during Freedom Summer, when she participated in organizing the MFDP. Innovative and integrated, the party provided political education, ran candidates for office, and offered participation in local and statewide meetings for blacks who were denied the vote. For Todd, it was an exciting, dangerous, and life-changing experience. Offering the first full account of the group's five days in Atlantic City, the book draws on primary sources, oral histories, and the author's personal interviews of individuals who were supporters of the MFDP in 1964.

Book I ve Got the Light of Freedom

Download or read book I ve Got the Light of Freedom written by Charles M. Payne and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 1995 with total page 570 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This momentous work offers a groundbreaking history of the early civil rights movement in the South. Using wide-ranging archival work and extensive interviews with movement participants, Charles Payne uncovers a chapter of American social history forged locally, in places like Greenwood, Mississippi, where countless unsung African Americans risked their lives for the freedom struggle. The leaders were ordinary women and men--sharecroppers, domestics, high school students, beauticians, independent farmers--committed to organizing the civil rights struggle house by house, block by block, relationship by relationship. Payne brilliantly brings to life the tradition of grassroots African American activism, long practiced yet poorly understood. Payne overturns familiar ideas about community activism in the 1960s. The young organizers who were the engines of change in the state were not following any charismatic national leader. Far from being a complete break with the past, their work was based directly on the work of an older generation of activists, people like Ella Baker, Septima Clark, Amzie Moore, Medgar Evers, Aaron Henry. These leaders set the standards of courage against which young organizers judged themselves; they served as models of activism that balanced humanism with militance. While historians have commonly portrayed the movement leadership as male, ministerial, and well-educated, Payne finds that organizers in Mississippi and elsewhere in the most dangerous parts of the South looked for leadership to working-class rural Blacks, and especially to women. Payne also finds that Black churches, typically portrayed as frontrunners in the civil rights struggle, were in fact late supporters of the movement.

Book excerpt: During the summer of 1964, a presidential election year, SNCC (Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee) sent volunteers into Mississippi to expand black voter registration in the state, to organize a legally constituted Freedom Democratic Party that would challenge the whites-only Mississippi Democratic party, to establish freedom schools to teach reading and math to black children, and to open community centers where individuals could obtain legal and medical assistance. 800 students gathered for a week-long orientation session at Western College for Women in Oxford, Ohio, that June. They were mostly white and young, with an average age of 21. Letters from Mississippi is a collection of moving, personal letters written by volunteers of the summer.
