Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Photobiology - the science of light and life - begins with basic principles and the physics of light and continues with general photobiological research methods, such as generation of light, measurement of light, and action spectroscopy. In an interdisciplinary way, it then treats how organisms tune their pigments and structures to the wavelength components of light, and how light is registered by organisms. Then follow various examples of photobiological phenomena: the design of the compound eye in relation to the properties of light, phototoxicity, photobiology of the human skin and of vitamin D, photomorphogenesis, photoperiodism, the setting of the biological clock by light, and bioluminescence. A final chapter is devoted to teaching experiments and demonstrations in photobiology. This book encompasses topics from a diverse array of traditional disciplines: physics, biochemistry, medicine, zoology, botany, microbiology, etc., and makes different aspects of photobiology accessible to experts in all these areas as well as to the novice.

Book Disinfection Efficiency and Dose Measurement of Polychromatic UV Light

Download or read book Disinfection Efficiency and Dose Measurement of Polychromatic UV Light written by Karl G. Linden and published by IWA Publishing. This book was released on 2004-01-01 with total page 140 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There is currently intense interest in the use of ultraviolet technology for helping to meet future regulations relating to improved microbial inactivation and decreased disinfection byproducts (DBPs). Much of this interest has been fueled by recent research indicating the effectiveness of UV technologies for the inactivation of Cryptosporidium. This scientific discovery, combined with proposed regulations concerning DBPs in the United States, has resulted in a need to evaluate the feasibility and effectiveness of UV irradiation for use as a disinfectant for drinking water. The objectives of this project were to:(1) develop and evaluate physical, chemical, and biological methods for calculating effective germicidal UV dose from medium-pressure (MP) and Pulsed-UV (P-UV) lamps;(2) establish a UV dose/log inactivation relationship for specific bacterial and viral indicators for MP and P-UV lamps;(3) determine the extent of photoreactivation and dark repair of heterotrophic bacteria after treatment by MP and P-UV lamps; and(4) compare the ability of MP and P-UV lamps to inactivate Cryptosporidium. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Almost all of the breakthroughs in understanding the atmospherehave been initiated by field observations, using a range ofinstrumental techniques. Developing or deploying instruments tomake further observations demands a thorough understanding of thechemical and spectroscopic principles on which such measurementsdepend. Written as an authoritative guide to the techniques of instrumentalmeasurement for the atmospheric scientist, research student orundergraduate, Analytical Techniques for Atmospheric Measurementfocuses on the instruments used to make real time measurements ofatmospheric gas and aerosol composition. Topics covered include howthey work, their strengths and weaknesses for a particular task, the platforms on which they have been deployed and how they arecalibrated. It explains the fundamental principles upon which theinstrumental techniques are based (ie what property of a moleculecan be exploited to enable its detection), what limits instrumentalsensitivity and accuracy, and the information that can be gainedfrom their use.

Book Beyond the Visible

  • Publisher : Helsingin yliopisto
  • Release : 2012-11-02
  • ISBN : 952108362X
  • Pages : 210 pages

Download or read book Beyond the Visible written by Pedro J. Aphalo and published by Helsingin yliopisto. This book was released on 2012-11-02 with total page 210 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Beyond the Visible: A handbook of best practice in plant UV photobiology presents methods for research on the responses of plants to ultraviolet (UV) radiation. The knowledge needed to make informed decisions about manipulation and quantification of UV radiation is summarized. Practical recommendations for obtaining reliable and relevant data and interpretations are given. The handbook covers research both on terrestrial and aquatic plants and it deals with experimentation on ecological, eco-physiological and physiological questions. The handbook includes 115 figures, mostly in colour, 19 tables and 12 text boxes. It is the result of the activities of COST action FA0906 "UV4growth", and it includes contributions by 17 authors. From the foreword by Dr. Marcel A. K. Jansen: This book ... is an important contribution towards such sound experimental design, promoting both "good practice" in UV-B manipulation, as well as "standardisation" of methodologies. Writing an authoritative book that will steer experimental approaches over the coming years, can not easily be done by an individual, but rather requires the concerted effort of a team of expert scientists. ... This is surely an excellent example of a concerted, Europeanwide activity that will boost the plant UV-B research field in Europe and beyond, for years to come.
