Seychelles Spencer—Chelly to her friends—is the resident bombshell at The Rosewood Academy for Academic Excellence; Westwood boys want her and Rosewood girls want to be her. But being the popular girl isn’t everything it’s cracked up to be, especially when that girl is all an act. Oh, she’s not exactly lying about who she is, it’s just that the confident, outgoing exterior is quite different from the girl inside. Not that it’s ever been a problem for Chelly. Until now. Because now that she sees her friends settling down with boyfriends, she’s decided she no longer wants to be the carefree girl who gets all the boys’ attention. Now she wants to draw the attention of one guy and get herself a steady boyfriend. But before she can make that happen, a game of truth or dare that was supposed to be stacked in her favor goes terribly wrong and Chelly finds herself at the center of a dare that will make sure she never gets a guy. Still, she’s determined and will do whatever it takes to get herself a guy of her own. But who? And at what cost? And most importantly, is she ready to drop the act? Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the mid- to late 1940s, a group of young men rattled the psychiatric establishment by beaming a public spotlight on the squalid conditions and brutality in our nation’s mental hospitals and training schools for people with psychiatric and intellectual disabilities. Bringing the abuses to the attention of newspapers and magazines across the country, they led a reform effort to change public attitudes and to improve the training and status of institutional staff. Prominent Americans, such as Eleanor Roosevelt, ACLU founder Roger Baldwin, author Pearl S. Buck, actress Helen Hayes, and African-American activist Mary McLeod Bethune, supported the efforts of the young men. These young men were among the 12,000 World War II conscientious objectors who chose to perform civilian public service as an alternative to fighting in what is widely regarded as America’s “good war.” Three thousand of these men volunteered to work at state institutions where they discovered appalling conditions. Acting on conscience a second time, they challenged America’s treatment of its citizens with severe disabilities. Acts of Conscience brings to light the extra-ordinary efforts of these courageous men, drawing upon extensive archival research, interviews, and personal correspondence. The World War II conscientious objectors were not the first to expose public institutions, and they would not be the last. What distinguishes them from reformers of other eras is that their activities have faded from the professional and popular memory. Taylor’s moving account is an indispensable contribution to the historical record.

Book excerpt: Four brothers gather at their family's mountain farm to build a coffin for their dying father, Randall Stargill. Once he passes, they face the dilemma of whether to keep or sell the land that has been in their faimily since 1790. Land is more than a place to the people of the southern mountains--land is who they are. For Nora Bonesteel, Appalachian wise woman and a former sweetheart to the father whose death poses a different problem: the small box that she must bury with him. When the Stargills open the box and find the bones of a child, Sheriff Spencer Arrowood becomes involved. And when Nora then refuses to reveal where she got the bones or to who they belonged, the mountain descends into disarray, and a long history of secrets and tensions begins to unravel. In a style both lyrical and gorgeously detailed, with a narrative that flows from Native American lore and the frontier tales of Daniel Boone up to the sharpest and keenly realized landscapes of Appalachia today, The Rosewood Casket is a hauntingly beautiful elegy on the loss of the land, a tragedy repeated many times in the history of Appalachia--Back cover.

Book excerpt: Leading scholars, activists, and political leaders on being victim's of the world's worst atrocities "How much compensation ought to be paid to a woman who was raped 7,500 times? What would the members of the Commission want for their daughters if their daughters had been raped even once?"—Karen Parker, speaking before the U.N. Commission on Human Rights Seemingly every week, a new question arises relative to the current worldwide ferment over human injustices. Why does the U.S. offer $20,000 atonement money to Japanese Americans relocated to concentration camps during World War II, while not even apologizing to African Americans for 250 years of human bondage and another century of institutionalized discrimination? How can the U.S. and Canada best grapple with the genocidal campaigns against Native Americans on which their countries were founded? How should Japan make amends to Korean "comfort women" sexually enslaved during World War II? Why does South Africa deem it necessary to grant amnesty to whites who tortured and murdered blacks under apartheid? Is Germany's highly praised redress program, which has paid billions of dollars to Jews worldwide, a success, and, as such, an example for others?More generally, is compensation for a historical wrong dangerous "blood money" that allows a nation to wash its hands forever of its responsibility to those it has injured? A rich collection of essays from leading scholars, pundits, activists, and political leaders the world over, many written expressly for this volume, When Sorry Isn't Enough also includes the voices of the victims of some of the world's worst atrocities, thereby providing a panoramic perspective on an international controversy often marked more by heat than reason.
