Book Advances in Generative Lexicon Theory

Download or read book Advances in Generative Lexicon Theory written by James Pustejovsky and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-18 with total page 492 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collection of papers takes linguists to the leading edge of techniques in generative lexicon theory, the linguistic composition methodology that arose from the imperative to provide a compositional semantics for the contextual modifications in meaning that emerge in real linguistic usage. Today’s growing shift towards distributed compositional analyses evinces the applicability of GL theory, and the contributions to this volume, presented at three international workshops (GL-2003, GL-2005 and GL-2007) address the relationship between compositionality in language and the mechanisms of selection in grammar that are necessary to maintain this property. The core unresolved issues in compositionality, relating to the interpretation of context and the mechanisms of selection, are treated from varying perspectives within GL theory, including its basic theoretical mechanisms and its analytical viewpoint on linguistic phenomena.

Book Innovative Solutions for Creating Sustainable Cities

Download or read book Innovative Solutions for Creating Sustainable Cities written by Sylvie Albert and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2019-08-30 with total page 427 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How do we prepare for and manage the challenges and the transformations that are increasingly confronting cities? Solutions are necessary for the impacts expected from the global population movement toward urban centres; the evolution of technologies and its influence on the economy; the evolving socio-cultural fabric of our cities and what it means for citizen engagement and happiness; and for the increasing need to protect and better manage the environment. The series of essays presented here will help governments, organizations, and concerned citizens think differently about ways we can improve the places we call home. It will stimulate local stakeholders to move away from silo-thinking and work collaboratively toward innovative solutions to make cities more liveable and sustainable. The volume brings together international experts on development, innovation, education, health, digitalization, and planning to provide stimulating new ideas and successful examples of tools and systems being used worldwide to improve the future of cities.

Book Advances in Natural Language Processing

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book constitutes the refereed proceedings of the Third International Conference PorTAL 2002 - Portugal for Natural Language Processing, held in Faro, Portugal, in June 2002. The 23 reviewed regular papers and 11 short papers presented were carefully reviewed and selected from 48 submissions. The papers are organized in topical sections on pragmatics, discourse, semantics, and the lexicon; interpreting and generating spoken and written language; language-oriented information retrieval, question answering, summarization, and information extraction; language-oriented machine learning; multi-lingual processing, machine translation, and translation aids; natural language interfaces and dialogue systems; tools and resources; and evaluation of systems.

Book Lindenmayer Systems Fractals and Plants

Download or read book Lindenmayer Systems Fractals and Plants written by Przemyslaw Prusinkiewicz and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-11-11 with total page 127 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 1-systems are a mathematical formalism which was proposed by Aristid 1indenmayer in 1968 as a foundation for an axiomatic theory of develop ment. The notion promptly attracted the attention of computer scientists, who investigated 1-systems from the viewpoint of formal language theory. This theoretical line of research was pursued very actively in the seventies, resulting in over one thousand publications. A different research direction was taken in 1984 by Alvy Ray Smith, who proposed 1-systems as a tool for synthesizing realistic images of plants and pointed out the relationship between 1-systems and the concept of fractals introduced by Benoit Mandel brot. The work by Smith inspired our studies of the application of 1-systems to computer graphics. Originally, we were interested in two problems: • Can 1-systems be used as a realistic model of plant species found in nature? • Can 1-systems be applied to generate images of a wide class of fractals? It turned out that both questions had affirmative answers. Subsequently we found that 1-systems could be applied to other areas, such as the generation of tilings, reproduction of a geometric art form from East India, and synthesis of musical scores based on an interpretation of fractals. This book collects our results related to the graphical applications of- systems. It is a corrected version of the notes which we prepared for the ACM SIGGRAPH '88 course on fractals.

Book The Algorithmic Beauty of Plants

Download or read book The Algorithmic Beauty of Plants written by Przemyslaw Prusinkiewicz and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 235 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Now available in an affordable softcover edition, this classic in Springer's acclaimed Virtual Laboratory series is the first comprehensive account of the computer simulation of plant development. 150 illustrations, one third of them in colour, vividly demonstrate the spectacular results of the algorithms used to model plant shapes and developmental processes. The latest in computer-generated images allow us to look at plants growing, self-replicating, responding to external factors and even mutating, without becoming entangled in the underlying mathematical formulae involved. The authors place particular emphasis on Lindenmayer systems - a notion conceived by one of the authors, Aristid Lindenmayer, and internationally recognised for its exceptional elegance in modelling biological phenomena. Nonetheless, the two authors take great care to present a survey of alternative methods for plant modelling.

Download or read book Fractals written by G. Cherbit and published by . This book was released on 1991-01-31 with total page 280 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This text will be a valuable tool and reference work for all those interested in fractal forms and their properties. The past decade has seen an almost exponential amount of work done in the field of non-integral dimensions. Upon publication of Mandelbrot's Objets Fractals (1975), a great number of researchers understood the interest of fractals. Many tried, by means of the theory, to set up immediately useable tools, including the author, who opted for an experimental approach and developed instrumentation to explore the widest possible range in both time and space (time resolution of the laser spectroscopy of biomolecules). In this spirit, these expert researchers organized monthly ``Hausdorff seminars on the notion of non-integral dimension and its applications'' to tackle the problems confronting practical scientists. This work captures, with many illustrative examples, the main themes of each session.
