La publicación en dos volúmenes se justifica por la calidad científica de las aportaciones y por la variedad de las disciplinas históricas y filológicas que abarcan. El tomo I da cabida a ponencias y conferencias y a dos secciones, Fonética, Fonología y Grafemática históricas y Morfología y Sintaxis históricas. En el tomo II se reúnen los capítulos referidos a Semántica, Lexicografía y Lexicología históricas, Dialectología y Sociolingüística históricas, Historia de los lenguajes específicos, Toponimia y Onomástica, Teoría y Crítica textuales e Historia externa de la lengua española. Incluye dos secciones específicas dedicadas al español de América y al lenguaje del Derecho, la Economía, la prensa y de la política, con especial atención a los siglos XVIII y XIX, ámbito temporal en que se engendró la Constitución de 1812.
