Download or read book A new method of seawater desalination via acrylic acid based hydrogels Synthesis characterisation and experimental realisation written by Höpfner, Johannes and published by KIT Scientific Publishing. This book was released on 2014-02-04 with total page 318 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The scarcity of potable water is a great challenge. It may be resolved by the desalination of seawater. In this work, the possibilities of a new desalination technique using polymeric hydrogels as a separation medium for water and salt is explored. The bound charges in such a polymeric network prevent salt from entering it - under pressure the desalinated water is released from the gel. It is demonstrated that the method is viable and the influence of various process parameters investigated.

Download or read book Health Effect Assessments of the Basic Acrylates written by Elizabeth K. Hunt and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 1993-08-19 with total page 156 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Health Effect Assessments of the Basic Acrylates is the first book to provide a comprehensive discussion of the toxicological and ecotoxicological effects of the five major high-production volume acrylates: acrylic acid and the methyl, ethyl, butyl, and 2-ethylhexyl esters. Insightful interpretations of the effects of these acrylates on human populations and the environment are presented, and the severity of observed toxic responses is documented. The nature of the responses is discussed in relation to the metabolism and biological reactivity of the acid and each of the esters. Current areas of investigative toxicology as they apply to these chemicals are critically reviewed. The book also presents discussions on other significant aspects of the subject, including the mechanisms of forestomach tumor formation and the role of irritation in toxic responses. This volume stands alone as a complete review of these monomers and will be the standard reference for toxicologists, industrial hygienists, chemical engineers, chemists, and other researchers who need a foundation for research, testing, and development of sound risk assessments for these chemicals.

Download or read book Ion Containing Polymers written by A. Eisenberg and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2012-12-02 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ion-Containing Polymers: Physical Properties and Structure is Volume 2 of the series Polymer Physics. This book aims to fill in the gap in literature regarding the physical aspects of ion-containing polymers. A total of five chapters comprise this book. The Introduction (Chapter 1) generally deals with the application of ion-containing polymers, general classification, and the available works regarding the subject. Chapter 2 establishes the concepts of supermolecular structure and glass transitions in terms of the effects of ionic forces in polymers. These chapters provide the context in the discussion of viscoelastic properties of homopolymers and copolymers in Chapters 3 and 4. Finally, Chapter 5 tackles the configuration-dependent properties of ion-containing polymers. This volume will be of particular help to students in the field of physics and chemistry.
Download or read book Catalysis in Petrochemical Processes written by M.S. Matar and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 1988-12-31 with total page 222 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The field of petrochemicals started some years ago with the simple addition reaction of water to propylene for the production of isopropyl alcohol. Currently, the petrochemical industry has become a multi-billion dollar enterprise which encompasses a wide field of chemical products. Almost all the basic organic reactions such as hydrogenation, alkylation, substitution, polymerization, etc. are utilized for the production of these chemicals. It may not, however, have been possible to establish this huge industry without the use of different catalysts. In other words, the great advancements in the catalytic area have supported the vast developments in the petrochemical field. In this book, we have adopted the idea of discussing the petrochemical industry from the point of view of reactants' activities and susceptibilities toward different catalysts. The book is thus classified according to the reaction type. This will eriable students and other users of the book to base their understanding of the petrochemical field on the fundamental principles learned in chemistry. How ever, the first chapter is aimed at establishing some basic facts on the petro chemical industry and its major uses. It discusses, without going into details, the raw materials used, the intermediates and the downstream products. The next eight chapters discuss in some detail the main reactions and the catalysts used for the production of chemicals and polymers from petroleum. The last chapter is devoted to a discussion of some of the practical techniques used in the catalytic field.
