She walked quickly down the sordid street Of the industrial town, with a sense of release. She went into a store to leave the key for the agent of the house. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Dweller on the Threshold The sadness noted by Malling was at first evasive and fleeting, not indelibly fixed in the puckers of a forehead, or in the down-drawn corners of a mouth. It was as a thin, almost impalpable mist, that can scarcely be seen, yet that alters all the features in a landscape ever so faintly. Like a shadow it travelled across the eyes, obscured the forehead, lay about the lips. And as a shadow lifts it lifted. But it soon returned, like a thing uneasy that is becoming determined to discover an abiding place. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Home Life: Or a Peep Across the Threshold Why we wrote it, is more dificnlt to tell. Many things urged us on. To gratify the perhaps too partial love of one no more on earth first prompted us to try if we could write a story, picture upon paper some of the incidents we had gathered up in our brief pilgrimage. Afterwards we wrote, partly because we learned to love the habit, and partly from an earnest h0pe that thus we might give back to the literary world a little of the pleas ure and the profit it had and was still giving us, and furnish to those who will not read a moral unless it is draped in pleasant fiction, a few of the many that centre on the hearthstone, and thence diverge through every scene of life to brighten and to bless. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Threshold: A Novel He turned from this unsightliness into the broad square which had been named for his family. In the center of it the Courthouse stood with a majestic display of Gothic columns which had cost the tax payers of Cresston dear. The long, grassy slope of the lawn, shaded by ancient trees that were never trimmed, was a favorite lobby for the men who talked over the affairs of the nation in the open, and for loungers who fed on stray bits of gossip, and for small boys who did errands for a penny. But at this hour the lawn was empty and the shade of the great trees had turned it into dim aisles of coolness and beauty. Stray bits of paper moving in the breeze that came from the hot west were lifted lazily, like white butterflies hovering in the deep shadow. Book A Book of Cambridge Verse Classic Reprint

Download or read book A Book of Cambridge Verse Classic Reprint written by Ernest Edward Kellett and published by CUP Archive. This book was released on 2016-11-23 with total page 532 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Book of Cambridge Verse Nevertheless, after all deductions have been made, how much true poetry is yet left! He must be hard to please who cannot find intense enjoyment in the Eclogues of Phineas Fletcher, in Cowley's epitaph on Harvey, in the Miltonic stanzas of Gray's Installation Ode, in a score of other pieces, grave, quaint, or classical in their allusive ness of phrasing. Especially grateful must we be to the number of poets, of exquisite feeling and easy mastery of form, who during the last fifty or sixty years have enriched the language with delicate and elegant verse, from which it has been only too difficult to choose because its quantity is so great and its merit so even. Of this we trust we have given a tolerably adequate selection but it would have been easy to multiply it fourfold. Book Observations Upon the Natural History of Epidemic Diarrhoea

Download or read book Observations Upon the Natural History of Epidemic Diarrhoea written by O. H. Peters and published by CUP Archive. This book was released on 2018-02-06 with total page 206 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Observations Upon the Natural History of Epidemic Diarrhoea The causative agencies from which springs the plentiful harvest of child mortality in large cities may be conceived as a felted mass of rootlets almost inextricably intertwined. Those of poverty, bad housing, bad feeding, and neglect, may be severally recognized, but the extent of their interrelations with actual respiratory and alimentary disease - those to which the greater part of the mortality is referred - can be traced only with difficulty. It is the object Of this work to aid ln the labour of cutting away the matrix and entangling fibres and to lay bare the hidden ramifications of at least one important causative agency - epidemic diarrhoea. This affection - if we accept provisionally the more novel and generally favoured conception. As to its nature - is revealed as something very like an ordinary infectious disease, and one which permeates all classes, while the excessive mortality it gathers round itself in urban centres must be regarded as something superadded, owing to the vicious circle it forms with those baneful conditions of slum life mentioned above. On the other hand, its peculiarly intimate association with the circum stances of domestic life, from the continual faecal pollution of the interior of the household by infants and others, tends to make it more so than other affections of the kind peculiarly a class disease, and an especial scourge of dirty neighbourhoods. Dirty towns may however be saved from excessive mortality by a high percentage of breast feeding. A notable point in the interesting comparison that can be drawn between diarrhoea and typhoid fever is that, in accordance with their peculiarly opposite age-incidence curves, the marked and habitual depositing of infectious excreta within the household in the former disease may make the question of water-closet versus conservancy pan a matter of far less importance than in the latter. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Stumble on the Threshold, Vol. 2 of 2 Perhaps it is not to the advantage of the successful candidate for University honours that at an age when the majority of young men are seeking for employment and the means of livelihood, he is placed above such anxieties for ever. It seems somewhat ridiculous that by the gaining a college Fellowship, all neces sity for work on the very threshold of adult life is done away with; and no doubt it has encouraged that lethargic indolence which, under the fine name of lettered ease, is so. Download or read book To Persevere in Love written by Leander S. Harding and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2013-05-20 with total page 219 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The very word "priest" is a word of controversy and contention in the Church. In this collection of essays, sermons, and meditations, an ordained priest in the Anglican tradition defends the use of the term and argues that the renewal of the priesthood of the people requires an appropriate appreciation of the power and dignity of holy orders. This book, which comes out of thirty years of pastoral ministry, is an encouragement to the ordained to persevere in love and thus fulfill the calling to keep alive at the heart of the church the sacrificial love of Jesus Christ, the great high priest.
