Book excerpt: Kerry McCauley has the job most pilots only dream of; delivering small used aircraft to locations around the world. In his 30 years an international ferry pilot, Kerry has delivered almost every kind of airplane you can name to almost every location you can think of. In his long career Kerry battled fuel system malfunctions over the Atlantic, a total electrical failure at night over the Sahara, getting lost over Africa and being struck by lightning off the coast of Portugal. Kerry's almost insatiable, reckless quest for danger and adventure also led to putting international smuggler and bank robber on his resume. Kerry found the answer to the question "what could possibly go wrong?" time and time again. But his skill, ingenuity and luck were what allowed him to survive the countless mishaps, catastrophes and close calls including a nearly fatal plane crash. While "Ferry Pilot" is an account of one man's crazy thirst for thrills and adventure, his coming to grips with the dangerous nature of his career and just how much he wants to test the depth of his luck bag. It's also a portrait of the perseverance and bravery of a devoted family man who lost many close friends and his first wife to the dangerous skies.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. An appendix lists over 80 paddle steamers from the Caledonia of 1814 to the last of the line the Lincoln Castle identified as working on the Humber Estuary from published and archive sources. Book excerpt: The story of three friends journeying across 2,500 miles of the toughest terrain on the planet in a very old Land Rover called 9Bob. Over two months in 2013, they completed the only north-south crossing of the Congo River Basin in decades, travelling from Kinshasa, in the Democratic Republic of Congo, to Juba, in South Sudan, a journey they had been told repeatedly was 'impossible'. On the way, they faced fierce challenges, ranging from jungle terrain, kleptocracy, fire ants, illegal mining and burrowing parasites, to factional disputes, destroyed bridges, non-existent roads and intense suspicion from local people. These difficulties, and others, found them building rafts and bridges to cross rivers, playing tribal politics, bargaining for Land Rover parts in scrapyards, and conducting makeshift surgery in the jungle--both on 9Bob and on one another. Conjuring all their combined ingenuity and resolve, they got through. But the Congo is raw, and the journey took its toll, exerting a psychological pressure on them that they hadn't expected. And although they all lost something in the Congo, this book is ultimately about the power of teamwork to overcome tremendous odds.

Book Guidelines for Ferry Transportation Services

Download or read book Guidelines for Ferry Transportation Services written by Anthony Bruzzone and published by Transportation Research Board. This book was released on 2012 with total page 160 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this research is to investigate the state of ferry transit operations in North America and to develop practitioner guidance for the planning, marketing, operation, and management of ferry transportation systems. The research is intended to present a uniform understanding of the status of ferries as well as options for how to approach planning and operational activities. This guidebook is intended for use by operators large and small, in publicly or privately owned operations, for the development of ferry operations as a solution to a transportation need. This research was developed through literature searches of previous studies, reviews of existing government and state documents, telephone interviews with a broad selection of ferry operators, in depth case studies of eight ferry operators and ferry systems geographically dispersed across the North American continent, and peer review of the interim documents. The main body of this report contains the case studies and a guidebook. Two appendices provide additional information to support the work documented within the main body of the report. Appendix A provides a listing of literature review sources, and Appendix B documents the results of a survey of ferry operators that was developed and implemented in this research.
