Book ACP EU Energy Facility Support for Renewable Energy in East Africa

Download or read book ACP EU Energy Facility Support for Renewable Energy in East Africa written by and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 56 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "In 2004, nearly two billion people did not have access to adequate, affordable and sustainable energy services, which are key in order to make firm progress towards development objectives. Created in June 2005, the ACP–EU Energy Facility aims to promote access to modern energy services for the poor in rural and peri-urban areas, with a strong focus on sub-Saharan Africa and renewable energy. In this report, we conclude that the Commission was mostly successful but could have done better in using the ACP–EU Energy Facility to increase access to renewable energy for the poor in East Africa. We make a number of recommendations for selecting projects more rigorously, strengthening their monitoring and increasing their sustainability prospects." -- Back cover.

Book Energy in Africa

Download or read book Energy in Africa written by Manfred Hafner and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-08-06 with total page 112 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This open access book presents a picture of the current energy challenges on the African continent (and the Sub-Saharan region in particular) and proposes pathways to an accelerated energy transition. Starting with an analysis of the status quo and the outlook for Africa’s energy demand and energy access, it provides an account of the available resources, including hydrocarbons and renewable energy resources, which are playing an increasingly crucial role. It then moves on to analyze the level of investment required to scale-up Africa’s energy systems, shedding light on the key barriers and elaborating on potential solutions. It also provides a suggestion for improving the effectiveness of EU–Africa cooperation. While mainly intended for policymakers and academics, this book also speaks to a broader audience interested in gaining an overview of the challenges and opportunities of the African energy sector today and in the future.

Book Africa and the European Union

Download or read book Africa and the European Union written by J. Mangala and published by Springer. This book was released on 2012-12-28 with total page 257 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The adoption of the Joint Africa-EU Strategy (JAES) in 2007 was a watershed moment in Africa-EU relations, one that sought to 'reinvent' a historical relationship to meet the challenges posed by complex interdependencies, expanding globalization, and growing competition, all framed by the gradual dislocation of the West as the epicenter of world politics. Five years into its implementation, this book offers a thorough and first comprehensive investigation of the JAES, the most advanced form of interregionalism seen to date.

Book Energy Poverty and Access Challenges in Sub Saharan Africa

Download or read book Energy Poverty and Access Challenges in Sub Saharan Africa written by Victoria R. Nalule and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-08-27 with total page 217 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Access to modern energy is central in addressing the major global challenges of the 21st century, including poverty, climate change and famine. However large parts of the world, especially in Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) have poor or no access to modern energy. Victoria Nalule argues that SSA countries have many common energy challenges which could be tackled with collective efforts through regional cooperation. By means of a legal and comparative analysis and a seven-step framework, the book explores the current regional mechanisms employed in Africa to address the challenge of energy poverty and access and whether they are effective in tackling the challenge of energy access, including regional energy infrastructure and regional energy regulations. Chapters discuss the evolution of regionalism in SSA and the role of regional cooperation in the development of renewable energy as a means of confronting both energy access and climate change. Specifically the nexus between energy access, renewable energy and climate change is covered as well as the potential of fossil fuels in addressing energy poverty. The establishment and development of regional energy infrastructure as one of the mechanisms of addressing energy access challenges in SSA and regional efforts to harmonise energy regulation are explored. Finally a concluding chapter provides recommendations for policy makers and other relevant stakeholders on how best to implement some of the suggestions made in previous chapters. International organisations, regional organisations, government officials, scholars and students with interest in the energy sector will highly benefit from this book.

Book Governance in Global Policy Networks

Download or read book Governance in Global Policy Networks written by Sebastian Wienges and published by Peter Lang. This book was released on 2010 with total page 358 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Energy spurs social and economic development and has multiple effects on the ecological and social environment of societies. Energy access for socially equitable development, energy security for economic growth, and the mitigation of climate change all represent issues of sustainable development. Energy markets, however, fail to set incentives right. Based on research in five sustainable energy-related global policy networks and on conducted expert interviews, this study analyzes the effectiveness of global policy networks and aims to identify instruments of effective global environmental governance. In conclusion, the study will draft a strategy for network governance how to reconcile long-term and short-term interests by creating integrative sustainable business opportunities. This strategy has to foster collaboration in partnerships and self-organizing dynamics among the network partners.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over the past decade the European Union (EU) has gradually developed the European Neighbourhood Policy (ENP) with its neighbours. This book addresses the EU’s broader neighbourhood, comprising of the ENP countries and the neighbours of its neighbours. With specific focus on Saharan Africa, the Middle East and Central Asia, it discusses trans-regional policy issues that arise from the EU’s relations with regions beyond the ENP. Book Environmental Integration in the EU s External Relations

Download or read book Environmental Integration in the EU s External Relations written by Gracia Marín Durán and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2012-03-16 with total page 291 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book examines the integration of environmental protection requirements into EU external relations focusing on unilateral, bilateral and inter-regional instruments, which have been less explored than the multilateral dimension of EU environmental policy. The book also explores for the first time the complex interplay and mutual influences between EU environmental integration initiatives and environmental multilateralism. On the one hand it identifies the legal and other instruments used by the EU to support the implementation of multilateral environmental agreements in third countries (particularly developing ones). On the other hand, it singles out the legal and other tools employed by the EU as a means to build partnerships with third countries in order to influence ongoing multilateral negotiations concerning the environment and sustainable development, or to contribute to the development of new international environmental norms in the absence of such multilateral negotiations. Ultimately, the book traces the significant evolution of the various tools deployed by the EU to integrate environmental concerns in its external relations, with a view to identifying emerging challenges and future directions.
